Rewards for Saying Salam
Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh, who is a very famous and well-known Companion, had a unique style – and every Companion had his own colour and style. He narrates a Hadith, saying ‘I was eight years old when I went into the service of the respected and honourable Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and started to live with him.’ This was an extraordinary honour that he obtained amongst the Companions. His mother took him to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and said, ‘Oh Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, please accept my child in your service’ – and what a child he was. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam generously accepted him into his service, and so from that age, he was in the service of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Imagine – from the age of eight, he had that company!
If you take the example of a person who keeps the company of a Wali, a friend of Allah, it is stated that if a person sits for one moment in the company of a Wali of Allah, that moment is better than one hundred years of worship performed with no showing off. Why? Because his Iman is elevated and progresses, and Iman is the greatest asset. Allah ta’ala has highlighted this attribute when saying { يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِين}. The Qur’an states this clearly, and that is why you should seek pious company and sit in the company of pious people. Now that is the example of sitting in the company of a Wali of Allah, a pious person, so what about Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh, who had the company of the Imam-ul-Ambiya sallallahu alayhi wasallam? Imagine the Noor and the Barakah and the Hikmah in his life, and how the other Companions must have envied him! That company was not normal company – this was day and night in the company of the Imam-ul-Ambiya, so what great things Hadhrat Anas must have seen, alhamdulillah. Imagine then how unique and brilliant are the words of Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh, and the colour and style and effect of this Hadith, and how precious its words and lessons must be.
So Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh narrates the first Nasiha that the gracious Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave to him when coming into that honourable company, and he presents them in the service of the Ummah. This is what Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh is saying. How great a communication this must be – the first advice, the first great gift that Imam-ul-Ambiya is giving to Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh. What tremendous words they must be, and what a big part of the Deen must be contained in that message – may Allah subhana wa ta'ala give us the Tawfeeq to do Amal on this. Ameen. So what were the words of advice that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam communicated to Hadhrat Anas? He said that the Holy Prophet Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said ‘Oh Anas, when you enter your home, then first and foremost, present Salam to the people of the house. Give Salam to them.’ Imagine how great an action this is – think about it. What a great deed this is!
Now Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh said that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave this in the form of a Nasiha, and there is a difference between Hukm and Nasiha, between instruction and advice, SubhanAllah. Hukm is Hukm – it is firm and strict - whereas a Nasiha is given with love and affection. That is why it is stated that if your Sheikh gives you a Nasiha, it is not the same as a Hukm; there is love and affection embedded within it. There is pain in the heart, a pain which Allah ta’ala develops in the heart for the other person. So Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh stated that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave him a Nasiha, saying ‘When you enter into your home, the first action that you should do is to present your Salam to the people of the house.’
It is obvious that if Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam gives a gift, then it is not a minor thing that he is giving – imagine what the reward of that action is! There will surely be a great reward for that action. Imagine the great reward for the Sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam and what Allah ta’ala gives for that action. Imagine – what will Allah not give? We don’t know what the reward is for giving Salam in the way that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, do we? But Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam did not withhold any information that we need, for we should realise its value and not live a life of negligence and laziness. May we not become lazy in performing this action.
Now, obviously, we all know that sometimes when you enter your house, there is some disagreement or issue with someone. Maybe a brother and sister have had a bit of a clash, or perhaps there’s some friction with aunty or between and the husband and wife, or there may be some tension or negativity concerning the children, or some issues may have arisen with them, but when the man enters his home, he should forget all such quarrels and issues, and he should forget about who is in front of him and whether his son or his wife has been arguing with him. All such issues and problems and negativity have to be forgotten so that you can accept this gift from Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam; the first thing you need to do when you enter the home is say ‘Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.’ This is the first thing – make this binding upon yourself. There is a phrase in Punjabi that means ‘Write this upon your heart.’ This is such a simple, beautiful Ibadah – we cannot get better than this in our destiny. Look at the reward – Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has told us about one great reward for this action.
This is a gift, a gift that was given to Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh. He was a Khadim, and after giving service, the gift that person gets for that is a great gift. The rank of a Khadim is very high. I remember a Hadith whose meaning is that on the Day of Judgement, a pious servant, a friend of Allah, will be told ‘Go into Jannah without any accounting.’ He will enter Paradise without any reckoning – SubhanAllah, there are people like this in the world. Alhamdulillah, they have crushed their desires and their Nafs and have annihilated their lusts; this the test and challenge for us. On one side there are sugar-coated options, and the right thing may seem so bitter, but when you start to suck the sugar-coated things there is such bitterness underneath. You know when you take a medicine or a tablet, sometimes it is written on the package that it has been coated so that it does not taste bitter, but still, after a while, your whole throat becomes bitter. Sins are the same, and when we speak of people as being pious and on a high-level, remember that we are all the same. How did he become pious? By controlling his Nafs for the sake of Allah. He feels like doing something wrong, but he says to himself ‘I won’t do this because I don’t want to displease Allah.’ That is the one reason and the biggest factor behind his Maqam.
