Why is Dhikr Important?

The greatest act is the dhikr of Allah ta'ala and the reward for dhikr is unique. All other worships have been stipulated with a set time and amount, however, the action of dhikr is not restricted to a certain time, amount or day. It can be performed at any time.

Dhikr is an incomparable action. A person faces great loss when he denies dhikr and is negligent from it. The greatest benefit of dhikr is that it grants a person permanent benefit. The more a person is rewarded through dhikr, the more he is attacked by Shaytan who tries to distance him from it. This is because Shaytan is destructed through dhikr.

Through the teachings of the Quran, we have been instructed to perform dhikr. Unfortunately, very few people perform dhikr today. This itself will cause us to incur much loss in the world and the Hereafter. In reality, our worship and our Hereafter is hinged upon our dhikr. Hence, dhikr is not a minor thing.

Dhikr carries a special effect. It purifies a person's heart as stated in Ahadith and the basis of our success is upon the purification of our heart. If the heart is pure, it leads a person to Paradise and if it is impure, then it leads a person to Hellfire.

Nabi ﷺ mentioned on one occasion that Allah ta'ala granted Heaven and Hellfire the ability to converse with each other. Hellfire said, "I will consume those people who were Kings and carried lofty titles in the world." Heaven replied that the gentle, simple, the broken hearted and poor people would enter Heaven.

Hellfire is a place of punishment and those who had a high status in the world will enter therein. This is because they never paid attention to their hearts in the world which eventually lead them to Hellfire. The poor went through a lot of struggle and became deserving of Allah ta'ala's mercy. This is because they purified their hearts which made them sincere and pure.

The message of this Hadith is that the condition of our Hereafter is based upon the condition of our heart. Inside the heart are defects and spiritual sicknesses. Pride is the mother of sicknesses and it is the root of sins. The one who has pride will enter Hellfire.

If the heart is impure, our worship will not be accepted. This is why we shouldn't rely on our worship especially if we have not eliminated our sicknesses.

What is pride?
Rejecting the bounty of Allah ta'ala and attributing one's success based upon his own efforts. It is to reject the fact that one's personal achievements and accomplishments are ultimately from Allah ta'ala and not from one's self. It is to consider yourself superior to others and look down upon others.

If we do not protect ourselves from this sickness, then the pride will remain within us and due to this, we will not be forgiven and will not enter Heaven.

Striving to purify the heart is a lifelong effort and physical worship alone is not sufficient for success. We must work upon purifying our hearts by eliminating our inner sicknesses. The acceptance of our actions are based upon the condition of our heart at the time.

Recognition and titles in the world is what destroys a person. Successful is that person who strives to focus upon his heart. The more we worship, the more we should make effort to purify our hearts, because pride begins to creep in to our heart through our worship.

Allah ta'ala desires that we worship Him with a pure heart. Dhikr is a great deed because it purifies a heart by eliminating the diseases of the heart. A dhaakir becomes so valuable that he earns Allah ta'ala's forgiveness immediately.

The success of the Hereafter lies in every Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, so we should live our lives according to it. We seek to memorise the Quran but we fail to ponder over its messages. We think we are deserved of Paradise, yet we are living a blind life. We fail to implement the Ahadith we have recited.

If we wish to attain Taqwa and Paradise, we must sit in the company of the waliAllah so we can receive a positive impact. This is what leads a person to success. This route is a shortcut to Allah ta'ala.

Sitting in the company of a waliAllah is better than all worship because the waliAllah is a great sign of Allah ta'ala in this world.

We should be prepared for our Hereafter. We should make an intention and Allah ta'ala will reward us through our intentions. If we regret today and we make an intention to focus upon our hearts, we will be forgiven.

We must accept that we have pride and diseases within us. We must focus on these inner defects instead of focusing on our accomplishments and good traits. We should humble ourselves and admit to our bad habits. Once we focus on our defects, they will soon disappear.

Three thing to do:

1) Find the company of a Sheikh
2) Perform the dhikr he prescribes to you
3) Do not observe your good qualities. Observe your defects.

A true waliAllah is one who is humble and considers himself lowly. He is not haughty, he will never argue with you or point out the defects of others. He can bear those who criticise him because he does not deem himself superior in the first place. On the other hand, those that have pride cannot bear any form of criticism against them.

If we desire our deeds to be accepted before we pass away, we must purify our hearts and follow the path of the Sunnah. We must find a Sheikh and begin performing dhikr whether or not we see any visible benefits from it.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
