The Qur’an has completely told us the reason for hypocrisy. This is a disease of the heart. And in the same way, the root of all other internal diseases is the heart. Physical sicknesses and diseases emanate from the stomach – the stomach is the root cause of many sicknesses. In the same way, the heart is the root of the spiritual diseases. So if a person’s heart is in control and is protected, kept safe and secure, then consider that that person is safe from all sicknesses. His Islam and Iman is protected, and he departs this world nicely. But if a person doesn’t protect and control the heart, then that person will find very severe sicknesses in the heart, like Shirk and Nifaq and the other sicknesses and deficiencies that we find in people. So the Qur’an is making us understand this, and is telling us that we need to save ourselves from these sicknesses. If we protect out hearts, we can be saved.
Now, the situation that we are realizing is we need to be saved from Nifaq, hypocrisy, which is a very bad sickness, and close to Qiyamah, as the days get closer to the Day of Judgement, the Munafiqeen, the hypocrites, will increase in number. Imam Mehdi alayhi salam will come at that time when the conditions around us in the world are such that the population of Munafiqs will be large. People who call themselves Muslim, who say that they are believers, are actually not Muslims, the Qur’an says. They are different, separate, in their feeling, their emotion, and their belief. The biggest sign of Nifaq has been mentioned in the Qur’an, which we should remember often; we should memorize this. If we want to depart this world safely and nicely, then the biggest sign of the hypocrite should be ingrained in our minds and thoughts, so that we can ward it off. The Munafiq will be ahead of everybody in praying; he will be ready for Salah, ready for Umrah, ready for Hajj, ready for physical actions, for conferences, for marches, for shouting slogans, but whenever the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam’s Shari’ah and Sunnah is spoken about, then immediately the direction will change, their focus will change, and they will put forward excuses and reasons. That is why Allah ta’ala says in the Qur’an that they are liars { يَكۡذِبُونَ}. Their excuses are lies, their Salah is a lie, their ‘Ilm is a lie, their Qur’an is a lie, their Hifdh is a lie, their Tafseer is a lie, their Dhikr is a lie, their so-called piety is a lie. Everything they ascribe to themselves, Allah says { يَكۡذِبُونَ}, they are liars.
Yes, alhamdulillah, if they are honest and good, and accept, embrace and implement the Shari’ah and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, then alhamdulillah, that group is distinguished. You get true Sufis and liar Sufis. Who are the liar Sufis? That group who do not care about Shari’ah and Sunnah; they don’t care. You will find true Sheikhs, and false Sheikhs – what is the difference? That the Sheikh who does adhere to the Shari'ah and Sunnah is a liar. And you will find true scholars and liar scholars. Who is the dishonest scholar? The one who doesn’t accept or respect the Shari'ah and Sunnah. You will find false Hufaadh, false ‘Alims, false Qaris, false Sheikhs. So the Qur’an explains how to distinguish between truth and dishonesty, and between falsehood and reality. This is such a big deception that the human being needs to save himself from hypocrisy. And Allah ta’ala has given the methodology for being saved. There is one way, which is to protect one’s heart. Whoever protects his heart, alhamdulillah, whoever has done Islah of the Nafs, rectification of the Nafs, Tarbiyyah, Tazkiyya – all these are names for the protection of the heart - that person becomes successful, saved.
When Imam Mehdi comes, he will come to oppose these people – his dispute will be with these people, and they will be the ones who will be eliminated. Hadhrat Isa alayhi salam will come for these people because they are dangerous, they are hidden, they are the worst. People without faith are visible and apparent, but these people are the worst, as they give pain to Islam. Imam Mehdi will sort these people out first, and will eliminate them first, and will correct their Islam. This is the quarrel, isn’t it! Today people say that they are waiting. They say ‘Oh when is Imam Mehdi going to come? When is he coming?’ The hypocrites remember him the most, and think they will play games with him and trick him, that there will be money and funds, and that with their games, and tricks and funds and wealth, they will overwhelm and influence Imam Mehdi alayhi salam, astaghfirullah. How can this be? The real struggle of Imam Mehdi alayhi salam will be with these people. And he will come at that time when the Munafiqeen will be at their peak, and will have proliferated.