All these things we are doing – Salah, Dhikr, Ta’leem, Tableegh – they all have a reason and a common denominator behind them, and if you don’t have this Niyyah and are not attaining this, then all actions are a waste. Dhikr is a waste and every Amal of ours will go to waste if we don’t have this reason, this intention, this concept, this thinking and this factor behind our actions. We should think ‘What do I want to obtain from this action that I am about to do? What I want to do is to control my Nafs and use it in accordance with the instruction of Allah ta’ala. I don’t want to leave it wild to do what it wants, and I don’t care how much my Nafs pesters me to do this and that.’ There is an example of this in fasting. When you keep a fast, you control the Nafs; if you feel like drinking water, you don’t drink it, if you feel like eating something sweet, you don’t eat it, and if you feel like going to your wife, you don’t go to her - you stop your Nafs from doing thousands of things.
99.9% of men do this. Even sinful people like me do Amal upon this when we are fasting. Yes? This is the method, the practical method of controlling the Nafs through fasting, and in the same way, we have to control our Nafs in the rest of our life. If on one day, a man can control his Nafs for a few hours until the evening when he breaks his fast, then Allah ta’ala announces in the heavens ‘He has become My friend!’ This is after just a few hours of controlling the Nafs, so imagine if a person does Mujahidah and works hard on this throughout his life. We say ‘Oh, it’s too hard,’ but it can be done. Is it easy to keep a fast, to stay hungry and not drink water? Is it easy not to eat during the fast and to control yourself? No, it’s hard; there’s no taste and enjoyment in keeping the fast, is there? Yes? We have to give pain to the Nafs, to the base desires. We say ‘I should be a Wali of Allah because I do Dhikr and I am reciting the Qur’an’ and so on. You may do everything, but we need to look at how much our Nafs has been controlled. If we are doing Dhikr but the Nafs is not under control, then we are not attaining the objective of Dhikr. My Hadhrat said that if this is the case, your Dhikr is without benefit. If you do all these Tasbeehs and Dhikr, and after that, you still obey your Nafs, then your Dhikr is a waste. Tell me – have you not become lost in that playing field?
This doesn’t mean that Dhikr is not effective or that Dhikr is a minor action – no. Dhikr is not a minor action, and it is not insignificant, but you have not worked hard on your Dhikr. You need to work harder. Yes? You need to make more effort and work harder on that Amal. Right now, for example, your Nafs may be fat and overweight, in which case a little bit of Dhikr will not be enough to control it. If you say, for example, ‘I want to do an action from today – I want to keep the beard.’ So how long should you keep a beard? You should keep it the length that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam prescribed – one fist’s length is the length for the beard. Now the Nafs gives difficulties and obstacles, so a person thinks ‘How should I comply with this Hukm? How do I fulfil this instruction?’ This is Mujahidah, so you just have to say ‘No – the question of any less doesn’t arise.’ If you are doing Dhikr, praying Salah or doing other actions to the extent that gives you comfort and contentment rather than doing the right thing, then this is the Salah of the Nafs, the Tableegh of the Nafs, the Dhikr of the Nafs, the Tilawat of the Nafs. You have not yet done the Tilawat of a Wali of Allah with which Allah ta’ala will be pleased; you haven’t recited in the way Allah ta’ala will be pleased or done the Dhikr with which Allah will be pleased or done the action with which Allah will be pleased.
Why? Because the sign of the action with which Allah will be pleased is that you will shun the sins according to the instructions of Allah ta’ala. Then you will understand that Allah ta’ala has accepted the Dhikr that you have done and that you are getting the benefit of that Dhikr. If you are not getting the benefit, then you will have to increase the amount. For example, if you take a 200mg painkilling tablet and the pain is not going away, you will take 500mg. If it still doesn’t go away, then a tablet with 1000mg will be prescribed – the medicine will be given in increasing strength so that the sickness which is increasing can be controlled. If your Dhikr is not being effective, then ask the Sheikh for the cure and say ‘I can’t control this – what should I do?’
