The style of this world with regards to worldly requirements for success, is very important. Consider the one who is successful in his business and trade etc.
He started on a small scale and then the business expanded massively.
Such a person reflects on his business trade and how much profit he makes everyday. He analyses how much stock he has, this is how much I can re-invest in the shop and according to this rule he spends his life and continues doing his trade. A person who always analyses his accounts is very unlikely to fail in his business. Very seldom you will see that this person has consumed other people's money or doesn't have money for himself. On the other hand, there are those who go bankrupt and are in bad situations. Whatever comes in his possession, he spends it and doesn't save. Assets, loans and debts are presented, but no checks and balances. Every pound he considers as his own.
As a result, this person is always occupied in distress and his business does not and will not flourish.

So the secret behind the success in business, is analysing and reflecting.

This is similar to those who reflect on their deeds and control their nafs.

Allah ta'ala says reflect and control your desires. We should reflect everyday, infact every moment! We should look out for what we are sending ahead. With how many deeds have we disobeyed Allah ta'ala?

If someone doesn't continuously ponder over what he's doing, he can never be successful in the hereafter. This is because he utilises everything wrongly. He has alot of wealth but spends it wrongly. He doesn't have a schedule in life. The most important thing is our main priority and this is the hereafter. We should focus on this. For example, we must ensure we pray all our salaah.

We should have social life but it shouldn't disturb our deen. We shouldn't lean to one side totally, rather we should keep a balance.

Hadhrat sheikh Abdul Malik bin dinar rahmatullahi alayh was a great Shaykh and
Hasan basri رحمة الله عليه lived in his generation.

Where did his status come from?

Hadhrat Malik bin dinar رحمة الله عليه's father was a servant. They were not wealthy. They led simple lives. Once they were travelling in a boat and as the boat began to sail, the captain of the boat took the fare from everyone. And when it came to Hadhrat's turn, Hadhrat said he had no fare. The caption became angry and disrespected him and threatened to hit him. Hadhrat reiterated that he did not have the fare. So he began hitting him to the extent that Hadhrat fell unconscious. When he regained consciousness, the captain began hitting him again and he said, "I will throw you into the water." Then Hadhrat saw that all the fishes from the sea had surfaced and in the mouth of every fish, was a coin - A dinar. It was the currency of that time. So the fishes came to the side of the boat and Hadhrat took the dinar from the mouth of the fish and gave it to the captain. And then Hadhrat jumped into the water and crossed the water by foot. This was a great miracle and since then his name was known as Hadhrat Malik ibn Dinar رحمة الله عليه.

So how did he become such a great personality?

The Awliyah Allah live according to the quran and sunnah and when they do this Allah ta'ala Himself instills in thier life such experiences which increase thier islaah and their strength and that is taqwa.
Every wali of Allah became a wali due to his taqwa. Not from lengthy recitations or fame or by knowledge. These factors don't make a person a friend of Allah.

Only those people will become Awliyah Allah, who adopt taqwa.

Hadhrat Malik ibn Dinar رحمة الله عليه says, "how I became such a person was due to the fact that I kept analysing my desires and instructing them. Did you do this correctly? Is this what you desire? Are you trying to make me do this?"
So after reflecting he sealed the desire of the nafs and the nafs controlled the desires.
He goes on to say, The nafs influences a person and when I notice my nafs playing games with me and tricking me, I reflect and analyse that my nafs is taking me towards wrong and not towards good deeds. So I would put the noose around nafs and I would make the nafs follow my order. SubhaanAllah!
When I control my nafs the nafs will be forced to do what I want to do.
That is how the nafs was trained.

3 types of nafs:

1) nafs ammarah, 2) nafs lawwaamah, 3) nafs mutmainnah

It is the nafs that takes one towards evil. And it is the nafs that encourages one not to fast when he is not so sick.
For example, not all diabetic people are not capable to fast. Some do have the capacity to fast so they should, instead of giving fidya without first attempting to fast. They should try one fast and check whether they are actually okay to do so.

Shariah has lay some principles down for those who should and shouldn't be fasting.

So what is this excuse we bring about?
It's Allah who brings the determination and capability for those who wish to act correctly.

When you control the nafs, the nafs will improve and change from lawwamah/ammarah to mutmainnah.
This is tasawwuf! This is tazkiya! This is why we go to the Awliyah Allah. One isn't able to do this himself.
You can't do your own mahasabah. You can't account for your own self. You need a guide for this.

Utisilising the sheets system; the review system, is beneficial because it's due to this we will pass. At least we reviewed ourselves. Allah ta'ala will look that this person is trying, He wont look at the result.
We have to try to improve ourselves and at least strive to do this!
Go to the friend of Allah and do not ask for worldly things like money, success and children. We should go and present ourselves to improve our lives and once we do this automatically all our other matters will improve too. But the key is to follow the guidance of the teacher. Avoid bringing your nafs in because when you do this, your nafs will improve.
If you sit with a wali Allah but keep following your desires, you'll never be successful.

No morning passes except that I read 5 to 6 lines from the letters of my Hadhrat sheikh's guidance.

Analysing is a beautiful thing. It doesn't bring an immediate result to our life, but it depends on our effort and that's what Allah wants to see. We need to have the desire to improve ourselves and take steps by analysing our deficiencies.
We all have defects within us. But we need to control our desires according to our capacity. What a great assistance tazkiya is!

One begins to leave the sin of lying. Even if he can't discard it after 40 days and still crosses the boxes, no problems. But for this success i am totally hopeful in Allah's mercy that we will all be forgiven if we try to make effort and follow the system.

Hadhrat Malik bin dinar rahmatullahi alai said I heard umar رضي الله عنه say, "Oh my desires fear Allah or I will send you towards punishment."
He was reminding his desires. He was reviewing and analysing. This was his self critique.
These are the ones who control their desires and perform self analysis and they punish thier desires.

For example if one tries and fails to abandon lying, he punishes his desires by avoiding something he loves, until he gives up lying totally. For example, one loves biryani so he gives up biryani until he has refrained from lying completely.

So in this way, when the pain reaches the nafs as a result of leaving what it desires, the nafs will force one to leave that sin and bring one towards good.

This was the tarbiyyah of the nafs of those righteous people.

And in fasting Allah has placed self-analysis in a way where we grab hold of our nafs by not drinking water or eating no mater how much we desire it.
For example we desire some delicious food and it is cooked infront of us but we can't eat it until Allah ta'ala allows us to, which is after sunset.
This is self analysis!
Another example-
you're newly married and your beautiful wife is sat there and the desires are there but you can't go near her so you refrain. So even things which are usually halal have become haram for us. And we refrain because we know it will be difficult to make up for this fast through kaffarah or fine etc if we were to break it.

So fasting helps us to control our desires and if we do this throughout our entire lives then we will be elevated in the Akhirah and will receive nafs mutmainnah.

Why do we obey the nafs and listen to music? The person who obeys his nafs does shirk.

For example Allah orders to keep the beard but nafs says no. So some keep it short a stubble etc and they please their desires by not letting it grow correctly.
So this is against Allah's orders but we think we are doing fine!

We should address our souls, that all things Allah has made haram, can never contain enjoyment. There can never be progression with interest and usury. There can never be progression in immodesty. You will have to account for yourself and one day you will not have the capability to repent. You will cry so it's better to realise now and Ramadan gives us the invitation to start our own self review and control our desires.

Fasting teaches us total control! So may Allah tala grant us the taufeeq to learn and understand the reality of fasting and we end Ramadan as kutab and Abdaal. Ameen
