We protect our houses and our buildings by securing them with locks. We ensure our doors have security and they are within our control and are not being controlled by others. Banks have secured their entrances with locks and security guards. The main element is the door as that is through which one enters.
So likewise when our door is open and is not protected, we begin sinning. If we manage our security we will also be secured and if we dont we will be in the control of someone else such as shaytan.
And thus, he will lead you to wrong doing. If it is within our control we may engage in pious righteous deeds.
If we protect our entrances nothing harmful may enter.
Shakl ibn humaid رضي الله عنه said "I came to the Prophet and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me a way of seeking refuge so that I may seek refuge by it." He said: "So he took my hand and said: 'Say: O Allah, indeed I seek refuge in You
from the evil of my hearing and the evil of my sight, and the evil of my tongue and the evil of my heart, and the evil of my semen (Allahumma inni a`udhu bika min sharri sam`i wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi
شَكَلِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلِّمْنِي تَعَوُّذًا أَتَعَوَّذُ بِهِ . قَالَ فَأَخَذَ بِكَتِفِي فَقَالَ " قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ سَمْعِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ بَصَرِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ لِسَانِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ قَلْبِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَنِيِّي " . يَعْنِي فَرْجَهُ
(Tirmidhi- 3492)
If your eyes and ears and tongue and heart aren't in your own control they be controlled by shaytan and he will bring about destruction.
We should seek refuge in allah to protect us and refuge and protection is sought through zikr.
When one directs himself to Allah in His remembrance Allah directs himself to him with His mercy. Meaning- He protects his ears eyes etc
Thats why when one remembers Allah through dhikr, he ultimately abandons sinning.
It is very difficult to abstain from sin for a person who doesn't remember Allah.
So the best way to abstain from sin is by Dhikr. Because we are under Allah's protection and refuge through Dhikr and the wasaawis of shaytan are removed.
Hence the awliya Allah always emphasise on Dhikr so one can be assisted in refraining from sins!
Allah has provided believers with a weapon which we ought to use. We must equip ourselves with this protection of Dhikr.