If I am committing a big sin and opposing the way of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, will I be at peace? Will your Salah give you peace? No – there is no question of your Salah giving you peace, because you are not living in the way of Allah but rather in the way of sin. You are following your Nafs and obeying your Nafs, and you are not following the way of Allah ta’ala’s Radha and keeping to His instructions in order to earn His Pleasure. You are obeying your Nafs with your Dhikr and are not doing it for Allah’s Radha. We need to do Dhikr that brings Allah ta’ala’s Pleasure, Salah that brings Allah ta’ala’s Pleasure, Tilawat that is in accordance with Allah ta’al’s Radha, and Ta’leem and Tableegh that brings Allah ta’ala’s Radha. Every action, whatever we do, should be high-level and high-class and in obedience to Allah ta’ala and His Radha, and in opposition to our Nafs, and then we will know that our Amal has been accepted. But if we are committing sins and then doing A’maal, then we are making our heart happy and our Nafs even fatter. And then people start praising you and saying ‘Oh, he prays Salah, and he is doing this and that and he is pious and doing the work of the Deen,’ and this makes the Nafs fatter, and that person thinks ‘I’m fine; I’m succeeding, and I don’t need to keep a full-length beard because I am accepted – I have become Kamil.’ No! If you want to weigh yourself and analyze yourself, use the weight-scale of the Sahri’ah and Sunnah. Weigh yourself on that and then reflect on whether you are successful or a failure. Do you understand what I am saying? This is the real crux of the matter that we need to understand.
So I was sharing with you this Hadith narrated by Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh concerning the statement of Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam – yes - and Allah ta’ala has stated that when you are in the service of a Wali of Allah, you get a great reward; and Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh is saying that this was a gift from Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam which he received with great happiness. And imagine how high was the rank of this Sahabi – he is a star for us – who is saying ‘I don’t want to hide and conceal this gift that I am getting; rather, I want to share it and bestow it upon the whole Ummah.’ This was their caring style. I was telling you about Khidmah, and how Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave this gift due to this Sahabi’s Khidmah, and also how a Wali of Allah who has crushed his desires gets sent into Jannah without accounting. May Allah ta’ala make us people like this. If we crush our desires today, then tomorrow we will go into Jannah without Hisab inshaAllah, so fight your Nafs and oppose your desires; control your desires.
So on this path, a person once saw another person and said to him ‘Assalamu alaykum,’ and the other replied ‘Wa alaykum salam.’ Then he said ‘Hadhrat, I am going into hellfire – do you recognise me?’ He replied ‘I have not recognised you yet,’ so he said ‘Shall I introduce myself to you?’ He said ‘Yes.’ Then he said ‘Do you remember that once, you were walking by a place, and I gave you a glass of water? I love you, so I gave you a glass of water. I served you and helped you, but I am being thrown into Jahannam.’ So that friend of Allah stood there and said ‘Ya Allah, You promised that You would accept intercession from Your friends, from Your Walis, and this man says that he helped me. I am going to Jannah, and it does not feel right to me that he served me with a glass of water in the Dunya and yet I leave him behind now.’ Allah then said ‘Go, My friend. How can I reject your request? You take him with you into Jannah.’ SubhanAllah. So this is what comes from serving a Wali of Allah – and this was just for giving a glass of water. Some people give their whole lives in Khadmah – I have seen this in the Khanqahs. SubhanAllah, they spend sixty, seventy or eighty years in the service of their Sheikh, and no way will you ever see their forehead frown in complaint, because they want Jannah and Allah’s Radha. They are not serving that man for the sake of the man; rather, Allah has given them the opportunity to take that path, saying ‘Serve that man – he is My Wali, so adopt and embrace this way.’ A glass of water can be so Ajeeb – Allah ta’ala forgives a person for serving it! This is the Maqam you can get for serving a Wali of Allah, for doing his Khidmah.
So that Sahabi who was doing Khidmah and serving the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam from the age of eight, will the gift he was given be a small one? SubhanAllah – you will see that throughout his life, Hadhrat Anas was unique amongst the Companions. He lived the longest - to the age of one hundred and twenty - and he had so many children that you lose count if you try to number them, SubhanAllah. Why? Because when he was given this Amal, he performed it. Now obviously, when the Companions of Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam received a Nasiha, they could not imagine that they would hear it and not practice it. That never happened – impossible. We should have that style of thinking today. The Nasihas come in Hadith, so when we ask an Alim or hear a Hadith from an Alim or any human being, then the Nasiha of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has reached us, and like the Sahaba-e-Kiram, we should Amal on that Hadith. Don’t leave that Amal that Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has prescribed for us. We hear Hadiths day and night in Bayans and in Ta’leem and in lectures, so at least do Amal on one Hadith. I am telling you one Hadith here, and Wallahi, if me and you do Amal on this one Hadith, the whole society of Islam will be realigned. The space between the heavens and the earth will be filled with Allah’s Rahmah, I swear by Allah, through this one Hadith, this Hadith about Salam. Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh gave us the example of this and demonstrated this in his life.
