These are 4 orders of Tazkiyah. Chishtiyah, Soharwardiyah, Qaadriyah and Naqshbandiyah. There is no difference between these 4 schools. Allah ta'ala sent the Mashaaikh according to the people of their generation. He taught them the lessons and the styles of teaching.
Today, we live in the era of the Naqshbandi school and this order is connected to Hadhrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. In this modern age, we are extremely busy. We lead hectic lifestyles and we are occupied in trade and travel. We are required to simultaneously worship Allah ta'ala, obey His laws and also purify our inner selves. For our purification, we must exert ourselves and work hard. The methods taught by the Mashaaikh of the previous generations, were to sit in isolation or embrace the wilderness and engage in a set amount of dhikr. Now, in this modern day and age, the Naqshbandi order has arrived. Hadhrat Khawajah Naqshband Rahmatullahi alayh, the founder of this order, prayed to Allah ta'ala asking for such a dhikr which gains Allah ta'ala's love in an easy way and attains His nearness quicker. This is so we could continue to live in the world without making too much effort. The Naqshbandi order doesn't stop us from our worldly affairs, rather, it fits our modern era and it is what suits us today. It continues to bring progression to our deen. The hard work we make today is actually equivalent to the hard work they made amongst the previous nations whereby they would isolate themselves for forty days and abstain from food in order to please Allah ta'ala and purify themselves.
The more we remember Allah ta'ala, the more we are purified. Today, we run our businesses, and remember Allah ta'ala in our hearts alongside. By doing so, we achieve a higher status than those of the previous generations.
Follow any profession, become an engineer or a doctor. Spread yourselves out! Do all the businesses and trade your desire, but do not forget Allah ta'ala. Your hands and body may be occupied in worldly work, but your heart should be connected to Allah ta'ala. This is the Naqshbandi teaching of dhikr. Detach the world from your heart but carry on working in this world.
Allah ta'ala created the Mashaaikh for the purpose of rectifying people. Tazkiyah is very important because only with purification, our worship is accepted.
We require external purification of the limbs to carry out deeds and we require inner purification of the heart for the acceptance of our deeds.
Without external purity, we cannot worship and similarly, to take the deeds to the level of acceptance, we must purify our soul. The more our inner self is cleansed, the greater chance of our worship being accepted. So, deeds and purification are both important.
After fulfilling our compulsory deeds like the five prayers, we must turn our attention towards making them accepted in the court of Allah ta'ala. Shaytan has deceived us and encourages us to perform more voluntary acts without focusing on bringing our faraaid to the level of acceptance. He has deviated our attention away from that. This is why the people of wisdom and intellect focus more upon purifying their inner selves. They don't perform voluntary worships and lengthy recitation. They perform little but with quality. This is what Allah ta'ala loves and desires from us.
We face much corruption and evil in this era. It is a tough generation we are living in through which we are required to practice our deen. This is why the pious predecessors teach us that the faraaid are enough to make us succeed. They are so brilliant that we don't even need to perform voluntary actions. Thus, our pious predecessors emphasise on the purification of the inner state. They teach us that purifying our actions is the real effort we must strive for.
In reality, the act of purifying our deeds proves difficult. You will pray tahajjud, but you will struggle to lower your gaze. You will pray tahajjud, but fail to save yourself from backbiting. You will possess all the knowledge, but with a dirty soul. You will carry inner diseases within you like enmity, jealousy and pride and ostentation. These are grave sins for which a person may be destined for Hellfire.
It is for this reason we require a Sheikh; to recognise our sins because Allah ta'ala inspires their heart with our weaknesses. A mirror reveals your physical defects. Similarly, a Sheikh is the mirror which reveals your inner defects within you. He fulfils a very great role in your deen. This is why it is essential to keep a Sheikh. Those who are sincere and have fear of Allah ta'ala and the grave, visit the Sheikh with caution. They imitate the Sheikh and obey him just like the companions obeyed the Prophet ﷺ. Those who are wasting their time and are insincere, will disobey their Sheikh and won't pay attention to his instructions.
This path of having a teacher is a very sincere path and it will take you directly to Allah ta'ala. The more sincere you become, the more you will obey your teacher. The objective isn't the Sheikh. The objective is Allah ta'ala but the Sheikh is the means towards Allah ta'ala. We should take hold of his teachings, his education and guidance. If he has defined something as a sin, we should exercise effort in abstaining from it and Allah ta'ala mentions that He is with those who are sincere.
The practice of achieving acceptance of deeds is what is known as Tasawwuf. This is not an innovation, but a critical part of deen. Through this path, you are not only implementing your deen, rather, you are solidifying your deen and solidifying your prayers.
There is benefit in sins because if we didn't sin, we'd become angels. We are in fact humans and the angels are envious of us because of our innate quality of sinning. Likewise, Allah ta'ala has made mankind the most noble and superior form of creation, not because of our physical features, but because we have the ability to sin. The one who sins and repents is very beloved to Allah ta'ala. He loves when we return to Him with belief that He will forgive us. Thus, we shouldn’t become despondent over our sins because repentance elevates our status. Sins in fact enable us to become better through our continuous repentance.
We must follow the Shariah no matter how much of a tough generation we live in and no matter how difficult it becomes to practice. It is the dhikr of Allah ta'ala which grants us the power and ability to save ourselves from sins. The more a person engages in dhikr, the more his eyes submit to Allah ta'ala, the more modest he becomes and the more he recognises his sins and repents.
We recite Khatam Khawajgãn by sending reward to our pious predecessors via the verses of the Quran. This is how we repay their favours as they taught us dhikr. Every Sheikh in our order has a specific dhikr kalimaat linked to him. These verses of sadaqah jariyah have been revealed via divine inspiration. When the Sheikh receives the reward, the blessings and light of the teacher begins to descend upon the heart of the dhaakir. This is not a tradition or an innovation. This is a method which has been prescribed.
The greatness of this Silsilah is that all Naqshbandi students imitate the Sunnah and their deeds are according to the Sunnah. If the Naqshbandi students were truly innovators and against the Sunnah, how is it that they become so close to Allah ta'ala? Therefore, it is wrong propaganda to claim that the Naqshbandi order is an innovation. Instead, one should try to understand the reality and look at the great effects of its teaching.
There are principles of this order.
1) Repent from sins.
2) Adorn the Sunnah attire. Lengthen the beard and dress in white. One may wear his uniform whilst at his workplace only.
3) Complete the Tazkiyah sheets. This provides a connection with your teacher and you can attain his blessings. Our progression is through having company of our Sheikh and this is achieved by adhering to the sheets system. This system helps us to remain cautious over our sins and enables improvement.
4) Engage in the dhikr prescribed to you by your Sheikh, morning and evening.
It is advisable for the student to listen to one bayan of his Sheikh everyday even whilst he is occupied with other duties. He should listen for a minimum of five minutes. In this way, he will be given such beautiful advices that it will make his day ahead, brilliant. This is spirituality and the way to revive the messages of the Awliyah Allah.
May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen.
