Three Deeds That Take You to Jannah
Qutb ul-Aqtab, Hadhrat Rashid Ahmad Gangohi rahmatullah alayh stated that Allah subhana wa ta'ala will not put that tongue which is busy in the remembrance of Allah subhana wa ta'ala into Jahannam. This is also confirmed in a Hadith which states that death should come to a person while his or her tongue is busy with the Dhikr of Allah. So due to doing Dhikr, Allah ta’ala will state ‘This tongue was a Dhakir, so I will not put it into the fire of Hell.’ Now it is obvious that the heart is the king of the body, for it is apparent that the whole body is controlled by the heart, and this too is stated in Hadith. So if Allah will not put a tongue into hell due to doing Dhikr, then as for the human being whose heart is a Dhakir, Allah ta’ala will save his whole body from the fire of hell.
In the Qur’an, it is stated {وَٱذۡڪُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ ڪَثِيرً۬ا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ} and the Mufassireen have explained what is meant here by Dhikr Katheera, abundant Dhikr. What is the definition of abundant Dhikr? It means those people who remember Allah from their hearts. And the Mufassireen also explain what is meant by Falah here – success. In respect of the world, if a person attains success in the world, he becomes very happy. If someone is looking for something, a house for example, and though he is a millionaire, he can’t acquire the house he wants, then if you tell that person that the house he has wanted has come onto the market, will he not be happy? There will be no limit to his happiness. Many things are linked to the Dunya, like a person’s job, so when you tell a person that he has got a job he wanted, he is extremely happy at that time – you can imagine this sort of happiness. So what about the real happiness, the happiness that Allah ta’ala brings with Falah? What will that happiness be like? Think how a person will feel when he gets the news that he has attained that success.
Imagine the situation on the Day of Judgement – you will have heard about the scene at that time which Allah ta’ala has mentioned in the Qur’an. When Hadhrat Israfeel alayhi salam blows the Trumpet for the first time, this whole world will disappear in an instant. No one will remain alive. The mountains will evaporate, and there will be fire in the oceans and seas when Qiyamah comes. A scenario that we see today in the world is when bombs explode on the earth - we have seen the effect that this has. But that is nothing compared to Judgement Day, when every situation around us will come to an end. Everything that has life will die. Birds, insects, animals – all will be extinguished when the first Trumpet is sounded. And then Qiyamah will be established when the Trumpet is blown for a second time, and no one knows how long after the first that will be. Allah knows best. After that second blowing of the Trumpet, it is mentioned in various places that the earth will then boil from within, and then all human beings who have ever lived from the beginning of time, wherever they lived and died, will be thrown out by the earth. They will come out of the earth, and the earth will be stretched and pulled like rubber. The Mufassireen have said that the earth will be stretched so much due the sheer number of people upon it on the Day of Judgement. Imagine how many people are on the earth now, and even today it seems that the earth cannot cope with them all – so the earth will be seriously stretched on that Day.
This is not a story; the Qur’an is telling us this true fact. And we are Muslims by virtue of having certainty about these things – believing in these facts is what Iman is! Whoever does not believe in these facts does not have Iman. How can a person say he is a Muslim if he doubts these things? Belief in these facts is a proof of Iman – we believe in Qiyamah, we believe in the angels, we believe in whatever Allah has mentioned in the Qur’an. We believe these facts - the possibility of doubting these facts does not even arise. The Qur’an is telling us about confirmed matters. When will this occur? It will happen in the blink of an eye.
The Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that Qiyamah was close in his day and age, and today we see that all the signs of Qiyamah are present. Are there any signs of Qiyamah that have not become evident in front of our eyes? We can see the Fitnah of Dajjal, and how near we are to the time of Imam Mehdi alayhi salam. The signs are all around you wherever you look – see what is happening in the Middle East, in this country and that country, here and there. These days, after every hour, the world changes again – we see this daily. Every hour that passes, a new piece of news arrives – the sickness spreads here, and then this sickness becomes as nothing, for a more serious version of the sickness breaks out. And then more news comes, that this new version cannot be prevented, that the vaccine won’t work on the new disease. Don’t we hear this in the news, how the situation is constantly changing? But Allah ta’ala is controlling the whole system – it is all under Allah’s control. So we must have Yaqeen, and only by having Yaqeen can a person be a Mu’min. If we don’t have Yaqeen in these matters, if we have doubts and shaytani Waswasah, then we need to reject them and find a cure to this so that our Iman is not wasted.