So what was said? What was the reward of this? He said ‘Anas, when you do this action, then listen – Allah’s Barakaat will descend upon you.’ SubhanAllah – Allahu Akbar! Where there is Barakaat, there will be no fighting; where there is Barakaat, there will be no quarrels; where there is Barakaat, the children will not be disobedient; where there is Barakaat, relationships do not break down; where there is Barakaat, the mother and father will be respected; where there is Barakaat, that family mends and joins ties, where there is Barakaat, there will be no Haram earnings, no earnings from interest, no Riba and no non-Shari’ah actions; there will Huffadh and Ulema in their midst and they will be practicing; there will be concern for others and Fikr; the mother and father will be at pains to teach their child Deen; where there is Barakaat, there will be no worldly love. Remember this – this is what Barakaat bring; this is the meaning of Barakaat. This guarantee is there that these things come when Allah ta’ala gives blessings due to serving.
Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said ‘Whoever does this Amal of giving Salam to his housefolk when he enters, the guarantee comes that all of his issues will evaporate.’ This is called Barakaat coming into the home, and Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that this would come from considering this one action as a Sunnah of entering the house. Do this as soon as you enter, first and foremost, when you see your family members, whoever is there or not there, whether they are present or not - even if there is nobody there! It is stated in the Hadith that you should do so even if you can’t see anyone, for there may be Muslim Jinns living with you, and also angels present. If you give Salam like this, the Barakaat will go to them and they will reply to you, SubhanAllah. Say SubhanAllah. They will answer you when you give Salam.
When you go to Salat-ul-Fajr in the morning, your wife may be sleeping after praying and your children may also be asleep, so you may think ‘Who am I giving Salam to?’ Don’t worry – the angels are waiting for you and Muslim Jinns are present in the home. Muslim Jinns are your friends in the home; they are there, and they stop bad things. Muslim Jinns are your friends in those homes where there is Qur’an and Hadith, where the Sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam is present, where all types of Adhkar are performed; they make such places their abode, thinking ‘This is a nice house – we will live here as well with him. He does Ibadah, and we can make Dua with him.’ Such Jinns will be included with you in your Duas and will bring Barakah to you. But where there are shaytani actions taking place, then shaytani Jinns come into the house, and they will make you fight and quarrel and argue, and diseases and issues will abound. People say ‘What is the cure for affliction by Jinn?’ The cure for this is the Sunnah and lifestyle of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam; live according to his lifestyle and bring this into your life. Yes?
Going to Amils and magicians will not bring a cure – the answer is far more straightforward. Where there are bad Jinns in the house, bring the Sunnah into that house, and I guarantee that within thirty of forty days, your house will be clean and pure. Why? Because the good Jinns will come and they will beat the bad Jinns, saying ‘Get out!’ But for this to happen, you and your home have to conform totally to the Sunnah. It is not good enough to do this or that good action, or to stop doing this or that bad action, or to go out for forty days, or to recite some Wazifah that will make the Jinns run away. No, they don’t run away due to these actions and recitations, rather, they make that house their permanent abode – they move into the house. If you move house or buy a house from someone who doesn’t have faith, there will be Jinnat there, so when you arrive, give Adhan in the house for seven days, and all those Jinnat will run away. SubhanAllah. But if you give the Adhan for seven days and they start committing sins and playing music, then the Jinns will come back.
So don’t turn your life into a drama and play out weird scenes in your life, my brothers. Just promise yourselves that you will live your lives according to the Sunnah and lifestyle of Nabi-al-Karim sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and then no Jinn will come and cause problems or have bad effects on the children. Of course, there are diseases and illnesses – there is no doubt about that. According to Allah’s Hikmah, someone may become sick so that Allah ta’ala can elevate their status through enduring that sickness or disease. But if we are following the Sunnah in the home, if a sickness comes, it is from Allah and has been given as an opportunity for you to progress and be promoted, according to Allah’s Hikmah, and for no other reason. So accept it and embrace it and say ‘Ya Allah, You have given me Barakah through this, because there are no Haram actions in my home and nothing bad is in the house because I am following the Sunnah of Nabi-al-Karim sallallahu alayhi wasallam.’ Say SubhanAllah!
