Welcome Rabbi-ul-Awwal
The Prophet ﷺ was sent to the world during Rabi-ul-Awwal for the sake of the entire universe. It is a month of happiness and a blessed month through which we will be given great reward for our worship.
These gatherings are held for the rectification and purification of our inner soul. The purpose of Nabi ﷺ's arrival is to teach rectification and purification of the inner self and cleansing of the spiritual heart. This is what equates to good character.
If we forget the objective for which Nabi ﷺ came, we cannot attain anything in our lives.
His ﷺ objective was to teach us to smile, invite others for a feast, harbour no hatred for others, remove enmity and deceit and develop a genuine and pure heart. When a person's inner self is improved, his heart becomes purified and this is the worship which the believer must achieve. Once he achieves this, he is granted forgiveness and his deeds benefit him, otherwise, they become a burden for him.
We engage in physical worship and demonstrate our apparent love for the Prophet ﷺ. In reality, the way to show true love is to attend the Khankah in which the true deen is taught via the Mashaikh. Here, a person connects himself with a Sheikh and learns the education which the Prophet ﷺ himself presented. Tawajjuh of the Sheikh has such an impact whereby good character begins to rub on to the student.
Whoever attains this education, will be granted Paradise and all his worship and good deeds are accepted. Such a student may not achieve overall excellent conduct, however, Allah ta'ala appreciates his effort and he will be made successful due to his effort.
Worship is only a small portion of deen and its purpose is only to demonstrate gratitude to Allah ta'ala. It is not considered the entire deen. Before physical worship was introduced, Nabi ﷺ exercised and demonstrated the worship of excellent conduct for forty years of his life. Even his enemies recognised him as trustworthy and those who had no faith, presented their issues to him. This itself is worship which we lack in today.
Physical worship is not the be all and end all. It certainly holds great weight, however, only if performed in the correct manner. In reality, the effects of our prayer are demonstrated away from the mosque - when we are sat at our workplaces and within our business dealings. It is demonstrated within our professions. Good character is the only action which can be demonstrated and it causes a person's rank to become elevated.
One who has excellent character, his business will flourish and will attract customers. Due to the purification of his heart and control over his desires, his house will be full of happiness and comfort. This is the essence of the Prophet ﷺ's message and this was his education for mankind.
Good character and moral conduct are central tenants of Islam. The previous nations were developed through good character. Our deen was never spread through the sword and non believers were never compelled to enter Islam.
Furthermore, Islam does not condone destructive actions. Instead, it underlines the importance of maintaining good character. It encourages believers to respect all places of worship. It reiterates the imperative of not harming others' places of worship, as such actions are considered unislamic.
No matter how much worship one performs, on the day of Qiyamah, his heart will attest to the lying and cheating he committed, as well as the envy and hatred he possessed for others. His deeds will then be transferred to those people he wronged and he will burdened with their sins. Nothing will be left for him in his book of deeds and a debt will remain upon his head.
"Our Lord! Raise from among them a messenger who will recite to them Your revelations, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them." [2:129]
This is the education which the Prophet ﷺ taught us although we have no concern nor preparation for it. We do not even consider it a part of deen and in the process we reject the Quran which mentions the Prophet ﷺ's purpose. We are unaware of our character and the rights of others. The only thing we concern ourselves with is money and all of this has had a negative impact on our society.
If it wasn't for Nabi ﷺ, we would be burning our daughters alive and circumbulating the Ka'bah Shareef unclothed. Today we have left the true deen of Islam. We have rid ourselves of good conduct which is why immodesty and animalistic instincts are strife amongst us.
If a person desires forgiveness, he should take hold of the correct deen and Dhikr is a practical method and resource to enable this.
"O believers! Do not let some ˹men˺ ridicule others, they may be better than them, nor let ˹some˺ women ridicule other women, they may be better than them. Do not defame one another, nor call each other by offensive nicknames. How evil it is to act rebelliously after having faith! And whoever does not repent, it is they who are the ˹true˺ wrongdoers." [49:11]
Allah ta'ala warns us against mocking and reviling others. This is against good character. When people are verbally or physically abused, the effects are lasting. This is why Allah ta'ala forbids us from criticising and ridiculing others.
We have been forbidden from harbouring false suspicions against each other and against prying on the affairs of others. We must eliminate these feeling in order to create a positive atmosphere. We have also been forbidden from backbiting. Backbiting is to say something behind a person's back which he would dislike if uttered in his presence. If the quality is not present within that person, then it is considered slandering against him. This act is considered as though one is consuming the raw flesh of his brother
These are all the sins which go against excellent conduct. These are the deficiencies and maladies within us which generate from our base desires. Thereafter, they imprint upon our heart and it impacts our physical actions.
Such severe sins cause a person's faith to become eliminated and his worship is rendered a waste. It is inevitable that we will develop these spiritual sicknesses living in the world, however, we must cure our sicknesses through the solution given by Nabi ﷺ.
Allah ta'ala encourages us to take the cure from the physician. Those who do not adopt the cure and they do not repent, are arrogant and depriving themselves of Allah ta'ala's mercy.
We must repent, otherwise, we are arrogant and we will be raised among the worst sinners. Whoever cures himself, will become the best Muslim and will be greeted by the angels
Every person should have concern over his spiritual sicknesses and should seek the solution for his sins, just like he seeks a cure for his physical ailments.
Allah ta'ala has provided us with certified teachers for this task. He enables us to repent by visiting a Wali Allah for our repentance through the pledge of allegiance. It is unfortunate that we fail to work on our spiritual improvement by searching for a Sheikh. One cannot be rectified and his character cannot be improved without visiting a Wali Allah who is qualified to rectify him.
The cure takes effects when we sit in the company of the Sheikh and engage in dhikr. These spiritual diseases will naturally become eliminated from our heart. This is because such students develop the habit of working upon their inner selves. They have adopted a great structure of life as they are constantly trying to avoid sin whilst implementing the Sunnah.
Allah ta'ala is pleased when a person makes the effort of visiting a Sheikh. This is because he is putting in the effort.
If we make an intention to attend the dhikr gatherings with the intention of removing our sins, then the sins will become extracted. The more strong our intention is, the more positive impact we will receive and the stronger faiz from our Sheikh.
The correct way to celebrate Rabi ul Awwal is to improve our character by assigning ourselves to a Sheikh for self rectification.
May Allah ta'ala enable us to implement. Ameen.
