Why is Dhikr Essential in Ramadhan?

The beauty of this month is that Allah ta'ala is continuously showering His mercy upon us. The greatest loss for a person this month is to remain heedless because a heedless person is not granted anything. If one spends a moment of this month with negligence, then he will be deprived.

For example, a man is extremely thirsty and a river is close by. When he reaches, he has no container with which he may quench his thirst. The pious people have used this example to explain that we must take benefit of this month and ensure we have the container to receive it's blessings. That container is a pure heart. If we have a pure heart, then we may receive the full benefit of Ramadan.

If the container is impure, it cannot be utilised to drink water. Similarly, our hearts must be pure for them to be impacted and the way to purify it is through dhikr. Whoever’s heart is not pure, he remains deprived of this month.

سَنُرِيهِمْ آيَاتِنَا فِي الْآفَاقِ وَفِي أَنفُسِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ ۗ
"We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this ˹Quran˺ is the truth." [41:53]

There are external and internal signs as pointers which direct us towards Allah. Only those who recognise these signs, can reach the truth.

This Naqshbandi order is not a joke. These Lataaif are the internal pointers within us which receive and absorb Allah ta'ala's mercy. Fortunate are those people who have had their Lataaif revived by a Sheikh.

Everyday Allah ta'ala constructs a palace for the fasting person. Every palace has 7000 doors made out of gold bricks and 7000 angels are present to welcome him. This is for the person who fasts and attains the Mercy of Allah upon his Lataaif.

Every moment of Ramadan is full of Allah's Mercy. However, we can only be deserving of it if we work hard to attain a pure heart. This is through the glory of the dhikr of Allah.

The entire deen and all acts of worship depends on the dhikr which you perform. If a person attains a pure heart via dhikr, then he receives the light of those deeds. If your heart is impure, then you cannot receive the magnificence of your worship.

Every second, the dirt of the world gets attached to the heart, so Allah ta'ala has made it compulsory for us to engage in abundant dhikr morning and evening. This is how our deen will be perfected.

Whoever spends his life with abundance of dhikr (constant dhikr of the heart), he will receive blessings in his life, blessings in his sustenance, blessings in his knowledge and in his children. He will receive blessing upon blessing.

We complain that Allah ta'ala does not listen to our prayers and remove our calamities from us. I believe that the cure is to act upon the Quran and you will find the solution.

When a Sheikh puts his finger upon your heart, your heart will remain alive even in the grave. A person dies when his heart dies and a man is alive when his Heart is alive. The one who doesn't do dhikr has a dead heart and the one who performs dhikr, his heart is alive.

A person who recites Quran, fasts and gives zakat with a dead heart is similar to the act of feeding someone who is dead. The action will not benefit him in any way.

Our prayers do not affect us because we have dead hearts. In reality, the quality of prayer is such that it prevents a person from immorality and sin and leads a person towards good.

Every action is connected to the heart. If your heart is alive, then your prayer will be elevated.
The one whose heart isn't purified is the one who is wasting Ramadan, so we should strive hard this Ramadan to engage in abundant dhikr and have our hearts purified.

We should be thankful to Allah ta'ala for all these blessed gatherings. He has given us valuable opportunities for dhikr without us even requesting it. How can we then abandon the worship which Allah ta'ala has emphasised in the Quran?

We should engage in dhikr and also abstain from sins alongside. When a person engages in dhikr abundantly morning and evening, then Allah ta'ala removes him from sins and brings him towards the light. Such a person who does this is a Wali Allah. If he refrains from the major sins, his supplications will definitely be accepted.

Hadhrat Umar RadiyaAllahu anhu said, "I heard Nabi ﷺ say, "Whoever performs dhikr in Ramadan is forgiven."

Those whose hearts are pure, become enlightened themselves. The same mercy which descends upon the kabah, descends upon the heart of a believer. His lataaif begin to absorb It. These are the blessings of Ramadan.

Often, we fast but we have not improved. Rather, we become worse. We engage in sin alongside fasting. We should strive to absorb the light and the mercy this Ramadan, otherwise we will be deprived forever.

The method of reaching Allah is by having love for a pious person. This order is not a line of sternness. Allah ta'ala says about the Prophet ﷺ,

"It was thanks to Allah's mercy that you were gentle to them. Had you been rough, hard-hearted, they would surely have scattered away from you." [3:159]

When you go to a Wali Allah, you will also experience this. He shows love and affection even towards those who mock and criticise him. The Wali Allah prays for the guidance of those who are against them.

People would approach the Prophet ﷺ and request him to prescribe them with an action. He would prescribe them one simple action which was easy to perform. Once the individual accepted the action and rose to leave, Nabi ﷺ would declare that he is a person who is guaranteed paradise. This is because this person will perform the action from the depths of his heart and it will impact him.

Therefore, we should focus on improving our hearts so that the mercy is absorbed within us. If your hearts are purified, then you can even settle upon the Faraaid action and it will suffice you.

A person does istighfar to keep shaytan away and does dhikr to attain Allah's Mercy. The pious people keep their hearts open so that they can always receive the mercy. And they constantly repent so that their sins can be removed.

May Allah ta'ala grant us the ability to implement.
