The Method for Ghusl

First wash both hands including the wrists three times, then wash away any impurities from the body three times, then do both types of istanja, whether it is needed or not at the time. After that perform wudhu in accordance with the Sunnah. If the bath water begins to gather by your feet, then move to another place to wash your feet although it is still permissible to wash them at that time.

Then pour water over the head, then over the right shoulder and then the left shoulder. Pour enough water that it would fall to the ground from the height of one’s head. Then repeat these steps one more time and wherever one feels that water has not reached, one should wipe his hands over that area to make sure that water reaches that point. Then repeat these steps a third time. (Tirmidhi)

There is evidence for both drying one’s body after ghusl with a piece of cloth and for not drying. Hence both methods are considered to be from the Sunnah. (Mishkaat)

Hadhrat Aisha Siddeeqah radhiallah anha and Hadhrat Maymuna radhiallah anha relate that first the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would wash his hands three times. Then he would make istanja with the left hand and then pour water over that area with the right hand. He would use lumps of earth to rub and clean that area. He would wash all the nooks and crannies of the body during ghusl, and it was also his blessed habit to do khilal of the blessed beard and wash it so that water would reach the roots of all its hair.

He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would wash the hair on his blessed head and made sure that water reached the roots of the hair. Then he would wash the rest of the body, and step aside from the ghusl area to wash the feet again.

It has been narrated by Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah radhiallah anhu that Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “The effect of janabah (ritual impurity) remains under each hair of the body. Hence one should wash all body hair thoroughly when doing ghusl after janabah and ensure every hair becomes wet with water. It is important to clean in this manner. (Sunan Abi Dawud)

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah radhiallah anhu narrates that the Blessed Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “It is incumbent upon every Muslim to have ghusl at least once in seven days and in particular on the day of Jumu’ah.” And during ghusl one should wash the body and hair properly. (Bukhari)

Hadhrat Samurah bin Jundub radhiallah anhu relates that Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “To perform ghusl on a Friday is superior.” (Ahmad, Abu Dawud & Tirmidhi)