So Allah subhana wa ta’ala has, via the Qur’an, given us a message: correct your hearts! Correct your hearts in order to be saved! Just as, if we protect our stomachs, our bodies will be saved from illnesses, if we correct our hearts, the spiritual sicknesses can be removed, and we can be saved from that.
So the Qur’an gives Nasiha, and alongside that, it has given the cure. When the Qur’an highlights a deficiency or sickness, it gives the cure. This is the style of the Qur’an, that wherever the Hukm comes, it gives the cure, the physical solution for the sickness and the deficiency. What is the first action that a person should do for the protection of the heart? What does the Qur’an say in this regard? Allah’s Nabi alayhi salam was constructing the Ka’abah, and while doing so, he was making Dua to Allah:
{رَبَّنَا وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِيهِمۡ رَسُولاً۬ مِّنۡہُمۡ يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡہِمۡ ءَايَـٰتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيہِمۡ‌ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ}
Hadhrat Ibrahim alayhi salam and Hadhrat Ismail alayhi salam were constructing the Ka’abah, and whilst they were doing this, they requested Allah: ‘Make such a leader from amongst the worshippers who will populate Your home.’ And the two Prophets asked for three things in addition: ‘Oh Allah, also give us a Kitab, a Book, and alongside that, give us the meaning, the commentary of that Book - tell us all the hidden secrets, so that we can understand and teach the reality; and our Maula, alongside the meaning of this Kitab, give us, for our purification, the knowledge of how to clean our hearts in order to bring purity and understanding.’
So three things were requested from Allah. In accordance with this Dua, Allah subhana wa ta’ala sent the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam to the Dunya with these three things, SubhanAllah. One is the Kitab. ‘Oh Allah, raise up from our offspring an Apostle among them who shall convey the message, and bring a Kitab and impart to them revelation and wisdom’ – the wisdom is his Shari'ah and Sunnah – and alongside this { وَيُزَكِّيہِمۡ} ‘and cause them to grow in purity, so that we can attain a sincere and pure heart and Baatin.’ And the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam also brought that knowledge with him. So three things, SubhanAllah. {وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيہِمۡ} ‘Oh Allah, send from amongst them your Apostle, who will come with Your messages: the Kitab; and also wisdom – the Shari'ah and Sunnah; and alongside that, he will continue to clean their hearts, to purify their hearts. So in other words, the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam explained these three functions for which he was sent, and the third one is to purify the hearts.
What do we need to do to purify the hearts? What is needed to purify and clean the hearts? Tazkiyya – purification. Tazkiyya of the heart, of the Qalb. This is called Islah, rectification of the Nafs, improvement of the heart. The first thing that we have been told, which has been explained, is that the best and first cure to initiate this Tazkiyya is
{يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ}
What is the first step to purity? It is company, Sohbat. The first lesson that the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave was with his company. The blessed Companions did not have ‘Ilm, knowledge, no Madrasa, no Kitabs, none of that; the most important thing that purified them, after decades of idol worship, killing children and drinking alcohol, was that they sat in the company of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and then, SubhanAllah, their hearts became shining and radiating; the light from their hearts would spread and reach the heavens, SubhanAllah!
So we learn that there were three things that Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam brought: the Qur’an; the Hikma – his Sunnah; and { وَيُزَكِّيہِمۡ} the purification of the hearts. And the first step in purification is { كُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ } – keep the company of the righteous, pure, and pious people. So here we are getting the lesson that if you want to be saved from Nifaq, which is a major sin that we need to take steps in our lives to protect our hearts from, and the first step, lesson number one in protecting the heart, is the company of the WaliAllah, the company of the righteous, honest person. { كُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ } This is lesson number one of purity.
