Jewels of Ramadhan 2025 - Episode 19 - What is the Message of Ramadhan?

Hadhrat Aishah Radiyallaha Anha narrates a Hadith in Mishkat Shareef whereby a person came to the Prophet ﷺ. He used to swear and would become verbally abusive. Others would distance themselves from him. After the man left Nabi ﷺ's company, he ﷺ said, "On the day of judgment, the worst person is he whom others avoid due to his firmness, bad character and bad actions."

Some people have a habit of anger and arguing. Everyone in society including their own families become fed up of them. Many homes are also destroyed due to their mocking and criticism. When a person is ill mannered, others begin to distance themselves from him.

Furthermore, many of us have a habit of degrading others especially our employees and those who work under us. We display bad manners and treat them incorrectly. This is totally wrong.

Due to the impact of adopting pious company, we feel unsettled when meeting someone with bad manners. We do not like his actions, although we may be compelled to spend time with this person. In that case, we must stay silent and persevere through his habits.

If someone is verbally abusive to you, you should move away instead of fighting back with them. We should overlook and persevere when confronted with such people. In reality, when they abuse you, it doesn't lower your status in any way.

To develop and perfect our character is a great act of worship and possessing a sweet tongue is a great quality. Others love the company of such a person who has beautiful manners.

Regarding the Hadith, Hadhrat Aishah Radiyallaha Anha was surprised that Nabi ﷺ gave attention and time to the ill-mannered man. In this situation, Nabi ﷺ taught us that the man may be no good for people, however, he is not bad for the one who is rectifying him. These type of people are welcomed and embraced and are not differentiated between those who are immersed in sins and have defects and those who don't.

The Hadith teaches us that if we have bad manners, we argue and criticise, then we should take the company of the WaliAllah. Such a person should learn dhikr and take bay'ah from him so that their manners may be improved. This is why Allah ta'ala has granted us the AwliyahAllah.

Fasting is what makes the month of Ramadan special and unique. This is the glory of this month. However, fasting is a very delicate action. Alongside refraining from food and drink, we must control our desires and Satanic influences. If we do not protect our fast, we will receive nothing from our fast besides hunger and thirst. The real hard work during fasting is to refrain from sins and abusing others, otherwise, our bad actions causes our fast to become invalidated.

Those who try to eliminate their bad habits and adopt excellent conduct, when they break their fast, the angels announce forgiveness for their sins, Allah ta'ala praises them in the heavens and their ranks are increased. This is because such a person controlled his mind from evil thoughts and his tongue from curses.

When one is confronted with an ill-mannered person, Shaytan implants an evil thought in his mind. One may not have the ability to kill or fight back, so Shaytan encourages him to use his tongue in anger. As a result, Shaytan causes him to destroy his fast. This is because such a person didn't follow the direction of Allah ta'ala.

Allah ta'ala enables us to continue this hard work of abstention during Ramadan even outside Ramadan through adopting the company of our Sheikh. The Sheikh enables us to continue upholding the principles of Ramadan.

Throughout the rest of the year, our Sheikh perfects our imaan and develops us. He prepares us for Paradise by enabling our deeni promotion. Therefore, we should not criticise him and think evil thoughts regarding him. His heart is full of love for his students and he prays for them during the night. Our Sheikh desires to lead us to Paradise, thus, we should appreciate him and stick to his company. Through his blessed company, light is developed in the heart and one becomes closer to Allah ta'ala.

We should be grateful to Allah ta'ala for granting us such beautiful company of the waliAllah. We should not disobey him as Allah ta'ala sent us a guide to remove us from the depths of darkness.

Everyone must adopt the company of the WaliAllah no matter how learned they may be. No matter how much we consider ourselves pious, we must visit the waliAllah. If he is already our teacher, we are not in need of any other company.

If we possess a bad tongue, we must correct ourselves during Ramadan. Allah ta'ala granted us the AwliyahAllah so that we may adopt their company and repent at their hands.

Some people desire to escape Ramadan and its injunctions. They travel abroad during Ramadan in order to be removed from the environment of Ramadan. Such a person is wretched. This example is likened to a person who has the company of the waliAllah, yet, he runs away from him. He does not wish to be improved as a Muslim. He does not desire to begin praying, keeping a beard and adopting good mannerism.

He does not wish to wear the amamah, although his status is increased many times due to wearing it. Those people who adorn the amamah for prayers, every one of their prayers are multiplied by seventy times in reward.

In reality, Ramadan is saving us from wretchedness. The fast is what encourages us to prevent ourselves from sin and the company of the waliAllah develops the same quality within us. Those who run away from their company are the worst people on the day of Judgment as they prefer Hellfire.

During Ramadan, many of us resort to lengthy Quran recitations and voluntary acts of worship. However, the essence of Ramadan is to cease our bad habits such as lying and immoral gaze. We only become close to Allah ta'ala once we refrain from these sins.

Ramadan reminds us that we are impure and not even worthy of worshipping. We must save ourselves from sins because if we fast in such a state, our fast becomes Makruh.

Although it is not Fard or Wajib, we should sit in I'itikaaf in the masjid with ease. It is a great worship whereby we remember Allah ta'ala, reflect over our defects and purify ourselves. This is why I'itikaaf has been given to us.
Allah ta'ala announces forgiveness every time we sit in the gatherings of dhikr, just like He invites us towards forgiveness every night in Ramadan. The more we sit in the dhikr gatherings, the more we will be forgiven.

The great Shuyookh who have permission from their teacher and are connected with an order, do not talk wasteful talk. Their gatherings are for us sinful people and not for the righteous people who already spend their entire lives like Ramadan.

Allah ta'ala sends His servants to the pious people for repentance. This is out of Allah ta'ala's love for us. He has granted us the entire month in order to achieve forgiveness from our sins and be safe from Hellfire.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
