There is a sin which many people commit and whilst doing so they are unaware.
This is the sin of ungratefulness.

Very few people are grateful. Allah ta'ala has stated in the Qur'an that He has bestowed upon us so many favours which we cannot even count.

If something is lacking in our life due to Allah's divine wisdom, we cast a veil on all the other ni'mahs Allah has provided us and we show great loss and weep over it.

Allah ta'ala says in the Qur'an, "You will not find most of them grateful [to You]."
Being ungrateful is a great sin and we must not lack in showing appreciation because one will then be included amongst those who were disobedient - the rejectors ! In others words this ungratefulness may lead one to kufr.

This is how extreme this sin can be, especially with regards to women.
Nabi ﷺ said, " most women will enter Hellfire due to being ungrateful."

If we complain, cry and shout despite possessing many bounties and blessings, shaytan takes hold of such a person and makes him repeat the wasteful statements.
If something negative effects us a little, we begin to forget Allah ta'ala.
But we must remember that if we are grateful for one bounty, Allah ta'ala will multiply the bounty for us.

There may be a king with a high status and Allah's given everything to him but hes used to being ungrateful and he compares himself to other people, saying, "this wealth so and so has, should've been mine."
Even amongst us, some possess millions of pounds and have looted wealth in thier banks but they say, "why havent i got this?" "Why, haven't I acquired this?"

These are ungrateful people and the punishment for them is that Allah ta'ala brings them down.

One who is poor and eats dry bread with salt or onion and he thanks Allah ta'ala for it acknowledging that he wasn't even capable of it, then Allah ta'ala elevates this person and increases him in sustenance due to that action. He provides him with better things than bread etc. The more grateful he is, the more Allah increases his sustenance.

One may be experiencing poverty but is so grateful to Allah ta'ala, such that whenever he receives food even if it is dry food, he is grateful and even if he doesn't receive anything, he is still grateful.
Such people are grateful in health and sickness. Even if they possess nothing they are thankful that Allah ta'ala kept them alive and existing.

Aishah رضي الله عنها narrates that one companion asked, "please tell me something astonishing about Nabi ﷺ." She began to cry and said that every phase of his life was unique. "Once Nabi ﷺ came and entered into my bed and he said Oh daughter of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, permit me to worship my Lord." SubhaanAllah!

This is the Nabi and the Prophet ﷺ fulfilling the right of the husband towards the wife. He ﷺ sought permission from his wife to do some extra worship. These are the rights of human beings towards another!
Aishah رضي الله عنها ى replied, " How can it be that I don't want your nearness, my heart feels that I give you permission."

When a husband looks after his wife alot, will there not be love in the heart of a wife? Today the biggest dispute within our homes and the reason homes are destroyed, is for this reason. "The wife doesn't love me" or "the husband doesn't love me." This is because we don't fulfil the rights of each other. If we fulfilled the rights there wouldn't be disputes.

So Nabi ﷺ asked his wife for permission because this was her time and her right.

So she replied " who would not want to rest with you when they have a husband like i do?"
She had so much love for her husband because Nabi ﷺ fulfilled her rights so automatically she had so much love so she preffered the desire of Nabi ﷺ over her own desire and she did not wish to break his blessed heart.

So if we utilise this formula and the wife looks after the husband with love and does not allow him to feel anything in his heart and if the husband looks after the wife and does not let any ill feelings be created in her heart, then our homes will become like paradise.

Aisha رضي الله عنها continues to say
"The Prophet ﷺ then performed wudu with a small amount of water and got up to pray salah and he cried so much that the tears began falling on his blessed chest. He cried in sujood and cried all night to the extent that Hadhrat Bilal رضي الله عنه gave adhan for the morning prayer.

Aisha رضي الله عنها says, "I saw all these emotions and my heart was so heavy" so she requested " Oh Prophet of Allah ﷺ why do you cry all night long when Allah has given you everything and you are free from all sin."
He ﷺ replied , "Shall I not be the grateful servant of my Lord?"

So this is the gratitude of the Prophetﷺ which he taught to his ummah. Every moment a human being should be under that recognition that Allah ta'ala has given me so many bounties that I can never thank him enough.

Nabi ﷺ said on the day of judgement those people will stand and they will be addressed as the people of Hamd (praise) and there will be a flag for them which they will go to paradise with. It was asked who are the people of Hamd?

Nabi ﷺ said, "those who were grateful to Allah in all moments of happiness and sadness." They never complained or were ungrateful.
If we look at ourselves, If there's less salt in the food, we give 70 000 complaints.
A human even begins to slander and complain to Allah in ungratefulness!

We should be appreciative from our tongue our hearts and from our body physically. These 3 things we should utilise to be grateful to Allah.

A person cannot become a muttaqi without being grateful. Fasting came to teach us how to be grateful to our Lord and fasting develops within us, the real feeling and awareness of being grateful.
So if one possesses understanding, he recognises that being grateful is very important for a human.

What is being grateful? The gratefulness of the tongue is hamd and the gratefulness of the heart is dhikr and the gratefulness of the body is to make it occupied in Allah's obedience and avoid sininning. The body should be focused on obeying Allah ta'alas orders. (We should train our body to implement Allah ta'ala's orders.)
When this becomes the state of one's body, it means he is paying gratitude to Allah.

All these factors are present within each fast (they can provide it for us) and the burden of the fast physically falls on the stomach so the focal point of the physical body is the stomach and and focal point of the spirituallness of the body is the heart.

Fasting has taught us to be grateful to Allah and Allah ta'ala saves His grateful servants from Hell and punishment.

How does the fast develop the feeling of being grateful?

Towards the evening the person is weak and due to the heat the lips are dry, the body is exhausted out of hunger. At this point one accepts and devours anything that is infront of him. He will take any drink out of being thirsty. Some countries experience extreme heat so these people desperately seek cool water.

So during this moment, the human has total awareness and recognition of Allah ta'ala's bounties. 1 date is considered such a great treasure.
When a fasting person drinks then he is thankful to Allah from his heart.
When his stomach is full, he rejoices and is grateful and his body is also happy and grateful to Allah. This is what fasting teaches us.

And this is when we realise that if Allah did not provide us with this then what would we do? Imagine if the fasts were made longer and we had nothing to eat!

Whenever we receive a blessing of Allah in our lives we should be thankful to Him just as we are when we open our fast.
Our entire life should be reflected upon that feeling we experienced at the time of breaking the fast.
We should be so thankful to Allah that we thank Him for every body part that functions.
The style of observing patience is to begin observing what is functioning and operating correctly. (Your blessings!) But shaytan starts our day reminding us of the things we don't have or we've lost and makes us cry. He makes you mention statements of ungratefulness.
When we awake in the morning the first thing we should do is read the dua for awakening :

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أمَاتَنَا وإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Instead of thinking negatively we should begin with Allah's praise and say, " oh Allah, you gave me another day and I will spend this day in a beneficial way to obey you and follow your commands."

This is the greatest worship for a human and the effect of this act is that Allah multiples all the good things for him and if there is anything lacking in his life, Allah will fulfill it for him and if an illness was to befall him, Allah will remove it from him.

When you begin the day negatively, the entire day is negative and this is how you end up wasting your life.

So fasting educates us that whenever Allah ta'ala gives us food or any resources we should be thankful to Allah.

May Allah ta'ala make us thankful beings for as long as we live. Ameen!