So purity is one of the three essential functions that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam taught the Ummah, and step one of purity is company of the pious. So we should have passion and intention that we want to rectify ourselves. These verses about Nifaq that we are reading, should make our hearts shake, and yearn for learning. Alhamdulillah, Allah ta’ala has given us the path, so immediately, a person should feel in his heart that he must be saved from this in order to be saved from the consequences in the Hereafter; otherwise we will be in a very bad way. So the first action should be to make a solid intention to do Islah. No other intention should be there – this is compulsory. If his intention is not correct and pure, it doesn’t matter how many years he sits in the company of the WaliAllah. The people who did not benefit from the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam’s company were those whose Niyyah was not correct, like Abu Jahl.
So we cannot take benefit from the WaliAllah if our Niyyah is not clean. In his first Sahih Hadith, Imam Bukhari rahmatullah alayh recorded the Hadith about Niyyah; and he ended his collection with Dhikrullah. Niyyah, and Dhikrullah – because he was great Wali of Allah, who was spreading the Deen through the great Kitab that Allah ta’ala enabled him to record, Sahih al-Bukhari ash-Sharif. So look at his style: everything that a person attains is based on his intentions, his Niyyah, his will. We need to think, first and foremost, that we want to do our Islah; there should be no worldly desires or intentions. If you go to the company of a Wali of Allah for improvement, but you have one percent worldly intention, then you can sit in his company all your life, but there will be no benefit – remember this. You should go with the Niyyah that you want to do your rectification, and Allah ta’ala then guides that person. After doing Niyyah, then ask ‘Oh Allah, give me a guide. I want to rectify myself, to improve myself, give me guidance’, and Allah ta’ala will then direct that person and will guide, because Allah ta’ala has said this in the Qur’an Himself – ‘Rectify yourself; improve yourself; get the guidance.’ And Allah ta’ala has given the Tariqa – { كُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ } – ‘Be with the honest people!’ When we correct our Niyyah, and make Dua to Allah, then there is no delay. Allah ta’ala will open up the path somehow or other. He will take you to the company of the Wali of Allah.
And the sign of the Wali of Allah is that when Allah ta’ala takes you to his Friend, your heart will become attached to his heart – you will feel compatibility and a desire to be in that person’s company. Love for that person will grow, and you will start to attain peace and contentment. Allah has fulfilled that Dua that you made ‘Oh Allah, I need a guide!’ Allah ta’ala has given you that person. For this, no other measuring tool is needed; first, measure your Niyyah. Do I want Islah? Do I want to improve myself as a human being? ‘I have no intention of worldly things when I go to that company – just Islah! Oh Allah, I ask and request You.’ Allah ta’ala sends you his Wali, and the sign that he is a Wali is so easy, namely, that inside your heart you will get peace and contentment, and you will start to understand his words. The thing that you wanted, the thirst that you had, will start to be quenched through his company. When you get that feeling and emotion in his company, know that this teacher is for you. Allah has selected him and sent you to his company.
In minutes, seconds even, you will attain protection from the big diseases of the heart through the company of that person; the solution will have come. Why? Because the heart is a unique organ. I we don’t look after it, it can end up in a bad way. Hadhrat Hudhaifa radhiAllahu anh stated, in a Hadith from Sahih Muslim, that “سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُول
‘I heard from the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam that Fitnahs, trials and challenges, would come into the hearts’ – and this is that day and age, may Allah forgive! I would question whether there could be a worse generation than this! The Fitan, the trials, the challenges, these will come upon the hearts of people and will attack the hearts, because it is the heart that affects a person. So Fitnah will go towards where it can fulfil its function, and hence it will affect the hearts first. So the Fitnahs, the challenges, and the negativities will attack the heart of a person, Allahu Akbar. And what is the effect on that heart where Fitan and negativities have come? That heart which accepts negative things, into which is mixed unlawful things and negative things, due to not being protected and safeguarded, that heart which is not stopping itself from going towards wrong, then Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has told us that Fitnah will come and attach itself to that heart. And those Fitnahs will make that heart dark, and sins, wrongful, unlawful actions will follow. The Fitnah will attack such a heart and the heart will be affected. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that the Fitnah will go into that heart and affect that heart which has not been protected and safeguarded; and the Fitnah will go into the heart and make that heart black, dark.
