The month of Muharram is one of the sacred months. During these blessed months we are given the opportunity to perform certain actions which will grant us much reward. Whichever worship we perform during this month, we will be rewarded greatly in return. We should not waste these opportunities of attaining reward, such as the tenth day of Muharram in which there are many virtues.
The most important deed is repentance. We must repent during these months, as the doors of repentance are opened for us and Allah ta'ala forgives us with ease. During this blessed time, He allows us to renew our bay'ah and assess ourselves. The method of achieving this, is to renew your repentance through your Sheikh or to sit down and beseech Allah ta'ala for forgiveness and for breaking the promises of your repentance.
On the day of Ashoorah, we should cook a unique dish, enjoy it and distribute it to our friends and others. Allah ta'ala will grant such a person blessings throughout the entire year. This is a reward from Him.
There are many virtues behind fasting on this day, so we should also keep a fast on this day. Regarding this fast, Nabi ﷺ noticed that the Jews would keep a fast on the day of Ashoorah. Upon enquiry, he was told that it was to commemorate the day Allah ta'ala saved Bani Israeel from Firaun. Nabi ﷺ stated "Hadhrat Musa عليه السلام has more right over us Muslims than the Jews." Thereafter, he commanded the Muslims to fast on this day too. He instructed that one should keep an additional fast alongside the tenth, either the ninth or the eleventh. Nabi ﷺ then added, "I dislike that we imitate those who are away from deen."
From this statement we learn that fasting itself is not a wrong action, however, Nabi ﷺ did not like that the Muslims imitate the Non Muslim even in terms of worship!
In reality, our worship is not accepted when we pray in the non Islamic attire. According to Ahadith, such a person will rise with the nation he imitates.
It is a shame that we proudly imitate the other nations in wasteful actions and we mock those who don’t, without considering the evil consequences our actions may bring to us.
We must assess our circumstances and realise that oppression is widespread amongst the Muslims today due to our own actions.
Allah ta'ala does not oppress us. Rather, man oppresses himself by violating the laws of Allah ta'ala. This is the message of Muharram.
We are cursed in our society due to our actions. We may perform abundant worship, however, it will not have any impact on us. Unfortunately, we have fallen under the deception and influence of Shaytan.
Allah ta'ala has ordered us to obey Him and His Prophet ﷺ multiple times in the Quran.
In fact, the entire deen and its success is based upon the imitation of the Prophet ﷺ. We should not feel difficulty in following his ways.
Deen refers to imitating and obeying the Prophet ﷺ and to practice the deen the way he did. Our lifestyle should be in accordance to his. The root cause of our destruction today, is Nabi ﷺ being unhappy with us due to our lack of practicing his Sunnah.
Unfortunately, we are so stubborn upon the ideologies and the deen we have formed that we are not interested in the truth.
During these blessed days, it is not worship which is enjoined and expected from us. Rather, it is the true messages of deen which are delivered to us. We are granted these holy days to save ourselves from Hellfire and to remind us that our loss today is due to the displeasure of Nabi ﷺ which we have incurred upon ourselves.
Practicing the deen should be our mission of Islam. Allah ta'ala expects action from us and not knowledge. In the Hereafter, we will be questioned regarding our imitation of Nabi ﷺ.
We must uphold the five pillars of Islam and imitate the Sunnah. That's it. We are not expected to fulfil beyond that. And if we do excel further, we become a waliAllah.
The reason we connect ourselves to a Sheikh and their gatherings, is so that we are given the awareness of the deen and taught the importance of the Prophet ﷺ's imitation.
The true sign of a wali Allah, is that people are transformed in his company. They live in accordance to the Sunnah completely and they gain the love of Allah ta'ala.
Islam was revived through the example of Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه during Muharram. We are being punished today for disregarding the Sunnah and we will not be safe if we continue upon our wrongdoing and negligence.
We are facing an era of severe corruption and disorder. We should not imitate others besides the Prophet ﷺ. We should love him and persevere the difficulties which we face whilst practicing the deen. A person earns Paradise through these hurdles and difficulties and by exercising patience and making sacrifices.
We should visit a waliAllah with the sole intention of learning the true deen and to improve ourselves, otherwise we will receive double sin for being a hypocrite in his company.
We must make sacrifices and migrate for the sake of Islam and for the sake of Allah ta'ala. This refers to migrating for the sake of saving the deen of our children and not for the sake of chasing wealth. If we find ourselves migrating for the wrong reasons, we will only complain thereafter that we have lost our faith.
We should only have one objective of life and that is to connect ourselves with the Prophet ﷺ and those who are connected to him and Allah ta'ala. Otherwise, those same people will take you to Hellfire as you discarded the deen for their sake.