So from that one Salam when entering, Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that Barakaat will come into your home, and we have seen what Barakaat were given to the home of this Sahabi in the Dunya. Look at the Hadith that mention the Barakaat that people saw in the house of Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh – the number of his children is described as Katheer as he had so many that you could not count them. He had wives and children and wealth, and his life was so long and full of Barakah – and he was a Sahabi, SubhanAllah, a great Sahabi; he was a unique Companion. He lived until he was one hundred and twenty years old, and he shared so much with the people during his life; what a great Sahabi – imagine his great rank. And whoever did his Ziyarah became a Tabi’i, so imagine how many people became Tabi’een due to having seen him. How many people would have seen him over that one hundred and twenty years and have become Tabi’een through him? And then from all of those, the Taba Tabi’een who met them also came from him. So much, so many, and all due to what? Because Nabi-al-Karim sallallahu alayhi wasallam told him that there would be Barakaat in his home due to this action.
So Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh is saying to us today ‘You do this action as well, and I guarantee that you too will benefit.’ This is why you also should do this action when you go home. First and foremost, what should you do? Say ‘Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.’ Will you do this, brothers? Yes! Then along with that, he gave a Nasiha, some advice; what great advice he gave! Shall I tell you this as well, so that I can also do Amal on this? Very few do Amal on this – it is very seldom that you see this practiced. I could say to you now ‘Put up your hands if you have given Salams when you entered your home today,’ but I won’t ask as the number will be very low. Very few will have done so. Yes, we may do so when we raise our heads as we enter our homes and see our wives and children, but I am talking about when we enter an empty home. Has anyone given Salam when entering an empty home? We just pray Salah and enter the home silently, but my brothers, I have told you that all of these A’maal that we do will obtain their Nooraniat when we live according to the Sunnah.
If you pray Salah, you are not doing a favour to anyone by praying Salah; your recitation of Qur’an has not conferred a favour upon anybody. Look at the benefit to ourselves of these actions of Salah and Tilawat – Allah ta’ala has done a favour to us by giving us the chance to do Ibadaat, but we don’t take the benefit of these actions. But when you do Amal on the Sunnah and also pray Salah, there will be Noor ‘ala Noor; the light will not stop, but rather, it shoots up to the heavens when you pray Salah according to the Sunnah. That Salah does not get held back in the world. But an Amal you do which is in opposition to the Sunnah, where you are trying to satisfy yourself, then that is an Amal of shaytan and Nafs. If you pray Salah in the form of sin, it will never succeed. If you cut your beard and pray Salah, how dare you think that there is any benefit? You have oppressed that Salah – we do injustice upon our own selves: {رَبَّنَا ظَلَمۡنَآ أَنفُسَنَا }. This is what is happening if we do Ibadah whilst at the same time we are committing sins. There is a saying in Punjabi that means ‘If I give you milk, how can you contaminate it by adding something?’ If you pray Salah and you are doing sins at the same time, remember that your Salah is going to Allah, so how can you present your Salah in that way? Allah ta’ala has given us a big favour by allowing us to prostrate to Him, so how can we stand up with that sin upon us at the same time?
Do Tawbah and repent; don’t play games with Allah. Don’t play games, for when Allah seizes, it is with firmness! Allah seizes with firmness, so don’t commit sins. Do Astaghfar and then pray Salah – don’t come with a sin. Do Astaghfar; first recite Astaghfar when you leave, saying ‘Oh Allah, forgive my sins, for I am departing to go to Your home.’ Don’t recite anything else, just Astaghfar, Astaghfar, Astaghfar, all the way from your home to the Masjid. Don’t go with your head held up high, but rather, lower your head and say ‘Oh Allah, I am a severe sinner! Oh Allah, my Sujood and my Salah will be wasted due to my sins, so I ask forgiveness from You!’ Keep doing Astaghfar when you are going to Salah, and say ‘Oh Allah, I have done this sin and that sin – I have sinned deliberately.’ Without Astaghfar, how can you sin deliberately and then come and stand in the Court of Allah, in His home? Astaghfirullah ta’ala Rabbi min Kulli Dhanbi – what a Deen we are practicing today! Look at the condition we have made for ourselves. What are we doing? When you pray Salah, do Katheer Astaghfar and then enter the Masjid humbly with head lowered and engage yourself in Dhikr, in Qalbi Dhikr. When Salah is coming, do Qalbi Dhikr before the Salah starts – a big time is coming, so ask Allah for forgiveness and admit your shortcomings. There should be no external sins upon you, for this is like joking with Allah and coming with hypocrisy, if we commit a physical sin and then stand in front of Allah. We pray { ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٲطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيم}, yet our whole path to Salah has been full of sins; and then we pray {غَيۡرِ ٱلۡمَغۡضُوبِ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ }, saying ‘Oh Allah, we don’t want the ways of those who are Magdhoob and in Dhalalah,’ and yet from top to bottom, we are the same as them, in practical terms. We stand there and then do Sujood, and then we say ‘I have just prayed Salah,’ and then we wipe our hands upon our faces. This is Munafiqat, it is hypocrisy, and Allah is unhappy with such actions. Allah has given us a chance, so be as clean and pure as possible when coming to the Court of Allah. This is why our Ibadaat do not take effect.