By contrast, the heart that rejects the Fitnah, and doesn’t want it to affect the heart, and so it wards off the evil and the wrong, the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that Noor will come into that heart, a beautiful illumination and radiation will come into that heart, SubhanAllah, because that heart has been protected in the way that Allah ta’ala has told us. That heart was in the company of a Wali of Allah, so it was saved continuously, and that person said ‘Oh Allah, I want Islah!’ This is a Hadith of Sahih Muslim that we are listening to, that I am presenting to you. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has given us the complete Deen, the whole lifestyle. So if somebody protects himself and sits in the company of a Wali of Allah, Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that the heart of that person will reject Fitnah, it will reject evil and wrong. Fitnahs are descending today, but protection is there for those who have good Niyyahs and go into the company of the Wali of Allah with the Niyyah of Islah.
Remember, from thousands, one true disciple results from a Sheikh’s gatherings – why? Because the Niyyah is not correct. People get Bai’ah, they learn Dhikr and they hear the words, but their Niyyah is not for rectification. They go towards Islah, but the heart is not being controlled. But the person who comes to the Sheikh’s company properly, saying ‘I want to do Islah’, making a proper Niyyah, then due to his solid, proper intention, he is prepared to leave all of the wrong actions. He makes the sacrifices and is prepared to listen to all the words of the Sheikh. Nothing can stop him from leaving Haram, from leaving that which has been forbidden. Clearly and openly, he will leave the wrong things because he has made Niyyah that he wants to do the right thing. For example, if you make Niyyah that ‘I want to do this task or duty’, it doesn’t matter how many obstacles come, that person will fulfil that task. So you have to make the right Niyyah, knowing that you will have to leave Haram, that there will be loss – but people say ‘No no, I’m not going to do that.’ In my life, I have seen people who have left millions of pounds worth of interest in the bank. People told him ‘You are throwing the interest money onto the ground!’ but he said ‘No, I have made Niyyah to be corrected. And due to this correct Niyyah, I have the power and energy to leave all Haram now.’ But those people whose Niyyah is not correct, then there is deception and delusion, and they are Munafiqs. Even if they go to the Wali of Allah’s company, even there they are Munafiqs, because {يَكۡذِبُونَ}.
So first, correct the Niyyah, the intention. Those who have the right Niyyah are protected, they are safeguarded. They will reject the Fitnah, and it doesn’t matter if the most evil of generations arise. Dajjal’s generation will be the worst era of Fitnah, where magic will be shown, and people will be lost and think ‘Oh. He is high grade! Look at the miracles he has done - amazing!’ This will be because Fitnah has spread. Nobody will ask ‘Does he have Shari'ah and Sunnah? Does he practice it?’ Every heart will accept his words - this is the era of Dajjal. Dajjal will do all actions, and only those will be safe who have sat and taken the company of the Wali of Allah with an honest Niyaah.
I am telling you this time and time again. Do not think that every Mureed who sits with a Kaamil Wali will become Kaamil themselves. No, this is not the case. Otherwise, all those who sat in the company of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam would have become Siddique. Abu Jahl was there, as well as Utbah and other Jaahil people who wandered around, but they did not become the true, good people. But when a person comes with the right Niyyah, he becomes Salman al-Farisi, SubhanAllah – that is how great a human being can become. His example is of someone who travelled thousands of miles in order to seek the truth, to find the true Prophet, overcoming thousands of difficulties and barriers. Look at the life story of Hadhrat Salman al-Farisi radhiAllahu anh, look at his history. He wanted true, honest, sincere Islah, and he rejected things, and overcame barriers and obstacles. He came all the way from Faris, Persia, and when he reached the company of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, at the first sight, he said to himself ‘This is what I have been seeking; this is what I came for – the company of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.’ But the Niyyah is needed! If the Niyyah is not correct, you can sit all life long, but you won’t be successful.