This is the reality, and if we look again at the conditions that will surrounding us on Qiyamah, the earth will be stretched like rubber and there will be a darkness so intense that no comparison can be made to it, and there will be such intense heat that no comparison can be made to it. Such darkness and heat – Allah forgive, Allah forgive! How long will this go on? No way of knowing. There will be no light, and we will all be alive at that time, standing there drowning in our sweat. These are the words of the Qur’an that have been told to us. That is why we read the Qur’an, isn’t it? Don’t we read the Qur’an for this? The Qur’an is our heart, it is our body – it is our everything. There is no success for us without the Qur’an, alhamdulillah. The Qur’an says ‘Read me and practice on me!’ That is the invitation of the Qur’an; that is the call. Read one verse and contemplate upon it, think about it, worry over it, otherwise the verse itself will be sad and say ‘Didn’t you ever think about me? Did you just recite me like a parrot, like an animal? Did you recite me without knowing what I was saying to you?’
Look, the Qur’an was given to the Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam. The Qur’an is the head of the Kitabs and its every word brings reward. If you touch it - reward; if you kiss it - reward; if you keep it at home, there is Barakah; when you look at the Qur’an, there is Barakah – imagine! What a great Kitab! And what a great, great honour it is that Allah ta’ala has put the Qur’an in our hearts and has allowed us to recite it with our tongues and memorized it in our hearts. Is this not the case? But Allah says ‘The objective is not this!’ All this is not the objective of the Qur’an. There is but one objective – what is that objective? Amal! Practice! The Hafidh who practices the Qur’an will be higher in rank, and he will reach the destination. As he recites, the verses will say ‘Keep on ascending, keep on ascending.’ There are so many Fadhail in the Qur’an, so many blessings, so many rewards, so many mercies, but aside from all of that, Allah ta’ala says that there is only one objective of the Qur’an.
If you have done Amal on the Qur’an, then you will attain all those blessings – Noor ‘ala-n-Noor, light upon light. The mother and father of that person will be given a crown and an illumination like that of the moon and the sun. The parents of that Hafidh will have crowns upon their heads, and a person cannot imagine the intensity of that light. But what is the condition? The necessary condition is one, that he didn’t joke with the Qur’an or challenge the Qur’an, and he didn’t memorise the Qur’an for some other objective. There was one objective for him, and what was it?
{ذَٲلِكَ ٱلۡڪِتَـٰبُ لَا رَيۡبَ‌ۛ فِيهِ‌ۛ هُدً۬ى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ}
What does Allah ta’ala say at the beginning of the Qur’an? What is this Qur’an? There is no need to doubt this Qur’an, and the one who doubts can never succeed. {هُدً۬ى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ } And whoever wants to be a Muttaqi in the world today, whoever wants to obtain Taqwa, whoever wants Paradise - {هُدً۬ى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ } – how will he be prepared for this? The Qur’an will prepare that person, the Amal of the Qur’an will prepare him. Whoever follows the Qur’an in practical terms, only he will be successful – the Qur’an has said this right at the beginning. Is this not the case? The Qur’an is telling us, so how can you have Waswasah about the Qur’an?
But this will be the condition of the people, and at that time on Qiyamah, there will be discord and disarray, darkness and severity. Just imagine if, right now, the light went off here, or if we were surrounded by fire – may Allah ta’ala not allow this. The whole world will be like that then. I am just giving you an example. If we were suddenly plunged into darkness, how would we feel? How long could we survive an intense, ongoing darkness? If, within a minute or a second, this condition around us were changed into one of humidity, darkness and heat, what then? This is not impossible, for this is what happens when a building is on fire, isn’t it? What is the situation of people trapped in such a fire? Eventually, many of them will die in the darkness due to the fire in the building. On Qiyamah, however, in that most severe heat, Allah says that there will be no death. There will be no death, rather life beyond life will be the state of the people. Imagine that situation. This will happen to me, to you, to all of us of sitting here now; we will all pass through these phases.
