Every person complains about his issues and the problems he faces in life. Even the rich person with a high status faces the same condition. No one is saved from difficulties and problems. Both those who have children and those who do not, face problems. Both poor and wealthy people face problems. In reality, every person has fallen prey to issues and difficulties.
There is no benefit of wealth and status when a person is distressed and these conditions do not befit a believer. The root cause of distress is our own habits. Due to our habit of being ungrateful, we earn distress.
An ungrateful person can have much wealth, yet he remains distressed and dissatisfied. Equally, a poor person remains distressed when he is ungrateful. In reality, he should not be stressed as the noble companions lived a life of poverty, yet displayed happiness. In reality, we should be happy whether we are rich or poor.
On the other hand, a grateful person is never upset despite which circumstances he faces. There is no medical cure for stress. The only cure is to lead a life of gratitude and appreciation.
The poor person becomes wealthy once he displays gratitude and the wealthy person becomes content with what he has when he displays gratitude. If we are grateful, we are successful.
وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
"...and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to patience." [103:3]
Imam Shafi'ee رحمة الله عليه says, "Even if Surah Asr was the only Surah to be revealed in the Quran, it suffices for a person's guidance."
Our pious predecessors would recite this Surah to each other before departing from one another. It is a very valuable Surah due to its subjects of gratefulness and patience.
Today, we are distressed as we not grateful and we are impatient. We do not have the ability to persevere and display steadfastness. A person who lacks this ability, remains in a state of anger and quarrel.
If we had patience, the husband and wife would live in peace and harmony with each other. For the sake of Allah ta'ala's name, a wife gives her life to her husband, such that she doesn't see her family members. She remains attached to her husband. They have ups and downs in their marriage and if they don't have compatibility, then Shariah gives permission for them to separate their ways. The best solution is that the man should think that he has brought a woman home. She has left her family for the sake of Allah ta'ala. Allah ta'ala's name is in between the husband and the wife which is a great trust.
She lives her whole life with a foolish man who doesn't understand. He doesn't fulfil her rights. On the day of Qiyaamah, these men will be severely questioned.
There can never be issues in the home in which there is patience exercised by both the husband and wife. If she is angry he should be calm and vice versa. Quarrels, disorder and divorce occur when there is no patience and gratitude in the home. This is the root cause of distress.
How should we adopt these qualities within us?
When we follow the Sunnah, we earn all the solutions and our issues are solved. Through adopting the Sunnah, we gain patience and thankfulness. When we shun the way of Nabi ﷺ, we receive nothing.
Therefore, the solution to every restriction and difficulty lies in his Sunnah and emulating his lifestyle. Those homes which are absent of the Shariah and the Sunnah of Nabi ﷺ, are hollow ditches.
To bring one Sunnah in to our life is not a massive challenge and one beloved habit of the Prophet ﷺ will transform our whole life.
Hadhrat Abu Dhar Ghaffari رضي الله عنه narrates, "My friend (Nabi ﷺ ) instructed me to look to those who are less fortunate than me and not to those who are above me." [Musnad Ahmad Shareef]
If you adopt this habit, patience and gratitude will enter your life. Thus, all your problems will be solved and you will endure the greatest tests.
You will be the most patient and thankful person in the eyes of your Lord.
In Surah Asr, Allah ta'ala swears by the generations and every generation finds a cure from this Surah. We can solve our problems and restrictions via this Surah if we learn gratitude and patience.
When a person witnesses someone who has less wealth than him, naturally it is easier for him to thank Allah ta'ala for the blessings He has granted him.
The person who looks towards those who are superior to him, can never be grateful. He loses his peace in doing so and his mood becomes down. He has negative emotions and his bad mood is reflected upon his wife. Shaytan attacks him and he begins arguing with his wife.
This is why the Prophet ﷺ instructed us to look to those below us. What a difference in attitude just by practicing this one Sunnah!
By doing so, we will not feel pain or agony. We will not lose patience and endurance and we would become grateful servants of our Lord.
Even if we have a sickness, we should look to those who are worse off than us. One becomes more upset and stressed when he observes the healthy and those who are enjoying themselves. Instead, we should be grateful that we can at least, eat, sit up and speak and know that there are others who are deprived of these blessings. In this way, we will become grateful.
May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