So the heart which has the right Niyyah will succeed, while the heart which doesn’t have the right Niyyah will not. The right Niyyah and passion will not accept wrongdoing, and Allah ta’ala will put a beautiful light into the heart, such that as long as the heavens and earth are present, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam has mentioned, until Qiyamah, no Fitnah, and no evil, and no wrong can give loss to this person. And this is due to the heart being in the company of the Wali of Allah. When a person has true Niyyah and then sits in the company of the Wali of Allah, no evil can affect him, no wrong can affect him, even if he is in the age of Dajjal. And these are the people who will join with Imam Mehdi alayhi salam, those with the correct and honest Niyyah who sit in the company of the AwliAllah. These will be the ones who will join with Imam Mehdi alayhi salam and will eliminate the Munafiqeen; they will eliminate hypocrisy. People say ‘Oh, he should come quickly!’ in order to be happy and to trick him and give him some money and funds and make him pleased.
It is stated that as long as the heavens and earth are present, no evil and no wrong will be able to affect the true sincere and pure heart. As long as the earth and heavens are present, in other words, as long as the world is present before Qiyamah, nothing will affect him, Allahu Akbar. And further, that heart which has accepted the wrong, which has not sat in good company, and has not tried to do something for his heart by going to a Wali of Allah, then what is stated about that person’s condition? Allah Akbar – an Ajeeb, unique example is given. He will be like broken crockery, turned upside down, like an upside-down plate, and no good deed of his will be accepted – it won’t even enter into the vessel of his heart. He will be diminished and will do wrong actions. For example, he will not accept the pious actions and the deeds of the Shari'ah and Sunnah – he whose heart is not protected will speak against it. He will not accept wrong as wrong – the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam has stated this, SubhanAllah. This will be the sign of that person, that he will not say that wrong is wrong. Rather, what will that person be? How will the Munafiq’s heart be? Allahu Akbar – such a person will be like a bubble of Nafs, and will float around with his base desires, like an upside down plate into which nothing can enter for his benefit, or for the benefit of anyone else. He will not consider wrong to be wrong, nor good to be good, and he will run after evil and wrong.
So tell me – how essential this is, and how severe is our need! When a person arrives into the company of the Wali of Allah – { كُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ } – his heart will be protected, and he will accept the right things. Why? What does a person attain from the company of the Wali of Allah? I am not telling you theoretical things from books; I am telling you the experiences from my life. What does a person attain from the company of the Wali of Allah? We read Kitabs and books, and have examples, but enjoyment comes from a person who is telling you after experiencing these things in his life. Today thousands of people will be listening to my words, to our reading of the Qur’an, and they will be listening to every word of mine. And I am bearing witness for you, right here, as to my experience of this point.
Regarding my Islah, I was in a bad state at one time in my life, experiencing difficulties. The Qur’an is being recited in front of you, and if I hear something, the passion comes into my heart that I am living my life wrongfully. If someone is listening, he should think ‘What is the difference between me and the Munafiq? All of my actions are wrong, they are opposite.’ So the first action that I did was that I strengthened my intention: ‘Oh Allah, I need my Islah!’ This was in the darkness, in my room, on my own – these are not accounts from books, but I am sharing my own personal experiences, my own witness statement, so that you can get strength of Iman from what you are hearing. So first, I corrected my Niyyah, my need for Islah; I had no need for Dunya or worldly things, no thoughts that I would go to a Wali of Allah’s company, and then this or that would happen, I would take Bai’ah and become a Peer, run a Khanqah, earn money and have Mureeds and students – Allahu Akbar. No, no. Fear of Allah was there. In my mind I felt ‘I am finished! I am gone! I am a Munafiq, and I thought I was a Muslim. Now, today, I have realized the truth of the matter.’
It didn’t take long, alhamdulillah. First, I made Niyyah, then I made Dua and thirdly, Allah ta’ala opened the doors to the path. There was I, thousands of miles away, and my Sheikh was in a village in Gadai Shareef, SubhanAllah! You ask, then Allah will select what is correct for that person. The first thing is not ‘Oh Allah, I want a Sheikh like this, and he should give big speeches and he should be a big-shot scholar, learned, with ‘Ilm. I’ll go there, and if someone asks me whose Mureed I am, I will say that I’m a student of that Sheikh, and he’ll say ‘Oh, that scholar is your Sheikh?’ No, no, no, this is not the game. We are talking about Tazkiyya and Tasawuff, my brothers. If you want to ask, ask Allah! Allah is the one who will give you what He wants to give you – it is Allah’s selection, SubhanAllah. It is Allah’s selection. If you get someone thousands of miles away without ‘Ilm and knowledge, but he is a Kaamil Sheikh - even if he doesn’t know Hadith or Qur’an, he should be a complete Sheikh - then Allah ta’ala has given you according to your need, SubhanAllah. This is my experience – this happened with me, alhamdulillah.