I remember the sigh of my Hadhrat Sahib - the ‘Aah’ of the Wali of Allah is something else. When he would speak of these matters, a sigh would come out and tears would fall from his eyes and he would say in Siraiqui, his dialect ‘Oh Babu, do you know what will happen? Do you know what the phases of the life to come are? Do you know what conditions will surround us in those phases when they arrive? Don’t you know?’ He knew because he had read the Qur’an and so he knew these facts.
So let us now imagine what the Qur’an tells us. {وَٱذۡڪُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ ڪَثِيرً۬ا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ} Imagine you are stood in that condition in the darkness. Now take an example from here, like a person who doesn’t have a job and then he hears that he has got a job - he becomes so happy and buys boxes of sweets to celebrate; and if he has been looking for a partner and he receives the good news that a suitable match has accepted him, he becomes so happy; or if he succeeds in buying a house, he becomes so happy that he can’t sleep due to his happiness, and he is so grateful to Allah and does Shukr for this Ni’mah. Now imagine that you are standing in the severity of the Day of Qiyamah and you hear Allah ta’ala giving you the good news ‘Go - I have forgiven you!’ Imagine! Can you imagine the effect of that good news and the emotions and the feelings that will come at that time? If you are drowning in the ocean, and you are sinking and you cannot hold your breath any longer, and then suddenly something brings you up to the surface, imagine the relief! But nothing can compare to the severity of the conditions on Qiyamah, with its darkness and heat, so imagine if one of us receives the announcement from Allah ‘Go- I have forgiven you!’ SubhanAllah. Allah mentions these points in the Qur’an.
For that person, the Qur’an has said {وَٱذۡڪُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ ڪَثِيرً۬ا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ} Keep your heart always occupied in the remembrance of Allah, and then Allah ta’ala will announce to you in that darkness ‘Due to that Dhikr, I have forgiven you!’ SubhanAllah. This is what Hadhrat Gangohi sahib rahmatullah alayhi wa qaddasAllahu sirrah is saying. He is saying that the tongue which does Dhikr of Allah will not go into Jahannam but will be forgiven - and that tongue is just one part of your body. So he is saying imagine a heart which is a Dhakir, whose beating sustains the whole body and which is the chief of the body, then not only that heart will be forgiven but it will save the whole body from the fire of hell. SubhanAllah! That is why it is stated that it is such a great piece of news from Allah ta’ala that we can do Qalbi Dhikr, Dhikr of the heart, and that the heart can be attached to Allah, for this brings the good news of relief from that darkness today!
But who feels the lack of this in their lives? We have love of the world and have been so overwhelmed by the Dunya that we don’t understand about the Hereafter. Think, think! Allah ta’ala has given us everything. He has given us health and Aql and the comforts of life - all this is from Allah, but we do not value and appreciate these things. If it was not so important, why would this message from the Qur’an al-Hakim have continued to come from that time until now? Day by day, the illumination increases, because the Qur’an will be intact until the Day of Judgement. Every day this light is shining out – you can see this. From its revelation until the Qiyamah, that light and illumination of the Qur’an will continue to spread as people read it. Today, you can sit down and the read the Qur’an on your phones. These phones were not invented to read Qur’an with, but people of Iman have embedded the Qur’an into the phones as well. See how many methods Allah ta’ala uses to spread the Qur’an, because Allah ta’ala says that forgiveness and salvation will be attained through the Qur’an.
How can the Dhikr of Allah end, if it is Dhikr which will give salvation to people on the Day of Judgement? Look how Dhikr of Allah thrives! People used to have to go far and wide to attend a gathering of Dhikr – and I am talking about during my life. Fifty or sixty years ago, I used to travel thousands of miles to visit my Hadhrat Sahib’s Khanqah. Even if I was ill, I would travel to do Dhikr of Allah in my Sheikh’s Khanqah. This was the practice of my life that I, a normal person, am sharing with you; but imagine the massive sacrifices that the true Walis of Allah made just to go to learn the Name of Allah. I am talking to you about myself, the practical example of an incapable person. I didn’t just sit down at home and say ‘I am going to do Qalbi Dhikr.’ You have to give things up! You acquire everything through effort – you have to make effort to achieve anything. But as time is passing, the drought is spreading. Qiyamah is close – you can see the conditions and the Fitnahs that have come, for you cannot travel by plane and so on. And more things will happen! A person will get trapped where he is, unable to travel. These words sound strange, but this was said forty years ago and now look – it is happening! Borders will be closed, so wherever you are at that time, you will be stuck – remember this. Such strange things are happening as time passes, so be careful when travelling. You might feel things are normal, but normality will not return just like that. When Allah ta’ala comes into the equation, then ‘normality’ ends.
