The Message of Arafah

There are many virtues pertaining to these blessed nights. In Ahadith, it is mentioned that the one who fasts during these days, will be granted the reward of one years worth of fasting. If a person worships through dhikr or Quran recitation during these nights, it is equivalent to worshipping during Laylatul Qadr.

The day of Arafah contains the most blessings. This is the best day out of all days. Tonight is the night of Arafah. Hadhrat Ali Radiyallahu Anhu narrates regarding this night, that Allah ta'ala instructs many angels to descend upon the earth. Allah ta'ala asks the angels what the people are seeking from Him and they inform Him that the people are seeking forgiveness. Thereafter, Allah ta'ala forgives them and makes the angels a witness to their forgiveness three times.

It is Fard upon us to perform Hajj at least once in our lifetime if we have the means.
To arrive in Arafah before Magrib time and to spend some time their is one of the conditions of Hajj. Allah ta'ala gathers the Hujjaaj in Arafah to seek His forgiveness. Here, He forgives all people regardless of their sins. The condition is that a servant should consciously and intentionally seek forgiveness from Him. The worst criminal is he who arrives to Arafah but fails to repent as this is the objective of Hajj.

Paradise is compulsory for the one who is forgiven. Thus, we must ensure we fulfil the rights of Arafah and avoid engaging in futile activities during this blessed time.

No action has been prescribed for the day of Arafah besides seeking forgiveness. Allah ta'ala has granted us an opportunity to repent. We cannot attain forgiveness without pleading to Him, which is why we must seek His forgiveness and beg Him.

All success depends upon our forgiveness. When a person keeps the fast of Arafah, the sins of his previous year and the following year are forgiven. The Blessings of Arafah is such that when people depart from Arafah after Magrib, their sins are left behind and our sins take the form of various animals.

During this night, it is more important that we repent instead of performing abundant worship.

Allah ta'ala has made it so, that the ones who are not performing Hajj can also be forgiven by merely imitating the Hujjaaj. They should not trim their nails and their hair. In such a way, they will also receive the mercy of Allah ta'ala which is descending upon the Hujjaaj.

They may also imitate the Hujjaaj by keeping the beard and abstaining from sins and in this way, they will be forgiven and their forgiveness will also be announced.

The primary purpose of this night is repentance. We must repent. Those who earn unlawfully, disregard prayer and commit sins during their lives even after taking Bay'ah, they are also in need of forgiveness as they have spoilt their Bay'ah.

The best method of repentance is to turn to a Sheikh and ask the teacher to teach repentance. Those who have taken Bay'ah already should also solidify their forgiveness.

There are three conditions of repentance. Both male and females should take hold of the Quran and make promises. Females should promise to observe purdah and to never miss a prayer. If the prayer is missed due to laziness, she must repent. Males should promise to keep a Shari'ee beard (min- fistful length) and to pray in congregation. Both must also promise to abstain from sins.

Those who perform repentance in such a way and promise to earn lawfully, Allah ta'ala will forgive them. To repent today is compulsory and all other worships performed during this night are optional.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