So the third thing was what? As I explained, I had no link, no standard, no worldly ideas, but as soon as I met Hadhrat Sahib, my dear Sheikh, the third thing was that, because Allah ta’ala made the selection according to my Niyyah and my desire, He put love into my heart! Without love, you cannot succeed; a person who does not have love with his Sheikh, the transaction cannot take place, the business does not run! So the first thing you have to have - and I am talking about Tazkiyya { فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ۬} so we need to think about this – the first thing that needs to happen in the company of the Sheikh is that love is generated in the heart. Not fake love, but true love, in accordance to the example that the Qur’an has given about the love for Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
With this love, everything will increase, and you will be willing to give up things for that teacher, because it is love for Allah, and love for the Deen. For example, you will not want any of your actions to cause pain to his heart. Even if your Sheikh puts you through severe tests and challenges, you should never have negative thoughts about your Sheikh, or leave the company of your Sheikh; never think badly of him. It should not be that you go as a Munafiq – such a one will never succeed. You must have the right, sincere Niyyah when you go. Once you have taken the hand of the Sheikh, then ‘Wherever you are, Sheikh, that’s where I am – end of story. I will not step back now.’ This is how Allah ta’ala gives His love to human beings; this is how the hearts are saved.
Otherwise, is it a simple thing to be saved from Nifaq? ‘Oh, I will read the Qur’an, and be saved from hypocrisy. I will listen to speeches and read Hadith.’ Will these save a person from Nifaq? To be saved from Nifaq, even if you are a big Muhaddith, a big scholar, a Mufassir of Qur’an, an expert in Hadith, if you don’t learn the ‘Ilm of Tasawwuf, then your speech and your Tafsir and your ‘Ilm – all of this is a lie. That’s why we have to look at our Akaabireen. Look at the examples of the lives of these great personalities from our pious predecessors. Every one of our pious predecessors had a link with a Sheikh, and he did his Islah. And after doing the Islah, they said ‘Today we have realized. Though we were Alims before this, we have come to know that we were not scholars. Rather, we were the worst of Jaahil, ignorant people, because that ‘Ilm was { يَكۡذِبُونَ } , it was false! But today, the light has come into our hearts.’
And as mentioned in the Hadith that I shared with you, when the light comes, and the heart is brought to life, then as long as the earth and the heavens are present, no Fitnah or evil or wrong can affect the heart. And when this understanding is generated in the heart, then you hear their names today – great, great individuals in history, the Akaabireen, who are named and mentioned; they are recognized. SubhanAllah. Do you think that their fame and recognition was due to their Kitabs and Tafsirs and books? No! They attained their status from the company of their Sheikh, from Tazkiyyah. Allah ta’ala gave them their rank and status due to that. We read their Kitabs today, and we share and mention the words of these great personalities, these great Mashaa’ikh. They used to write before getting Bai’ah, and they used to give speeches, but they said ‘That was all a waste, for it was due to Nafs, to our desires. Now our eyes have opened!’ I am giving you their statements here - I am not speaking about myself. These were the great Sheikhs from amongst our Akaabireen.