And there is a drought now, in this day and age. You will not see any Wali of Allah nor any Dervaish nor anyone to make Dua. There is discord all around. Why? Because Allah ta’ala says ‘I take everything away when people do not value My Ni’mahs. When people do not value the good things that I give, then I take My Walis away. You won’t find them – look for them!’ But this is Dhikr of Allah and it is going to continue - see how Allah ta’ala has arranged matters. Look where I am speaking from; look where the Dhikr is coming from. I used to go thousands of miles to that village of Gadai Sharif, a place that nobody had heard of around the world. But now, Gadai Sharif, the village of my Hadhrat, is known to people in all corners of the world. In this country alone, four Khanqahs have been established on Hadhrat Sahib’s name, alhamdulillah. Who knew about Gadai Sharif before? And now there are four Khanqahs in this country, and everyone is sat there doing Dhikr of Allah, alhamdulillah.
This is reality. When something is genuine, when it is based upon truth and Haq, then it is not human beings that spread that path. It is not spread through announcements or adverts – nothing of the kind is needed. Rather, Allah ta’ala is the One who spreads it, and it will continue to spread. This flame will not be put out or extinguished at all. How can you extinguish such a flame? Whether or not you make announcements, whether or not you tell people, whether you explain to somebody or not, whether he understands or not, can anyone stop the message of the Qur’an? Can anybody wipe out the message of the Qur’an? Can anybody stand against the Qur’an? How many hearts can you remove the Qur’an from? Tell me. Can you stop Dhikr of Allah? How can you stop Dhikr of Allah? How could it be stopped? In the same way that you can read the Qur’an on the phone, look at this system of Dhikr! People do not have to travel across the Dunya, rather, Dhikr is delivered by Allah ta’ala to people. Gadai Sharif has arrived in all four corners of the world even though Hadhrat Sahib did not come out of his Hujrah.
Someone once asked Hadhrat to travel - and I will tell you the reply in my dialect now. Listen to my dialect – and this is my dialect because it is my Sheikh’s dialect, and hence it is my spiritual language. In my heart, I feel like I speak in his language. So some Dervaish said to him ‘Sain, look how the Dunya has progressed and people have spread out – you should go abroad as well to give Faidh to the people of the world. Distribute your Faidh. You are such a great personality, but you are sat in this corner here with just goats and chickens running around. You are such a great Sheikh that the stones start doing Dhikr when you look at them! So go, travel around the world and give out that Faidh.’ But Hadhrat Sahib replied with a light smile, saying ‘Babu, Allah ta’ala has freed me from this duty – He has let me off.’ SubhanAllah! He said ‘Allah ta’ala has let me off because he knows how little strength I have, so I do not have to go. But Allah ta’ala will deliver a man to me who will deliver this message to the world.’ SubhanAllah!
SubhanAllah – these are the words of the Walis of Allah, and Allah ta’ala has a great connection with His Friends. We don’t understand these points and what means when such words are uttered. We cannot grasp this. We think that a Wali of Allah just gives us this or that when we go to him, that we get a son or daughter due to visiting him. We are impressed if these things happen or if magic is evident or if Jinnat come out. We consider a person is a Wali of Allah if he fulfills our desires. But in reality, the Walis of Allah, the folk of the heart, the folk of Allah, they know that if you go to them with a dead heart, you will go away with a heart which is alive! That is the fact of the matter. That is the real attribute of the Wali of Allah – that is the definition and that is the sign. Allah ta’ala tells us in the Qur’an ‘Did I not bring the barren land to life? So do you think I cannot bring dead hearts to life just as I revive the barren earth? Look how I send water onto the barren earth by way of the clouds and the winds, and that water penetrates the earth and then fruits and vegetables emerge. So cannot I make your dead hearts alive? I moisten this wasted, barren heart, and just as the cool winds come, the cool light of the Wali of Allah is sent to that barren heart in the form of their words and their Ilham; and due to this, those hearts bear fruit and become like lush gardens.’
