Principles of Preparation for Akhirah

Allah ta'ala will hold us accountable for how we spend our days.

Hadhrat Ali رضي الله عنه is known to have stated, "Today is a day of work without judgment, and tomorrow is a day of judgment without work."

We should not rush when making worldly decisions and plans, yet, when it comes to our Hereafter, we should hasten to do good. Unfortunately, many of us reverse this balance

We waste many opportunities to prepare for our Hereafter. The sad reality is, we do not even consider wasted time to be a loss. To live our life like this, is poisonous and we will never be satisfied as a result.

It is very important to keep the correct mindset. We should at least develop the concern for our Hereafter and even this is a great achievement.

We have one responsibility and that is to prepare for the Hereafter. The Quran was also granted to us for this reason.

This world is full of attractions and temptations, however, if we prepare for our Hereafter and follow the true guidance, we will be granted Paradise due to our efforts, regardless if we were successful or not.

We have not been prevented from enjoying ourselves. Consuming various types of food and drinks, are a form of blessing from Allah ta'ala. However, alongside, we are also required to fulfil our objective of life which is preparing for the Hereafter.

If a person prepares for the Hereafter in the correct manner, then he is upon the right path and he is accepted by Allah ta'ala.

"And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it accordingly, while he is a believer, then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated, thanked and rewarded (by Allah)." [17:19]

To strengthen our journey for the Hereafter, our intention must be strong.

In Hadith, it is mentioned that actions are according to their intentions. This Hadith was placed at the beginning of Bukhari Shareef due to its great importance! It serves as a reminder that we should constantly assess whether our actions are performed for the sake of the Hereafter.

Allah ta'ala is the one who is aware of our true intentions and He measures our deeds according to our intentions. One will only be granted rewards for his actions if his intentions were correct.

A person will only be granted the benefit of Bukhari Shareef when his intention is to take benefit and become an improved human being. The purpose of reciting and studying Bukhari Shareef is that a person prepares for his Hereafter.

Who is serious towards Dhikr?
Those who sacrifice their time to partake in the Dhikr gatherings whilst battling challenges and feeling hopeless. Despite this, they attend for the sake of Allah ta'ala and they arrive early. Such people will enter Paradise before those individuals who attend the Dhikr gathering late, are inattentive and fail to show interest and eagerness. These such people are only d
erming the work of the Deen.

We should make it a habit to divide our time efficiently throughout our day. We should dedicate some time for our necessities of life, and once our needs are fulfilled, we should fulfil our duty to Allah ta'ala, as well as performing the work of the Deen. In this way, Allah ta'ala will grant us blessings in our earnings.

He who migrates for the sake of Allah ta'ala and His Rasul ﷺ, has migrated to elevate the Deen and not for the purpose of acquiring wealth.

When one's heart is pure, he is able to witness the reality of his actions. Most of all, the human being's heart is made impure due to the love of the world.

Before we make a life decision, we must assess whether it will support our Hereafter. For example, when seeking a spouse for marriage, we should give preference to the Hereafter and assess whether our spouse will support our Hereafter.

If we place great importance upon worldly criteria, such as beauty and wealth, then we will face loss. Selecting an unsuitable spouse, will impact our future offspring later on. If a person marries for worldly reasons, his children will become misguided down the line. A righteous person may spend his entire life searching for a righteous spouse who will support his Hereafter.

Just by having a good intention, we will be granted rewards. For example, if one intends to Pray Tahajjud but failed to wake up and pray in the night, he will still be granted the reward, due to having a good intention. If a person follows up a good intention by performing the good action, then his deeds may be rewarded up to seven hundred times over.

All our deeds require solid intentions. When taking Bay'ah from a Sheikh, our intention should be to repent and improve our Hereafter. Those who have good intentions will never remain empty handed by Allah ta'ala. Allah ta'ala will always favour such a person.

If a person has sincere intentions for the sake of improving his Hereafter, then all his deeds will become in line with his intention. In such a way, he will abstain from lying, fraud and shaving his beard. He will be granted all those good qualities for which he intended for.

How to prepare for the Hereafter?

There is only one standard of life and that is to implement the instructions of the Prophet ﷺ and to abstain from what he has prohibited. If we desire to prepare for the Hereafter, then we must live according to this criteria which Allah ta'ala has laid out.

At every turn of life and with every situation we face, we should compare what the Prophet ﷺ would do in that situation.

وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ

This refers to having certainty.

Shaytan supports us with those actions which contribute to our destruction in the Hereafter. He attempts to divert us and make us lazy towards performing beneficial actions for the sake of the Hereafter.

For example, one feels fresh and eager to gaze at immoral scenes on his device late at night, however, he would be too tired to recite Quran or perform Dhikr. Thus, whenever we feel lazy or sleepy performing a good action, we should recognise the plot of Shaytan. If we remain steadfast upon a good action, then we will be granted the rewards even if we end up falling asleep in the process.

We should never
abandon a good deed once we have undertaken it.

Whenever we begin a good deed, Shaytan will seek to attack us, he will weaken our resolve. He will attempt to spoil our deeds by creating pride and ostentation within us. To safeguard ourselves from the whispers and attack of Shaytan, we must protect our intentions and our deeds by engaging in Dhikr

Our intentions may be correct, however, even then we are in danger if we have not attained Tazkiyah - self- purification. Our deeds may become wasted due to the spiritual diseases within us. This is why it is essential that we connect ourselves to a Sheikh - a spiritual physician. We must assign ourselves to teacher who will protect and guide us. He will assist us in purifying our heart so that these diseases do not creep in.

The Ulamah and Huffadh who practice the Deen without purification, are in complete loss and they have defects within them.

سَعْيُهُم مَّشْكُورًا

One who is preparing for his Hereafter in the correct manner, will be sent to Paradise without reckoning. This is how much Allah ta'ala appreciates hard work. Allah ta'ala does not seek the completion and fulfilment of our deeds. Rather, He prefers that we try to perform all actions for the sake of the Hereafter.

We should create a firm resolve to perform deeds according to the Sunnah. In this way, we will be successful. When we keep the standard of the Prophet ﷺ's lifestyle at our forefront, our lives will become filled with immense blessings.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement these precious pearls. Ameen.
