What is the Base of Spirituality?

Occasionally, a person lives a good life with no challenges, yet, he feels something lacking within him. He faces a desperate situation and even through his prayers and worship, he remains unsatisfied. This is the emotion one feels when he does not have Allah ta'ala in his heart and it is this emotion which inclines a person towards dhikr and the company of the Wali Allah.

Until we do not have the thirst and desire of seeking Allah, we cannot seek Allah ta'ala. When you seek Allah with pain and love, then you find Him by your side immediately. When Allah ta'ala's love enters a persons heart, he feels peace and contentment.

Anyone can possess this emotion within them wherever they are, for it is not confined to a selected group of people nor a certain area. A desperate heart within a village can also attain the nearness of Allah ta'ala.
A good construction of a building is dependant upon a solid foundation. The stronger the foundation, the stronger the building. If the foundation is weak, then the building will be weak. One may able to construct a building, but it may not be able to withhold the storm and the attacks of Shaytan and nafs. This is how he collapses. One who has a strong foundation can withstand the greatest storms and can go against all his desires. Similarly, there were great sinners who later on excelled in Tasawwuf and became a means of guidance for others.

We should strive to strengthen our foundation. No matter how high our building goes, it won't collapse, as long as we keep our eyes on the destination.

Allah ta'ala sends the Sheikh for the students rectification, the dhikr of Allah ta'ala is just the path. The real purpose is self reformation, so if you don’t acquire any improvement via the dhikr gatherings, then you cannot succeed.

The worst poison is the nafs which doesn't allow us to get closer to Allah ta'ala. During this month, Allah ta'ala trains us how to oppose our desires. If we control our nafs, then we can attain Allah's nearness and paradise.

The main thing is to consider the focus and attention of your Sheikh, as a cure, consider him the doctor of your heart and allow his beautiful words to penetrate your heart. That's when you will succeed.

The Sheikh teaches us to analyse ourselves to recognise what is lacking within and it is Allah ta'ala's grace that he has granted us this. Fighting with our nafs is the tussle and argumentation which Allah ta'ala loves and through which a person is elevated. When the Sheikh teaches a student and then leaves him in the field fighting with his nafs, then his Sheikh becomes the referee and he watches his student to see how his student defeats his nafs. Once he conquers it, then the Sheikh is given Kashf of the news that this student has succeeded and not to leave him empty handed from the gathering.

Ramadan equals Tasawwuf and it defines Sufism. Allah ta'ala sent the manual of Sufism to us in the form of the Ramadan and we find the message in its every page. The first lesson of Tasawwuf is to crush one's desires.

The Kalimah لا means 'nothing else.' There is no hunger or thirst. The reality of fasting is not hunger, rather the reality is إلا الله. That's why we should implement this kalimah in our life and crush our desires in this month. The Wali Allah receive such magnificence and glory in this month and whatever is attained in this month cannot be attained in any other month.
When the dhikr gathering takes place, the illuminated angels also attend. The more angels that attend, the more faiz and blessings upon that gathering.

If you want to seek Allah ta'ala, then you must perform repentance. This is the base of everything which gives success. The more strong a person's repentance is, the more stronger his foundation is and the more he will attain the heights. If you are weak in repentance, then you will remain left behind. You will collapse and it is because you have a defect in your repentance. You are not working on the promises you made.

Repentance is to believe in Allah ta'ala and obey His instructions. Thereafter, the nafs becomes destroyed. The challenge starts when you fight with your nafs in order to obey Allah ta'ala. This is where you must take the assistance of Shariah - uphold what is lawful and abstain from the unlawful.

Allah ta'ala is pure and does not accept impure worship or impure repentance. When one receives self-awareness and caution in his life, then his repentance is accepted in the eyes of Allah.

After one repents, be becomes illuminated, his affairs are rectified and his entire life is transformed after repentance. Piety is not in chasing the world after repentance. Piety is having contentment and satisfaction in the heart regarding Allah's ta'ala's will. For example, you are poor, but you're happy. You don't have any concern about tomorrow and how you will fulfil your objectives. These are all whispers from shaytan. Instead, we should place our trust in Allah ta'ala.

Every breath of ours which is exhaled, goes to Allah ta'ala's court, then it takes permission and it is returned and inhaled. This is life. If you take a breath without remembering Allah ta'ala, then it is returned to you in the same way, with the effects of shaytan present. But if you're a dhaakir and you're pure from sin, then when your breath ascends, it is mixed with the magnificence of Allah ta'ala and returns to that person. This is how a person reaches the heights of spirituality. This is promotion. Thereafter, he advances towards Allah ta'ala and that's when he becomes satisfied. A persons Tawakkul in Allah makes a person content and confident. Then he become brave as Allah ta'ala is with him on that journey.

Hadhrat Rabiya Basri رحمة الله عليها says that even our repentance requires repentance. Repentance is the foundation of spirituality. Unfortunately, we repent and despite that, we are still doing actions which require repentance. We repent and then repeat the sin.

In reality, we should give up everything which is wrong even if it means making a massive sacrifice in order to repent Allah ta'ala. The nafs is crushed through genuine repentance and not through dhikr. You can perform dhikr the whole day, but your nafs can overtake you in the evening and you will perform sins with ease. Thus, it doesn't matter how much worship you do, your nafs will attack you. The nafs will only be destroyed once you oppose it.

The Aalim hasn't been given status because he learnt and taught Bukhari Shareef. One scholar can take unlimited people to paradise with him and one scholar can also take unlimited people to hellfire with him. Both are scholars. The true Aalim is he who practices upon his knowledge and purifies himself. He understood that he would be punished severely if he opposed his knowledge as he was gifted with the awareness. He must have extreme caution in his life. His status is raised due to his taqwa. They became famous due to their Taqwa, not their knowledge.

May Allah ta'ala grant us the ability to implement.