So Allah ta’ala has given this great Ni’mah of Dhikrullah to us human beings. Dhikran Katheera – abundant Dhikr – is the Dhikr of the heart; it is the illumination of the heart. But we are enjoying the life of the world and we have no desire for Dhikr. We have no passion, but people used to travel for thousands of miles to a place when they heard that there was a Wali of Allah there. And in intense heat, in a country in the Middle East in the lands of the Arabs, a Wali of Allah was once seen walking – I have heard this from our pious elders, so I am sharing this with you. Someone said to him ‘Hadhrat Sahib, the heat is intense at the moment, so where are you going? It is so hot, and here you are, carrying your belongings – why?’ He replied ‘Somebody told me that one hundred and twenty Rahmahs descend in the Majlis of a Wali of Allah, and that is where I am heading.’
Who is a Wali of Allah? It is a person who remembers Allah – that is the definition. So is this not a Majlis of a Wali of Allah too? What else is it? Do we expect it to be advertised with blaring horns and signs? The statement of the Hadith bears witness that those people who gather together for this reason, whether at home, in a Masjid, in a House of Allah, with the objective of remembering Allah are making a gathering of the Walis of Allah. Allah ta’ala says ‘As those people remember Me on the earth, I remember them among the angels in the heavens!’ - this is in Hadith. So this elder said ‘I have heard and I have read in Hadith that one hundred and twenty mercies descend upon the gathering of the Wali of Allah, in the Majlis of Allah’s remembrance. I don’t care about the heat and the difficulty involved in the effort that I am making – that doesn’t worry me at all. I am travelling there in order to get to where a Wali of Allah is conducting the Dhikr of Allah, because I want to be included in that assembly so that I can attain those Rahmahs as well.’
Do we have this passion today? Do we understand that Allah ta’ala’s Rahmahs are coming? We know about the benefits of the world and will run after them to acquire them without hesitation, but every day, morning and evening, these Rahmahs are available, aren’t they? Are these Rahmahs not present? What will happen tomorrow in that darkness? Is Allah ta’ala not giving us the means of preparing for the Day of Judgement? Does Allah ta’ala not want to save us? Allah ta’ala will say to us on the Day of Judgement ‘Today you are afraid and are running around like apes and monkeys, but yesterday on the earth, when My light was sparkling in the Majalis of Dhikr of Allah, were you sleeping at that time? Where were you then? You should have taken what I prepared for you yesterday, and then you could have enjoyed the fruits of that today!’ So will we do Dhikr, or not? If not, do you think Allah ta’ala will say ‘Ok, you came to England and there was no Majlis so it wasn’t necessary for you’? No! Will Allah say ‘Ok, fine – it wasn’t your fault because there was no Majlis anywhere’? Will Allah ta’ala say this? Are there gatherings here or not? Tell me. Is this announcement from my voice not being broadcast? Is it not going to London, or Yorkshire? It is going across the whole country! Where is it not available? Allah ta’ala will say ‘Why were you lazy and neglectful? I could have stopped this voice of Dhikr.’
Don’t look at the human being who is speaking, or where the voice is coming from; rather, look at Allah, the Rabb, who is spreading that voice and the announcement of Dhikr - SubhanAllah. We look at human beings and say ‘Is he this, or not? Does he have this status or not?’ What is your criteria? How can you judge a person and analyse him and judge him? Allah ta’ala can select and send His Rahmah through whoever He wants in order to spread His Deen. Why do you select from your criteria? People say ‘Oh, if he is this and is in this category, then I am not going to sit with him. If that’s who this man is, then I am not going to sit in his gathering. If he is a Pakistani, then I am not going to sit in his gathering; if he is a Gujerati, then I will not sit there; if he is a Pathan, then I will not sit there. If he is from my tribe and speaks with my dialect, then I will say he is a Wali of Allah and I will sit with him.’ This is our basis, and this is our criteria. Allah ta’ala says that a Majlis should have different families and different races and different groups of people who come – SubhanAllah. In such a Majlis, it does not matter what colour or creed you come with – there is no differentiation. Allah says ‘Only one language runs, and that is the language of Muhammad al-Arabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam – that is what counts in the gathering of My Dhikr.’
