Hadhrat Aishah Radiyallaha Anha narrates that the month of Sha'ban is most beloved to Nabi ﷺ because it is attached to Ramadan.
Ramadan and Sha'ban are to prepare for Ramadan so that we can attain all the blessings of this month and not waste it. Hadhrat Anas رضي الله عنه mentions that the goodness of Ramadan become distributed during Sha'ban, so the objective of this night is Ramadan.
15th Sha'ban is a blessed night during which a person performs a special worship known as repentance. The blessings of this action will continue towards Ramadan and a person attains the goodness of Ramadan through it. If he wastes this opportunity, he will lose out from the blessings of Ramadan. Our entire Ramadan depends on this action as this prepares us for Ramadan.
Allah ta'ala has specified worship during certain portions of the day and night. Only if we worship during those appointed times, we gain the impact and benefit of that action otherwise, we do not. We can not create our own schedule against Allah ta'ala's.
There is no compulsory worship specified for this night, however, we must repent. Even if we cannot perform any other action, we must ensure we repent. If we fail to do so, we have wasted the opportunity.
During this night, Allah ta'ala opens three hundred doors of His mercy and they remain open until Fajr time. Allah ta'ala calls out towards those who are searching for His forgiveness so that He can forgive them. This indicates that the purpose of this night is to repent.
In a Hadith mentioned in Tirmidhi Shareef, ...."Verily Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, descends on the night of the fifteenth of Sha‘baan to the lowest heaven, and He forgives more (people) than the number of hairs on the sheep of Bani Kalb.”
Repentance purifies a human being and it causes a person to earn Allah ta'ala's forgiveness. We should forsake all other worship during this night and focus upon this. Repentance is the only worship which gains Allah ta'ala's pleasure. Allah ta'ala becomes immensely happy which means the rewards He provides to such an individual who repents are limitless.
Whoever repents during this night, his Ramadan is made prosperous and whoever's Ramadan is made good, his entire year is made good.
If we fail to repent, we have missed out on the blessings of Ramadan because Ramadan is based upon forgiveness. Whoever repents during this night and performs no other worship, has attained this blessed night.
Allah ta'ala does not demand us to remain awake the entire night worshipping Him. In fact, if we pray our Isha and Fajr prayer in congregation, we are given the reward of worshipping the entire night. Furthermore, if we remain sitting after Fajr and perform dhikr, we are given the reward of one Hajj and one Umrah. It doesn't matter which sins we have committed, Allah ta'ala will forgive them if we repent to Him.
In essence, it is difficult for us to remain awake all night long in worship and it is an easy action to repent, however, we still fail to repent which is a shame.
Each of us face some sort of problem and difficulty, including those who are wealthy and hold status. Allah ta'ala holds the solution to all our problems. When we repent, Allah ta'ala fulfils our needs, eliminates our problems and removes our difficulties. He does not leave us empty handed and He will open all doors of goodness for us. He will grant us what we seek from Him.
Allah ta'ala desires us to repent sincerely from our hearts and not from our tongues. The tongue speaks but the heart testifies it, so we should repent from the depth of our heart.
We should converse with Allah ta'ala and admit and present all our sins. We should seek His forgiveness and fulfil the conditions - Have regret for sin, acknowledge the sin and make a promise not to repeat the sin.
We should not be afraid after making this promise as Allah ta'ala is with us. Allah ta'ala will protect us and help us to fulfil our repentance. Even if we sin again, He will forgive us, so we shouldn’t waste this opportunity in fear of falling to sin again.
Whoever considers himself safe from sin is the most foolish person. It is inevitable to sin living in this world, however, we must take the remedy which is repentance. Repentance after sins causes a person's ranks to be elevated and in fact, the pious predecessors attained their ranks due to having repented to Allah ta'ala. Thus, we should make it a habit to immediately repent after committing sins. By adopting this system, no person may enter Hellfire.
Allah ta'ala has made this easy solution, but due to Shaytan’s influence, laziness and pride, we do not submit to Allah ta'ala.
Pride is what prevents us from repenting. If we wish to perform excellent repentance, we must repent through a Sheikh as this is the sincere repentance which Allah ta'ala has mentioned.
Through this repentance, making a promise and fulfilling the conditions of repentance, Nabi ﷺ prays for such a person. Allah ta'ala forgives him and is a witness to his repentance. Such a person will find the strength and will gain the attention and blessings of his Sheikh. Allah ta'ala will instruct the earth to wipe out the traces of his sins.
The way to recognise a person's piety is that upon seeing him, you remember Allah ta'ala and your heart testifies that he is pious. You should accept such an individual as a waliAllah.
You should take hold of his company. If you reject the signal of your heart, you are considered a hypocrite and will be punished.
In reality, the company of a pious person is what grants a person success. Allah ta'ala places the impact within the teacher so that he can benefit mankind. Allah ta'ala instils the capacity of guidance within the Sheikh.
We should not be ashamed in emulating the Sunnah. We should emulate his ways openly. The true Sheikh is he who instils the love of Nabi ﷺ and his emulation within you. He connects you to Allah ta’ala and His Nabi ﷺ. We should visit a Sheikh with this purpose.
Ramadan is futile without forgiveness. We should begin and commence Ramadan with repentance. If we repent alone, we will fall prey to the attack of Shaytan and desires. If we repent through a Sheikh, Allah ta'ala will assist us by enabling our rectification through his company.
After repenting, we should seek our needs from Allah ta'ala. We should perform dhikr and voluntary prayers. Thereafter, we should rest and then rise for Tahajjud and Fajr. Then, join the dhikr gathering.
