What is the Sunnah of Invitation?

Allah ta'ala has granted us the Prophet ﷺ's Sunnah which is the greatest favour and reward upon mankind. Without the Sunnah we cannot live our lives. His ﷺ Sunnah differentiates our lifestyle with the way of the animals. All Sunnah ways grant us guidance whether it is related to upbringing, farming, social conduct, buying and selling, maintaining relationships or character. There is no part of life in which we are devoid of acquiring the Sunnah learnings.

In every generation, the Sunnah will serve as our protection. If we hold firm upon the Sunnah, we will be safe even during Dajjaal's arrival.

No part of a human's life should be devoid of the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ's lifestyle should be adopted and embraced extensively. When a person rejects and discards the Sunnah, trials and corruption spread across the earth.

Inviting others to a Waleema, party, or a gathering, is a big part of society. If we do not take the guidance of the Sunnah regarding inviting others and accepting invitations, then it could become a source of displeasure, enmity and fighting.

For example, if the host has invited one person to attend a function and this individual brings others with him, (an act which opposes the Sunnah), it may become a source of burden for the host who is most likely unprepared and unequipped for extra guests. Instead of love, a person may develop dislike for such a person. Thus, if we take the guidance of the Sunnah, we avoid facing such issues in our society.

It is mentioned in Hadith that An Ansari man, called Abu Shuaib, came and told his butcher slave, "Prepare meals sufficient for five persons, for I want to invite the Prophet ﷺ along with four other persons as I saw signs of hunger on his face." Abu Shuaib invited them and another person came along with them. The Prophet ﷺ said (to Abu Shuaib), This man followed us, so if you allow him, he will join us, and if you want him to return, he will go back." Abu Shuaib said, "No, I have allowed him." [Bukhari Shareef]

This is an act which we do not witness amongst us today. If we utilised this method in offering and accepting invitations, we would receive great blessings and we would not face any problems.

Nowadays, if we are not invited to attend a function, we consider the host as rude and then we become enemies with them. We consider it disrespectful, we plan revenge and we rebuke them. In reality, we should not attend such functions without being invited.

Nabi ﷺ has mentioned , "The one who comes upon food which he has not been invited to partake in has entered as a thief and left as a bandit." (Abu Dawud Shareef)

We will be punished for opposing the Sunnah.

The Sunnah way of inviting is to specify how many people you are inviting alongside the guest. It is against the Sunnah to attend a function without an invitation. Those who do this are unwise and have no value for the Sunnah. They do not consider the Sunnah to be a part of Deen.

Deen refers to leading our lives according to the way of the Sunnah. If we leave this path which guides and purifies us, how will we enter Paradise?

One can never receive loss in adopting the method of the Sunnah. If we follow the way of the Sunnah, we will receive blessings, spiritual enhancement, full security and we will attain a high status. For example, if our business transactions were according to the Sunnah, we would never face loss or pain due to them.

It is Sunnah to construct straight rows in congregation and avoid having gaps in between. If there are gaps remaining, Shayateen and Jinn come in between and play with those individuals who are praying. This is because when we discard the Sunnah, Allah ta'ala brings punishment upon us.

Today, we are being punished for using the Masaajid in the wrong way such as utilising it for the benefit of our lives and for other functions and tasks. We shun the Sunnah etiquettes of observing prayer.

If we distance from each other during prayer, it will create hatred and differences between our hearts. The purpose of the Masjid is to submit together and create love between each other. The more you join shoulder to shoulder, the more love is developed between you. The fact that we are now social distancing means that we are being punished by Allah ta'ala for taking the Sunnah lightly.

Allah ta'ala has taken His blessings away from us, however, we do not consider it a loss. We are not even upset that Hajj has been taken from us. The only loss we have felt is not being able to meet other people.

We have been prevented from attending the Masaajid and our meetings have ended. The place where we would gather and the place our hearts would meet, has been taken from us due to our ungratefulness. We rejected the Masjaaid, engaged in unlawful activities within the Masjid and didn't utilise it properly for the sake of our own desires. This is why we are being punished by Allah ta'ala today. We need to repent for discarding the Sunnah as it is the greatest favour upon us by Allah ta'ala.

Our biggest responsibility in life after reciting the Kalimah, is to learn and adopt every Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and teach it to our children. This is Deen and through upholding it, our society would be made beautiful.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