So today’s Maulana, scholar, and Sufi, after graduating from the Madrasa, he thinks he is the greatest scholar and Muhaddith – SubhanAllah! What about Tazkiyya? If you look at our Akaabireen, they had great knowledge - we are reading Hadiths today due to their blessings and Fuyudh. How did the Ulema Haq become the true scholars? Via their Kitabs? Via teaching Hadith? No. They said themselves ‘We went into the company of a Sheikh, and we did Tazkiyya of our souls, of our Nafs, and cleaned the heart.’ That’s why they had no Fitnah or evil, for as promised by Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, no Fitnah or evil will affect that person’s heart, even if you are living in the era of evil and wrong. There was evil and wrong at that time also, great Fitnah. How did they challenge the Fitnahs, the innovations, the Shirk, the wrong? Allah ta’ala knows what our pious predecessors had to witness and go through to save the Deen. But they revived the Shari'ah and Sunnah, yes, because they had learned the Shari'ah and Sunnah in the company of their Sheikh, and hypocrisy had been eliminated.
So I was telling you my experience, SubhanAllah. So the love of my Sheikh came into my heart. So what happens first with a Kaamil Sheikh? The first Nasiha that Hadhrat Sahib gave, the true Kaamil Sheikh, the Wali of Allah, the Qutb al Aqtaab, the Sheikh-ul-Mashaaikh ul-Arab wal-Ajam, Hadhrat Ali Murtaza, I’m speaking to you about him - a great, great Sheikh! At the first meeting that I had with my dear Sheikh, he explained immediately how to purify the heart. He placed Tasawwuf in front of me, completely. He said ‘This is the first Nasiha, the first advice that I am giving to you’ – this was our first meeting. The first thing he said was ‘Farooqui Sahib, do Dhikr in high quantity – come, I will teach you Dhikr.’ This was number one, SubhanAllah. Number two – and this was in the first letter that Hadhrat Sahib wrote to me, SubhanAllah. This is how a Sheikh Kaamil guides the student – look at how the Sheikh turns an animal into a human being, and how company transforms a person if he goes with the right Niyyah. So what did he say? He said, ‘Farooqui Sahib, I will teach you Dhikr - do Dhikr in abundance, Katheera.’ Number two – now look. Now, Nifaq is coming out, and love of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam is coming into the heart, SubhanAllah. The heart is being imbued with the love of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and hypocrisy is coming out. ‘Lesson number two: in your earning, eating, drinking, in your sleeping, buying, selling, in your Muasharaat, societal life, in your manners, in your Ibadaat, in your appearance, in your lifestyle, your life methods – in every action of yours, the following of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam should be present.’ Allah Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahumma salli ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammad. SubhanAllah. What did he say? The complete, total solution for hypocrisy and Nifaq which Hadhrat Sahib taught me was to immerse myself in the lifestyle of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
Lesson one – do Dhikr in abundance; your heart will come into control and will become enlightened by the Dhikr of Allah. Then when the Noor comes, when the light comes, Nifaq comes out, and is replaced by what? By ‘Ishq-e-Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam, by the love of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Every action, of yours in life – eating, drinking, buying, selling, Muasharaat, society, Akhlaq, manners, characteristics, your appearance, your lifestyle method, everything should be in accordance to the style of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. This is Shari'ah, and this is Sunnah, and we are not just talking about making one’s face according to the Sunnah and wearing an Imamah, and saying ‘Oh, I’m a lover of Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam.’ No, that’s not enough! The Sheikh advises the total way of life, that in no action should you follow any guidance apart from that of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Whatever remains in your life that is against the Shari’ah means that you cannot become the Wali of Allah and you can never go into Paradise. Whether it is in your eating, drinking, Ibadaat, society, home, outside, family, running a business, in everything your guidance should be the blessed Shari'ah and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. That should guide you.
And the third thing that I understood is that through this alone you would not get the complete solution. In one sitting, after giving Bai’ah, Hadhrat Sahib opened my heart, alhamdulillah, and filled it with light and transformed me from the animal state to the pure and proper human being, alhamdulillah. The Nasiha that he gave me was that if you leave this, then that’s it – Nifaq, hypocrisy; and if you leave or disobey the instructions of your Sheikh, thinking ‘I shouldn’t have a lifestyle like this , or I shouldn’t have an appearance like this, or my character shouldn’t be like this, or my giving and taking, or my business could be Haram’ – no! You must implement everything at the same time. If you divert at any time, and allow a hole to be made so that there is a leak, and the Deen becomes contaminated, then you will fail. That’s what we call Deen. That’s why a person has to make sacrifices all life-long in order to improve himself. And this is why we need determination and courage. It is stated that the Dhikr which Hadhrat Sahib gave was to enlighten the heart, and also to give courage and determination.
