Jewels of Ramadhan 2025 - Episode 7 - What Do You Gain by Staying Awake at Night?

Nabi ﷺ explained the greatness of this month so that we do not spend it in negligence and laziness. The moments of Ramadan are so valuable that they cannot be compared any other moment from our entire life. There is much goodness in this month and these moments will soon end. Even the pious people in their graves today are envious that we have attained Ramadan. We are extremely fortunate to be blessed with this month.

In a Hadith it is mentioned that Allah ta'ala decorates Paradise from one year to another year, particularly for the Ramadan month that will come again. Such a beautiful and melodious breeze emanates from Paradise in welcome of this month.

The maidens of Paradise begin to call out saying, "Is there anyone who would like to ask Allah ta'ala for us in Nikah through their good deeds?" The whole world transforms during this month.

This is such a great month in which a person attains forgiveness and salvation with every second. We should spend this month with caution and reduce our worldly actions and tasks.

Allah ta'ala will place immense blessings in that worldly task you delay and cease for the sake of Ramadan. If a person abandons worship due to being occupied in the world, he may never attain those actions of Ramadan even if he tries for a hundred years afterwards.

We should control ourselves and make effort to fulfil the objective of this month. If we delay our worldly things, we will receive better results and there will be the blessings and the mercy of Allah ta'ala within our actions.

Nabi ﷺ said that the one who honours this month, Allah ta'ala will protect him from disgrace in this world and the Hereafter. The companions questioned how to honour Ramadan and he ﷺ mentioned that a person honours this month by refraining from sins.

If a person sins, does not control himself and does not repent, Nabi ﷺ has given a severe threat for him. In both worlds, he will be degraded and Allah ta'ala, His angels and those in the heavens will curse such a person as he sinned and disrespected this month. If he dies in this state without repentance, he will be thrown in to Hellfire without hesitation and none of his good deeds will be accepted

We must improve our deeds during this month, however, the greatest action is to uphold the honour of this month by refraining from sin.

The glory of this month is that if a person sincerely repents in this month and turns to Allah ta'ala, he has attained this month. He must not sin, nor waste time. A person should spend this month according to his own status and his faith.

If a person is given great worship and great company, then he shouldn't waste it in this month. He shouldn’t miss a single gathering as this is a month to earn more. We should understand the importance and honour of this month.

Unfortunately, some people fast but earn nothing besides hunger and thirst. They understand the purpose of fasting to be simply refraining from food. However, the purpose of Ramadan is to exercise caution.

A person should enter Ramadan having purified himself from sin through repentance. He should control himself from every sin during Ramadan.

A person's love for Allah ta'ala increases during this month and this month is given to increase our love for Him. During this month, He has granted us those acts through which we can strengthen our love for him.

We cannot increase our love for Him if we are sinning. Thus, we should repent and then uphold the principles of this month in order to attain His love.

In reality, those who love Allah ta'ala are those who do not have love for sleeping. They are desperate to rise during the night and remember Allah ta'ala. We must adopt this quality in order to become a beloved of Allah ta'ala and become His friend.

The greatest action is to remain awake during the night. This was the quality of all the AwliyahAllah. They love the night as they love to remember Allah ta'ala in seclusion. They are free from disturbances and worldly distractions.

Allah ta'ala calls out to His slaves at Tahajjud time. A person who truly loves someone desires isolation so that he can meet his beloved in solitude.

If we wish to become His beloved, we should remain awake or at least wake up during the last portion of the night to pray Tahajjud. If a person cannot do this, he cannot be included in the list of Allah ta'ala's beloveds. He cannot attain Allah ta'ala's love.

This Ramadan has arrived to increase our love for Allah ta'ala. The nights of this month are special as they give us the opportunity to meet Allah ta'ala. Generally, during the rest of the year, we not pray Taraweeh prayers, nor partake in suhoor so during Ramadan, we are given less time to sleep, due to worship.

This is what Allah ta'ala is making us practice during this month. If we wish to become His beloved, we must not fall in love with sleeping during the entire night. We should not restrict this habit to Ramadan only.

First, we must repent. We should not fast whilst we are singing alongside otherwise, we will be cursed by Allah ta'ala and His angels throughout the entire year.
We should refrain from music, immodesty and all actions against Shariah. Those homes in which these sins are committed are cursed and they are not considered true fasting people.

Fasting is not simply refraining from food and drink. Rather, we fast so that we may become His beloved. Thus, the first thing we need to do is refrain from sin. If we fail to do so, we should not fall in to deception that we have succeeded.

Fasting should change us for the better. It should cause us to turn to Allah ta'ala and not focus upon our worldly gains. Such a person becomes devoted to Allah ta'ala and does not receive satisfaction from the world.

Ramadan teaches us to remain awake at night.
The Hur announces that she has been created for that person who detaches himself from his bed at night and he remembers Allah ta'ala.

From now on, we should rise for Tahajjud and not just for Suhoor. We should rise to remember Allah ta'ala and not for simply eating because spiritual elevation and promotion is gained during the night. It is the time to seek Allah ta'ala's nearness.

Allah ta'ala has given us thirty days to practice remaining awake at night so, we should make it a habit. We should promise to never abandon the prayer of Tahajjud for the rest of our lives.

Tahajjud is the most superior voluntary form of worship. It is not a compulsory action, rather, it is a high grade prayer. Allah ta'ala hasn’t made it compulsory for our ease, however, it is compulsory upon those who are seeking the love and nearness of Allah ta'ala.

When we sacrifice our sleep for the sake of Allah ta'ala, Allah ta'ala grants us much more in return.

If we remain awake at night, it will allow us to pass the bridge of Siraat easily and it will cool down the fire of Hell. We should rise early during this month to remember Allah ta'ala. This is the method to have the love of the world removed from our hearts and have our hearts purified.

Allah ta'ala knows the state of our heart and He knows our thoughts. It is such a shame that we spend Ramadan incorrectly.

We should detach ourselves from the bed during Ramadan and complete our sleep and our tiredness in Muraaqabah.

If you seek to increase something, it is only increased and strengthened further. Thus, the more you increase your sleep, the more you will desire to sleep because your body is used to the habit of sleeping a lot. However, the person who is used to seeping for a few hours, is used to remaining awake for a few hours and is completely fresh during the day.

We should detach ourselves from sin through repentance as a sinner can never become close to Allah ta'ala. Rather, he is close to Hellfire.

The main message of Ramadan is to strive to refrain from sin and to perform dhikr in abundance. These actions have been recommended in Ramadan by Nabi ﷺ.

Those who do not spend their Ramadan in such a way are wasting their Ramadan. This opportunity will not come again so we must spend these days solely for the sake of Allah ta'ala.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
