Most of the Dhikr Kalimaat are verses of the Quran, so if we recite them, we are granted double rewards, which is further multiplied for us during the month of Ramadan.
If sleepiness overtakes a person, he should rise from the gathering and renew his wudu otherwise, he will become sinful due to disturbing those around him. By renewing his wudu, he will be granted more reward.
The more a person respects this gathering and conducts themselves with proper etiquette, the greater the mercy of Allah ta'ala they will receive.
Why do we partake in Dhikr?
The Sheikh connects his students to Dhikr and through it, a person is granted love for Allah ta'ala.
All the names of Allah ta'ala may be recited and they are all great names, however, 'Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem' - these names refer to the attributes of Allah ta'ala.
When a person develops a direct love for Allah Ta'ala through His personal name, “Allah,” then all of His beautiful attributes are encompassed within that name automatically. In the Naqshbandi order, a unique distinction is that the path begins with the personal name of Allah ta'ala which is a shortcut to attaining His nearness. The other orders of Tasawwuf focus on teaching and connecting through the various names and attributes of Allah ta'ala, whereas in the Naqshbandi order, the connection is established directly through His personal name, “Allah.”
What is a sign that our Dhikr is benefiting us?
When a sick person is given medicine, often, he is expected to also take some precautionary steps alongside. If he continues to consume the medicine without taking the necessary precautions, then the medicine will not have the desired impact.
Similarly, when a person engages in abundant Dhikr, yet he fails to fulfil the conditions of Dhikr, he will not be granted the benefits. We must be cautious over sinning. The more a person refrains from sins alongside performing Dhikr, the more impactful his Dhikr will become.
The deficiency is not in the Dhikr itself, for it is a complete means of cure, rather, the deficiency lies within us, in our failure to exercise proper caution and to fulfil the necessary conditions.
We may engage in Dhikr, yet we often fail to examine how much we are truly refraining from sin. We do not assess our shortcomings in character or reflect on whether our earnings and provisions are lawful. A person may continue performing Dhikr throughout his life, but it will have little effect on him if he persists in sin, for darkness and impurity cannot coexist with purity.
A person who is rude and disrespectful, yet performs Dhikr and considers himself pious, is very foolish and only deceiving himself.
Shaytan may cause you to believe that you are pious by showing you pleasing and hopeful dreams. However, true success lies in examining how much we are actually abstaining from sins.
Dhikr is an easy action and requires no physical effort. However, the effort and sacrifice required, is related to being cautious over committing sins alongside performing Dhikr. If a person fails to do this, he will not recieve the rewards for his Dhikr.
Bay'ah refers to purifying oneself through repentance at the hands of a teacher. If we become impure thereafter through our sins, we must repent again. After performing repentance, a person immediately becomes guided on to the right track.
One moment in the company of a Wali of Allah is sufficient to transform a person, for their companionship is filled with blessings. It is not difficult to reach Allah ta'ala, rather, we often misdirect our efforts toward the wrong pursuits. It all depends on how and where we choose to strive.
We must shun the sins. This is what we should work hard to achieve. Only then, a person may attain the love for Allah ta'ala.
We should not concern ourselves with whether we are granted positive visions and dreams and experience good emotions. This is not the objective of Dhikr.
The definition of love is that a person is able to easily sacrifice for his lover and this love is tested at the time of calamity. Similarly, if we love Allah ta'ala, we must prove our love through making sacrifices for Him. If our love is true, we will easily be able to go against our desires and sacrifice our sleep for Him. This is because the love for Allah ta'ala allows a person to perform all sorts of worship which others may find difficult.
The purpose of Ramadan is to create love for Allah ta'ala. This is why we perform extra worship during Ramadan and we sacrifice our hunger and thirst. This creates love for Allah ta'ala.
In the Hereafter, we will be reckoned according to how much loved Allah ta'ala and sacrificed for Him and not how much we worshipped Him. This is because worship was granted to us as a means of cultivating His love. Allah ta'ala appreciates whose who love Him.
When we begin to abandon sins and sacrifice our personal desires for the sake of Allah ta'ala, we are granted greater reward. This is why more reward is earned for praying Tahajjud, as it requires sacrificing one’s comfort, time, and effort solely for Allah ta'ala.
A person who shuns sins due to the fear of Allah ta'ala, has gained the love for Allah ta'ala and Allah ta'ala draws nearer to such a person. This is how he becomes a beloved of Allah ta'ala and gains success. The condition however, is that the servant is required to take the first step to Him.
Dhikr is not a compulsory action, however, we perform it out of love for Allah ta'ala. In this way, we are able to easily sacrifice any difficulties and hurdles which may prevent us from attending the Dhikr gatherings.
May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement these precious pearls. Ameen
