Why Do We Do Dhikr?

Allah ta'ala loves it when His servants assemble together and remember Him during the ending time of the fast, after having left behind their occupations and their families, solely and sincerely to remember Him. Due to this action, He forgives His servant.

We work hard in our lives to attain Allah ta'ala's forgiveness, but with ease and love, Allah ta'ala forgives us due to performing dhikr. This is a great reward. We should be thankful for this great blessing, because despite all our sins, Allah ta'ala announces our forgiveness in the presence of the angels.

Ramadan has come to train us and refresh us. It teaches us to live our lives as we spent it in Ramadan - praying in congregation in the Masjid and attending the dhikr gatherings. Allah ta'ala reminds us that we have the capacity to keep voluntary fasts and pray Tahajjud, we just need to be determined!
We shouldn't become lazy after Ramadan and we shouldn’t forget these learnings of Ramadan.

If a person's direction of life has changed, it means he has definitely benefited from Ramadan. But if he returns to his old ways, then he is not grateful to Allah ta'ala. The most beloved person to Allah ta'ala is he who is most grateful, and the way to express gratitude is to engage in dhikr.

When you are grateful for your blessings and grateful for worshiping Allah, then Allah ta'ala promotes you. The most precious person in the Hereafter will be the most grateful person.

The first attack of Shaytan is that he makes a person abandon prayer, he takes him towards disbelief and ungratefulness. When a person becomes ungrateful, then he becomes deviated and he goes into darkness and rejection. Therefore, Allah ta'ala has prepared a solution to ward us from Shaytan and that is via the dhikr of Allah.
When we remember Him, we are the ones who benefit. He doesn’t need us to remember Him, as every atom and particle in the world remembers Him. It doesn't increase Him in status and He is independent from our Remembrance. He orders us to do dhikr, because He wishes us to benefit.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا . وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلا

"O believers! Always remember Allah often, and glorify Him morning and evening." [33:41-42]

Allah ta'ala addresses the believers here, with love and affection. There's no sternness here. So imagine how much Allah ta'ala loves the one who He has enabled to do dhikr.

Allah ta'ala has gifted us with many favours and doesn't want us to be ungrateful to Him, which is why He orders us to remember Him.

Hadhrat Sheikh Saadi رحمة الله عليه says that there are two hidden gifts in breathing. To exhale and to inhale. Through the act of breathing, we are alive and Allah ta'ala gives the permission for every breath of ours to be taken.

Our ranks are not elevated through worship. Rather, when we are thankful to Allah ta'ala, then our ranks our elevated. A person who is not grateful to Allah ta'ala, becomes arrogant over his worship. This is a big defect in him although he seems pious to those who view him outwardly.

To be grateful for our worship, is acknowledging that we were not capable for worshipping Allah ta'ala as He ought to be worshipped. He could've caused us pain which prevented us from worshiping Him, because everything goes according to His order. If Allah ta'ala causes our finger to be in pain, then we would be prevented from many actions. Hence, we should be grateful for everything.

Many people have the wealth to attend Hajj and Umrah, yet, haven't been given the ability to go.
On the other hand, many people in parallel, have no passport or documents and have no worldly resources, yet, they rely on Allah ta'ala to take them. Allah ta'ala prepares the means for their journey.

We have a habit of expressing gratitude to Allah ta'ala when we are given. However, if Allah ta'ala does not grant our desire, we should still be grateful and in this manner, we will receive.
Our connection with Allah ta'ala should be like this.

One who is grateful, is aware of His Lord, He believes in His Creator and he accepts that his ability and his blessings, come from Allah ta'ala and can be removed at an time. In such a way, pride does not enter his heart, because he knows that it is from Allah ta'ala and not him.

Why does Allah ta'ala order us to remember Him in high quantity? Allah ta'ala's blessings are unlimited and uncountable, so, we should engage in dhikr limitlessly, in order to be grateful for all these gifts.

The Dhaakir is constantly thankful to Allah ta'ala, regardless if he is conscious of this fact or not. This is because he is grateful to Allah ta'ala whilst performing every action. We should remember Allah ta'ala the same way we remembered Him in Ramadan and with this gratitude, we may witness the next Ramadan.

Whatever Allah ta'ala instructs us to do in the world, He grants us the resources to fulfil them too. Allah ta'ala has set requirements and preconditions for each worship in order for them to be accepted.

We should learn the dhikr of the heart this Ramadan so we can remain grateful to Allah ta'ala whilst we are sleeping and awake.

Those people who take the gift of dhikr and then reject it, will be given a severe punishment. Those who have learnt dhikr, should appreciate and value dhikr.

Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه said that there are people who pray and perform other actions, however, those who remember Allah ta'ala in Ramadan, are forgiven beyond forgiven. This is because dhikr is a high-ranking worship.

Ramadan is about to depart and if you fell short in giving in charity or engaging in dhikr, you can pull yourself together now and complete those actions you didn't do before it departs. We need to see what’s lacking within us and strive harder. We should ask for forgiveness for our lack of dhikr and then Allah ta'ala will grant us equivalent reward for the entire Ramadan.

We should learn dhikr from a Sheikh so our hearts can be a in a constant state of dhikr, just like Nabi ﷺ would engage in Muraqabah, in the cave of Hira.

Success is based on dhikr and the one who doesn't do dhikr, is ungrateful and the one who is ungrateful, is nothing in the eyes of Allah, yet, the one who is grateful, is the most beloved to Allah ta'ala.

Learn dhikr and perform it how it is rightfully due. If you pray twice a day, you're not considered a regular observer in prayer.
Similarly, the one who does abundant dhikr in the heart as prescribed by Allah ta'ala, morning and evening, alone or in the gathering, then he is a Dhaakir and Shaakir. This is what Ramadan came to teach us.

May Allah ta'ala accept all our worship and may He allow us to continue sitting in these beautiful dhikr gatherings.