What a great statement has been made, SubhanAllah, about a human being who prays one Salah – a Hadith has come to my mind. One noble Companion came and said ‘Oh Prophet of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, my sins, my sins! I am finished, I am destroyed! I have done this sin and that sin.’ If a person does true Tawbah, then the sin pinches him, but we don’t know what Tawbah is. This person had accepted that he had sinned, and he was shaking and trembling, saying ‘What can I do? I am destroyed, I am finished – I am going to hellfire!’ He was shrieking and screaming at the time that Salah was due. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said to him ‘Sit down, sit down.’ He made him sit down, and then he prayed Salah. After Salah, he sat down quietly, and the first thing that Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said was ‘Where is that man who was saying ‘My sins, my sins’?’ The man said ‘Ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, it is me. I am here.’ Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said to him ‘All your sins are forgiven!’ Say SubhanAllah. He said ‘Oh Prophet of Allah, are they totally forgiven?’ He replied ‘Before Salah you were something else, but now that you have prayed Salah, all your sins have been forgiven due to that Salah.’ This is Salah! This is what Salah is – just one Salah is so valuable that it can annihilate all sins. The sins are pulled up by the roots and are forgiven.
So a second Nasiha was given to Hadhrat Anas radhiAllahu anh alongside the encouragement to give Salam to the housefolk. Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said ‘Oh Anas, when you are heading towards your home, whether coming from the Masjid or anywhere else, do you meet Muslims along the way? You meet Muslims, don’t you, this Sahabi and that Sahabi – you will come across somebody along the way, walking past or whatever, outside the Masjid and so on.’ We meet people, don’t we, but what is our action? Nothing. We are more like animals than the animals; as we walk to the Masjid, we just put our noses into the air and off we go, but here is a Hukm, an instruction: ‘When you are coming and you meet a Muslim on the way, then give Salam to him.’ SubhanAllah! What is the benefit? What is the reward? There is such a great Thawab for this action that a person cannot imagine. Why? Because Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has given this gift to his Khadim, to his servant, and it is not a minor gift or a small present. This is a gift, not to a normal Companion, but to his special Khadim, and through his generosity, he shared and delivered that to us. After hearing this Hadith, you should purposely try to meet people along the way.
So when you meet a Muslim on the way, then give Salam to him. What reward will you get? SubhanAllah – the reward is so great that it gives you both the Deen and the Dunya. What reward is that? It is stated that you will feel the taste of Iman through this action - the Hilawat of Iman will be tasted. What is Hilawat? Do you eat Halwa? You do eat Halwa sometimes, don’t you? Is it bitter, or is it sweet? Will Halwa be sweet or bitter? If something is bitter, would you call it Halwa? No – it could not be defined as Halwa. If something is sweet, you will say that it is like Halwa. In Arabic, whatever is sweet is called Halwa. Yes? So its effect is sweetness – do you understand what I am saying? So you will attain the sweet taste of Iman through this practice, SubhanAllah. You will enjoy this small Tafsir of this point: your Iman will become so nice and complete that any Hukm that comes to you from Allah and His Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam will be experienced as being as sweet as Halwa. Nobody passes opportunities to eat Halwa. If it were announced right now that a pot of Halwa was at the back, you would feel compelled to turn and look, and I would have to feed it to you before we could do any Dhikr! Halwa is like this – will the Sufis who are sat here leave it? Of course not!
So Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave this example, saying that Hilawat will come into your Iman. In other words, when Allah’s Hukm to keep the beard comes, there will be so much sweetness in you that you will run toward that action and deed. When Allah’s Hukm comes to pray Salah, you will run to that action, and you will pray Salah. Whatever Hukm comes, it will seem so sweet and enjoyable and beautiful to you, SubhanAllah, such that you will not be able to sleep until you have done that action. You will go home, and it will be as if a neighbour has sent round some tasty Halwa with butter melting on top, and I don’t know what people out into Halwa, but the taste of all the ingredients will be there - and it will be hot as well. If you have prayed Salah and done Dhikr and gone home, and there you find that melting Halwa, if someone says ‘Don’t eat it now – have it in the morning,’ I don’t think any Mujahid will be able to stop himself. You will say ‘I will speak to the Halwa first now, and then will address it again in the morning!’ Would anyone leave that Halwa until the morning? Nobody would do so.
