Nabi ﷺ mentioned that a human beings success is based upon his end. Our state can any change at any time. Each of us should not become complacent with our current condition because the real success lies at the end of our lives. We can't guarantee that we will depart this world with strong faith which is the real success. Thus, our life requires constant effort, struggles and concern for the Hereafter.
If you're negligent with regards to concern for the Hereafter, then you may slip up and fail. The real test is based upon dying with faith.
Emotions and faith is connected to the heart. The heart is a organ which fluctuates. Sometimes you feel passionate to practice and sometimes you don't. It's emotions do not stay constant. If you can maintain and control your heart, then you'll be successful in the Hereafter. Those who are negligent of their heart, can slip up any time in their life.
It is common that when a person begins practicing and abstains from sin, he begins looking down upon others. In reality, one should be careful of deeming others insignificant because they fail to practice. We shouldn't abhor those who commit sins, otherwise it means we have pride within us. In reality, our pride makes us worse than the person we compare our self to. Even if one does not express himself verbally, his actions demonstrate that he considers itself to be better.
The lesson is that arrogance is a very dangerous sickness. We shouldn't trust our deeds today. Rather, we should focus on preparing for our death as we do not know the state of our death. A genuine good person is he who dies as a good person.
Our challenges regarding our wealth and family may stop us from dying with faith. Those who succeed through their trials and save their faith, will be given a great reward by Allah ta'ala.
We should never trust our heart that it will remain strong until the end. We should never have trust that our Imaan will be constant. In reality, the Shariah and the Sunnah is what will save us.
We should live with caution and not advance towards the things which Nabi ﷺ prohibited. Don't lift your eyes towards non Mahram. Don't be confident in your piety. Don't consider yourself pious whilst glancing at incorrect things. We should always lower our gaze. Even a person who has worked hard his entire life, can be misguided due to the attacks of Shaytan.
The modesty of a man is his lowered gaze and the modesty of a woman is in hiding her face and her beauty.
Nabi ﷺ taught the Sahabah how to greet each other correctly. There is much reward in greeting others with Salaam and responding to the Salaam. The quality of greeting is that a person typically greets whom he likes, loud and clearly. Whoever he does not like, he will not greet properly. Islam teaches us that when we greets anyone correctly, we are testifying with our greeting that they are a good person.
Nabi ﷺ gave advice to Hadhrat Abu Sulaym رضي الله عنه and commanded him to never speak ill against anyone and not to curse anyone. Furthermore, he should not point the defects out in anyone. This is deen. Whoever develops his character like this, becomes a Wali Allah. If we act against this during fasting, then we have spoilt our fast.
Instead of focusing on the qualities of others, we tend to highlight their defects and sins. This person then detaches himself from society and he advances further towards wrongdoing because he is being criticised.
On the other hand, the wali Allah will never speak ill against you and consider you a bad person. He will never look at your defects. Rather, he will focus on your good qualities. He holds hope in the sinners and encourages them.
How can a person improve if you look down upon him?
People swear at the sinners and mock them even when they come to the Masaajid. They get put off Islam due to being criticised and their hearts become broken. The Wali Allah purifies him and removes his defects and thereafter, society considers him well.
When you shower mercy upon a person, you will naturally pull on their heart. Thus, we should make a habit of assessing a person himself and not the defects of a person. Just like he can be improved and become a better person, similarly the good qualities can be removed from you at any time. His sins could be removed and your good deeds can be removed. Perhaps your good deeds may be given to him at the time of your death. Thus, you will not be the better person, rather, it will be him.
You should consider everyone around you to be better than you. The Wali Allah have this emotion and they truly believe this with their hearts. You should also develop this genuine emotion.
The Awliyah Allah have made preparations for the Hereafter which is why they will die with faith. This is because they never consider anyone to be better than them and they don't point out other peoples defects. They do not criticise anyone and they consider themselves lower. A real Wali Allah will never have confidence and arrogance over his own deeds.
If you don’t have humility and simplicity, then you are the most wretched person. The greatest preparation for our death is to never consider someone to be lower than you. We must save our Imaan through this. When we degrade our self, then our Imaan will be protected.
If a sinful person asks for assistance we shouldn't belittle him. Rather, we should treat him better than we would treat our self. We shouldn’t mock and disrespect them, otherwise they won't practice the Deen. Through such conduct, he will begin loving you and have confidence in you and his life will change.
The biggest thing is ones treatment with other people. We should treat everyone equally and adopt humility. If we don’t have this, then we are nothing at all.
We should learn how to forgive and become humble. We should respect others and we will become a great Wali Allah. This is attained via the company of the Sheikh. No hadith book or Darul-uloom can teach you this humility.
One moment in the company of your Sheikh with a good intention, will grant you humility and you'll become a Wali Allah. The Sheikh injects the good within you. Even then, you should keep fighting the desires within so that the good is maintained. We should reject the wrong path and we should have courage and determination to practice.
We should place our Hereafter in front of us. We should not run after the world which will leave us and spoil our Hereafter in the process.
The Wali Allah never demands respect and service. Rather, the heart is compelled to submit and respect him. When a person desires to serves his Sheikh, it is because he considers his Sheikh to be better than him.
When a person fears his Hereafter and the state in which he will die, then it becomes easy for him to reject the evil. This is because his desires have been crushed.
The wali Allah fears over his own conditions. He never become angry. He is concerned over his death. The wali Allah will also never delay in teaching you good. It depends on your intentions and desire.
Bay'ah is a contract made with Allah ta'ala. If we want to attain Paradise, then we must fulfil certain conditions. In return, Nabi ﷺ will pray for such a person. His sins will be forgiven and converted into good deeds. A student who turns back after repenting with the teacher will be punished.
If we take hold of a Sheikh, fulfil our promises and do dhikr, we will be successful.
The battle of Khaybar took place and it was a great battle. There was an African shepherd who was herding the goats. He witnessed the noble Sahabah sitting in the Prophet ﷺ's company displaying the most excellent respect towards him. He wanted to greet the Prophet ﷺ so he went and the Prophet ﷺ asked, "What can I do for you?" The sheperd inquired about the basic teachings of Islam, and then said: “What will my status be if I accept Islam?” Nabi ﷺ replied: “I will embrace you, you will become my brother and enjoy the same rights as other Muslims.” He said: “I am very poor and in a bad state. I am totally black and have bad odour coming from my body and clothes. How will you embrace me if I am in such a condition?” Nabi ﷺ replied: “I shall embrace you, for all of Allah’s servants are equal in His sight.” He said: “If I embrace Islam, what will my fate be?” Nabi ﷺ said: “I bear witness that if you accept Islam, Allah will change the darkness of your body to light, and the bad odour to good fragrance.”
Thereafter, he embraced Islam and enquired about his obligations. Nabi ﷺ mentioned that they were in the midst of war, thus the obligation at this moment and time was to participate in the battle. He participated in the battle and was amongst the martyrs. Nabi ﷺ recognised his body, thus addressed his Companions saying, "I see with my own eyes that he has been given a bath in the sacred water of paradise, and Allah has changed his darkness to shining white and his bad foul smell to refreshing fragrance."