And the third thing Hadhrat Sahib said was that after number one, Dhikr of Allah, and two, Sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam in all aspects of life; and third, love with the Sheikh, belief in the Sheikh - extreme love and belief in the Sheikh. Why? Because if this is lacking, this third thing about which Hadhrat Sahib advised me, this love and belief in your Sheikh, then the blessings and Barakaat will reduce and stop. What are the Fuyudh? The blessings and the mercy that you want to attain – you want to eliminate Nifaq, and to gain the love of Rasooulllah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. And if you don’t have the love of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam and all that goes with it, then this is Nifaq. The heart that does not have these things, in eating, drinking, up, down, buying, selling, going, society, environment, people you know, your lifestyle, appearance, if it is not according to the Sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, then the person who doesn’t want that in his heart is a total Munafiq. And the person who has all these things in his life is a total, complete Mu’min.
So this is the difference between the Mu’min and the Munafiq. Hadhrat Sahib taught me the feeling, the emotion in the heart, that these things will benefit you, but when? When you have total, one hundred per cent love, Aqeedah and belief in your Sheikh. Then you will attain the blessings and the mercies of these things, of the Dhikr and of the Sunnah; you will start to get the imitation and following of the Sunnah. Otherwise, if you don’t have this, you won’t attain these things. This is the journey of the Saalik. For the Saalik, all of the Faiz comes from the Sheikh. This is Tasawwuf. This is the greatest point that we need to understand, and this is how we can control our hearts through the teaching of Tasawwuf.
If we want to be saved from the painful doom, if we want to be saved from lying and deceiving – we don’t want to be the deceivers! – then pray ‘Oh Allah, we don’t want to be those who lie.’ If we want to be true, honest, sincere Mu’mins, then protect your heart, and the Tariqa has been given by the Qur’an. The prescription: number one – have the right Niyyah. Pray to Allah, ‘Oh Allah, I want to do Islah’, and then Allah will give you a Sheikh, a teacher. You should have belief and love with your Sheikh, ‘Ittiqad and Mohabbat to a very high level, and hold to whatever lessons he gives you. If not, you will get nothing from a Kaamil Sheikh.
And the first lesson and the last lesson was the same – the final letter of Hadhrat Sahib was the same. In the end, in conclusion, what did Hadhrat Sahib say? Listen. He said ‘Farooqui Sahib, the Dhikr I have given to you, all of the feelings and emotions and the rank that that you have got, are for one reason: so that it can be easy for you to implement Allah’s Ahkam and the orders of Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam, to make it easy for you to follow the Shari'ah and Sunnah of Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam. That’s why I taught you Dhikr, because from Dhikr, these things become easy and your heart is protected, SubhanAllah. Dhikr is not the objective, it is stated. Dhikr was not the objective – what was the objective? I wanted to give you Tarbiyya and Tazkiyya and Dhikr of the heart so that it would become easy for you to follow and implement Allah’s instructions and the Sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam.’
He didn’t say that he gave me Dhikr to become a Qutb or a Gawth, no, not at all. ‘You made the Niyyah, you came with the intention for Islah, so I have done your Islah and have given you Dhikr.’ Dhikr is such an action that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that everything has a cleaning agent, and the cleaning agent of the heart is Dhikrullah. SubhanAllah. To clean the heart, to purify the heart, there is nothing better or more effective than Dhikrullah. To protect the heart, there is nothing more effective. Who is saying this? Imam ul- Ambiya sallallahu alayhi wasallam has stated this, SubhanAllah, that Dhikrullah is the cleaning agent for the heart. This is his statement sallallahu alayhi wasallam. So why should a person die as a Munafiq, as a hypocrite? Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has guaranteed that Fitnah and evil will never come into your heart, never.
So make Dua, pray to Allah: Oh Allah, give us the Tawfeeq to work hard in this way so that we can protect our hearts and control our hearts.
