Which Ibadah Should be Done on the Night of Baraat?

On this blessed night our accounts are prepared and our deeds are presented. A persons sustenance is distributed and his destiny is written for him.

Many people occupy themselves in worship throughout this night, although a specific worship has not been stipulated for this night. Engaging in worship is meritable, however, there is one great worship for which Allah ta'ala has ordained this night. We must fulfil the objective of this night otherwise it will not benefit us and will go to waste.

The purpose of this night is to please Allah ta'ala so that we can attain Ramadan and its blessings and so that we can succeed. None of us can claim to be free from sin as Allah ta'ala has instilled within us the capacity to sin and nafs and shaytan are present. Allah ta'ala is displeased with us due to our disobedience. If you want to please someone you assess their weak point and present to them what pleases them the most.

Allah ta'ala is pleased with our prayer and fasting, but we cannot fulfil our prayer to the standard which befits Allah ta'ala. We are not able to fast to that standard which pleases Allah ta'ala. But there is one worship through which Allah ta'ala becomes pleased immediately and that is the action of Repentance.

Generally we are required to purify ourselves before engaging in any worship, but for this worship, even if we are impure, Allah ta'ala is pleased when we perform it. No worship guarantees Allah ta'ala's pleasure besides repentance.

The world curses and hates the sinner, but when a sinner turns to Allah, Allah ta'ala loves that person the most and not only that, He praises him amongst the angels and bestows blessings upon him. When Allah ta'ala becomes happy with someone, then the entire creation becomes happy with them.

"Allah is more delighted at the repentance of His servant than one of you who lost his riding animal on a journey in a barren land while it carries his food and drink. He loses all hope as he comes to a tree to lie down in its shade, despairing over his animal, but suddenly he finds it standing over him. He takes hold of its reins and then he greatly rejoices...." [Muslim]

Mankind are separated and superior from the other creations due to our innate inclinations towards sins. Nafs and shaytan prey on us and make us sin. So Allah wishes to see if we forget him or turn to him after we sin. Even if our sins reach the heavens, we should not cease to repent after sinning.

Despite our sins, Allah ta'ala has kept us alive and healthy. He grants us respect via the people. He provides for us and sustains us. He covers our terrible sins, such that if the others were to find out, they wouldn't even want to know us and we'd be destroyed. He is merciful and waits for us to turn to Him in repentance.

We should disregard the whispers of shaytan and remember that Allah ta'ala is the most merciful and after repenting, He also causes one to forget his sin.

Allah ta'ala descends to the lowest heaven on this night. Allah ta'ala is not restricted to space so it means that Allah’s mercy is extremely close to us on this night. Due to this Mercy, Allah ta'ala's forgiveness is unlimited on this night and He announces forgiveness for everyone on this night besides the idolaters, those who breaks family ties, the one who does drugs, those disobedient to their parents, the immodest women, those who gamble and the alcoholics. However, if they repent, they will also be forgiven.

"Indeed Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, descends to the lowest Heavens during the night of the middle of Sha'ban, to grant forgiveness to more than the number of hairs on the sheep of (Banu) Kalb." [Tirmidhi]

Forgiveness on this night is so great that it's blessings remain until Ramadan. We should repent from those sins we did unintentionally and intentionally because often even the good deeds we commit, turn into sins.

Istighfar via the tongue is not considered true repentance. Sincere repentance is made from the heart. For this we require inner remorse over our sins. This is the condition of repentance.
Nowadays, our hearts have become hardened and we find it difficult to weep and accept our wrongdoings. Shaytan and nafs make us stubborn and prevent us from repenting.

If we cry even to the extent that our eyelashes become wet, then that is considered true repentance and through this, we will be saved from Hellfire. After repenting, we should shun that sin immediately and make a firm intention to Allah that we will not commit that sin again. This is sincere repentance and the way to become Allah ta'ala's beloved tonight.

The sign of a persons repentance becoming accepted, is that he finds it very difficult to commit that sin again, because when a person repents, Allah ta'ala promises to assist him and prevents him from repeating that sin. This validates that it will be difficult for him to repeat that sin. He may commit other sins but not the one he repented for.

If you're disobedient to your parents, then your worship is futile. Obey your parents, regardless of how stern they are. Treat them with respect. Pray for their wellbeing and seek their forgiveness for the wrongdoing you have caused them. Consult them for your matters and take their blessings.

If your parents have passed away, then seek forgiveness for mistreatment towards them and seek forgiveness on their behalf. Pray Allah ta'ala raises their ranks in paradise.

Nabi ﷺ went to the graveyard on this night to seek forgiveness for others. So we should also not forget our deceased. We should pray for them and give charity on their behalf.
If you cut ties with others, then seek forgiveness as this is a great sin. Physical worships are considered below the worship of maintaining ties. You should maintain family ties with those who break ties with you instead of saying, "so and so doesn't meet me." Relatives are also a path to Paradise.

After your parents pass away, connect with their loved ones and relatives. Through this worship we will find so much pleasure which one is not able to attain even via Tahajjud prayers. Through this noble action, you attain a very high level of forgiveness.

This night shows us that we should leave this world in such a manner that our parents and relatives are happy with us.

Allah ta'ala has opened all doors and anticipates our repentance until fajr so we can become clean prior to Ramadan. Whoever has intended repentance on this night, then consider his repentance done, but the effects of our repentance should be visible in the morning. This should be a life transforming change and you shouldn't revert back to your sin. Shaytan will tempt you and tell you that you cannot bear abandoning this sin, but now you have Allah ta'ala's assistance with you. Allah ta'ala considers this promise to leave a sin, a great transaction and grants a person paradise in return for it.

It takes people years to forgive your misdeeds in this world, yet Allah ta'ala embraces you with His Mercy and becomes pleased with you immediately.

Firaun was 900 years old and Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه was 150 years old. Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه asked Allah why He allowed Firaun to live for this long and Allah ta'ala replied, "although he disobeyed me, but when a distressed person came to him with a need, he would help them, thus, my mercy did not allow me to destroy a person who benefits my creation so I extended his life."

There is no greater worship than having mercy in your heart, forgiving others, seeking forgiveness and respecting elders.

May Allah ta'ala grant us the ability to implement and make the most of this blessed night.