In the same way, when Allah’s Hukm comes, there should be such sweetness and enjoyment in Iman that first and foremost, a person will do that Amal. When the Adhan comes at Fajr time, he will say ‘Begone with you, oh sleep! I cannot get the taste I get in my Salah from sleep.’ Say SubhanAllah. Why would the noble Companions do Ibadaat all night long? Because they had the taste and the enjoyment of Halwa in their Iman, so all night long, they would do Tilawat of Qur’an and Salah. Why can’t we do this? Because there is no taste or sweetness in our Iman – if there was Halwa, there would be no tossing and turning. Every action and Hukm of Allah and His Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam is bitter for us; it is a bitter pill. Is this not the case? This is an Ajeeb Tafsir – this is the Tafsir of the Faqir; this is the Tafsir of the humble servant.
The reason we are like this is because there is no sweetness or taste in our Iman. If taste and sweetness come into Iman, then people do not stop doing A’maal. They don’t wait when encouraged to do Tawbah, saying ‘Oh, I will do Tawbah some other time.’ If you say ‘Pray Salah,’ they won’t say ‘Oh, I will start from tomorrow. I will start from Jumu’ah.’ If you say ‘Do this action,’ they won’t say ‘I will start this in a few days’ time.’ How about Dhikr? ‘Oh no, not now.’ No – don’t delay! For a Mu’min, there is so much sweetness in the action of Dhikr that the great Moulana Rumi rahmatullah alayh, that great poet of the Persian language, said ‘When I recite the Name of Allah, then every atom and particle within me starts to melt.’ Will a person who knows that Dhikr is being hosted at Zakariyya Masjid leave that Majlis of Dhikr of Allah? Will he have to be invited? But we don’t have Hilawat and the taste of sweetness in our Iman; we don’t have it.
We don’t do that action gives us that taste of Iman. What Amal? Say SubhanAllah. Whenever you meet a Muslim along the way, greet him with Salam with the Niyyah of this Hadith. Don’t do so thinking ‘He is my friend,’ or ‘I want to borrow money from him,’ or ‘I want to take from him so I will make friends with him,’ or ‘I will arrange a marriage through him,’ or ‘If I make friends with this man, I will be able to do this and that as a result’ – there is no Lillah in that; that is Dunya. No – do so according to the Hadith of Allah’s Rasool sallallahu alayhi wasallam, who said that the taste of Iman will come from this action. So greet every Muslim, whether an enemy or a friend. Without any differentiation, greet any Muslim who comes in front of you and who you meet on the way. Even if you have clashed with him and don’t like him, don’t let this stop you. Say to yourself ‘Come, Allah ta’ala has sent this man to me as a test, so I will give Salam. Let’s see if he replies or not.’ Say SubhanAllah.
Don’t worry about whether he will answer you or respond to the Salam – this thinking will defeat you. Think ‘Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has instructed me to do this, and although he is my enemy, he is the first man I have come across, so I will say Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh to him.’ Don’t wait to see if he replies to you or not – that is a matter of his destiny and fortune. You have obtained the reward, regardless; you will have double, even – one for the test that you passed and the other for the Salam. If you meet a friend, it is a normal thing to give Salams, but you had a test on top of that and have succeeded in that test by giving Salams to a person who is against you. Thus, you get double reward and double taste of Iman – one for the Salam, and one for opposing your Nafs and disregarding that he doesn’t like you.
Do you understand what this Faqir is saying? I don’t understand how to give lectures, so I am just sharing a few points with you. If you don’t understand now, then the recording of the Bayan will soon be available, so listen to it again, and repeat it after that as well. Rather than listening and watching pointless things here and there, run after these Bayans, for the more you listen to them, the more Hilawat will come into your Iman. Do you understand now what the meaning of Hilawat is? Yes? Now that I have described what Hilawat is to you, is there just one meaning or are there two? Look at the definition that I have given to you. This is the definition of the Faqir – this is the style in which a Faqir speaks.
So brothers, alongside this, Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has given another unique and Ajeeb reward. Imagine the reward – this is the reward for a Khadim, and this has come into our Kismet. He said that you will get sweetness of Iman and also another point on top of that. This is very valuable indeed, my brothers. Imagine you have just got married and after a week, your wife, who is very beautiful and attractive, says ‘Go and get some milk and bread from the corner shop.’ These things happen just like I am describing now, don’t they? So if you are in this country, and it is a hot day and have left home to get bread, leaving your wife who you have married only recently, while you are going to the shop, there are people wearing very little clothing – you know what Libas people wear here when it is hot weather – and although you have just been married for one week, your glance strays and arrows pierce you as you walk along, due to the sins that you commit at that time. This is because the Nafs is not in control – and this person has just got married.
So what a big sin is this evil glance! You cannot imagine how great a sin the evil glance is, and this is such a common sin today, a sin committed as commonly and casually as sucking on a mango. This is sin is so common and easy to commit today, because whether looking on the phone or wherever, images of women are with us every second, and yet this is such a big sin; it is a massive sin and there is such a terrible punishment for this in the Hereafter that a person will say ‘It would have better if I had been blind for my whole life rather than making this mistake of looking at women like this, with an evil glance.’
Now look at the Hadith. You come, Moulana sahib comes, Sufi sahib comes, Hadhrat Sahib comes – all these people come, but nobody knows all the sins that a person has committed. While you are on the path on your way, you meet a man and he starts to speak to you and falls into backbiting, or you lie to him, or you meet someone and say Salam and walk together for a few footsteps, and right away, Gheebat statements start coming. I am telling you the reality here. ‘Oh, look at that person. What do you know about that person?’ They start backbiting this person and that person, because shaytan is with you. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam stated ‘Oh Anas, when you leave your home and give Salam to any Muslim that you meet, the next reward that you will get is that all the sins you have committed, whether knowingly or unknowingly, will be forgiven by Allah subhana wa ta'ala.’ SubhanAllah! We are severely in need of this because we are living in the era of Fitnah. As in the examples I have given to you, a person definitely commits sins. He lies, he backbites, he looks with evil glances. There are thousands of ways to commit sins, a very long list, in your thinking and so on, but Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that if you give Salam, you will get the reward that the sins you committed on the way will all be forgiven.
Could you attain anything more than this from this Majlis of Dhikr? This is such a great reward that Allah ta’ala has bestowed upon us through this Hadith that has come to us. It came to my mind as I was thinking ‘What should I share and discuss today?’ Allah ta’ala has given a discussion such that all of you will enjoy it. Really, five minutes before I was thinking ‘What shall I discuss with my friends that will benefit me as well?’ Alhamdulillah, due to your Barakah, through this Hadith, Allah ta’ala instilled such a point into my mind that I have benefitted a lot, alhamdulillah. All the paths have opened for us – how Allah ta’ala’s Mercy and Blessings have come to us due to the Sadqah of this Majlis.
So definitely, attend those gatherings where there is Dhikr, where there is a Majlis of Dhikr, because Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has promised that a person who attends such a gathering will not leave empty-handed. If a person does Amal on this, has he left empty-handed? Tell me. If a person does Amal on this Hadith, will he be empty-handed? Those people who have heard this who have no A’maal will realise that this is necessary. They will think ‘I commit sins and I pray Salah,’ and after today, they will surely do Tawbah because they don’t want to waste their deeds. A person will say ‘Oh, I won’t do this bad action from today. I will keep my beard long and I won’t lie, and I won’t backbite, otherwise my Salah is being wasted and my Sujood is being wasted and I am doing everything according to my Nafs. Now I have heard the Hukm of Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam.’ This is all Allah’s Karam and generosity upon us.
So whatever we have heard via Allah’s Nabi Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, if these words have reached us and if Allah’s Karam and grace have reached us, then come, let us promise in our hearts that after today, the sins that we have committed – say it loudly – ‘After today, inshaAllah we will not repeat the sins that we have committed previously.’ That’s it – end of story. Even if we haven’t said it out loud, the sins have been eliminated by Allah. This is called Tawbah, and do you know what reply Allah ta’ala will give? ‘Today, you have promised to Me that you won’t do this sin again, so listen – My promise is also here. Any individual who listens to My order and to the order of My Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam and who does Tawbah, then I announce in the heavens that I have made that person My friend!’
SubhanAllah – whether you believe this or not, this announcement certainly comes from Allah to whoever has made this promise and has said ‘Oh Allah, due to You, I have eliminated this sin from my life. This point has come into my heart today and I appreciate this Hadith of Your Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam and I have realised the great reward for greeting whoever I meet with Salam.’ Whoever has committed a sin, admit it and remove it from your heart right now, whether it is wrongful, evil glances or lying or whatever, and say ‘Oh Allah, I repent right now and I will try my best not to commit this sin again.’ Do we make this promise, my brothers?
This is the Majlis of Dhikr, and you cannot leave empty-handed! May Allah ta’ala give us the Tawfeeq to implement this. Ameen. Come, let us now do Dhikr of Allah for a short while.