So don’t look and think ‘Who are you? Who is hosting the Dhikr?’ Allah says ‘Whoever I select is up to Me.’ He could be English or Irish or German or Pakistani or Gujerati – it doesn’t matter. Allah says ‘This is My selection, and if you follow your selection, then shaytan will work alongside you’ And then people will start to think like shaytan: ‘Oh, I am better than him. Why should I do Sajdah to Adam when he is made of soil and I am made of fire?’ So don’t pick and choose, and don’t challenge Allah’s selection. Don’t look at the language or the voice, rather, recognize that it is Allah who is spreading His Dhikr. We have no business asking ‘Who is this person? Where is he from? What link does he have and what status is he?’ No. When Allah selects someone for a reason, then we don’t need to know the Hikmah behind the selection; rather, we need to look at the message and the essence of the message – what is he saying that we should do, and what is he saying that we should not do. Say SubhanAllah.
So the pious elder was walking in the heat, saying ‘There are one hundred and twenty Rahmahs coming down, and if Allah ta’ala asks me tomorrow, what will I say?’ How does all this happen? Does Allah ta’ala create a system, or do we set this up? Allah ta’ala says ‘I send the thirsty person to the well.’ Imagine – this all happens for a reason. When a person arrives at the well, he should make the intention not to leave the well before he has quenched his thirst. That is a person who is grateful; he has arrived at the well and he makes the intention not to leave before he has quenched his thirst. So my brothers, we need to do the same. Imagine – one hundred and twenty of Allah’s Rahmahs descend.
I will present and share with you a statement of Hadhrat Thanwi sahib rahmatullah alayh – and these are all words of the pious elders, not points that I am making up. He said that there are three Amal, three deeds, that will guarantee a person Paradise if he practices upon them. Hadhrat Thanwi sahib rahmatullah alayh spoke about three practices. If a human being does these three actions, will he get Paradise or not? The first action that he mentioned - and the Qur’an tells us this and Hadhrat Gangohi sahib rahmatullah alayh also tells us this – is what? The first action mentioned is to find and acquire the company of a Wali of Allah with the sole Niyyah that you should intend thereby to get forgiveness on the Day of Judgement. This is the first step to prepare for that destination. And who is telling us this? He is such a great Wali of Allah, the Mujaddid of Tasawwuf and Tariqa.
He said that the first action is to find the company and establish a connection with a Friend of Allah. Acquire Sohbah, company, and not just to shake his hand, not for a superficial connection, no. You should have Aqeedah in him, and also love for him, and also adherence to his instructions, and Fanayyat. It is not enough just to sit with him for a few hours and go to Dhikr now and then in the morning – no, no. There must be a real connection, and there are conditions for everything, like the condition of the Qur’an is to do Amal. If you want to benefit from the company of the Wali of Allah, you should have these three qualities – then you have Rabta-e-Sheikh, a proper connection with the Sheikh. Revise your lesson now – I also want to revise this. I should never think ‘Oh Hadhrat Sahib has gone, so I have no need for my Sheikh.’ Rather, I need to have the same connection with my teacher today, the same Aqeedah with my teacher, the same love for him, the same obedience to him and the same Khidmah to him; I need to have the same service to my teacher today. So what has changed? Through a person’s connection to his Hadhrat Sahib, the Faidh and blessings of his Sheikh always flow to the student – remember this. The situation for me is that now I do Esal-e-Thawab, and I will continue to ask Allah for his forgiveness, and thus his love continues to reach me.
The connection never ends, never. The direction does changes, but the essential thing is to maintain the connection with the Sheikh. The connection doesn’t just mean that you go there and sit down and take part in the Dhikr – that is not the connection. Connection comes when you have conviction in the Sheikh, when there is love in your heart for the Sheikh, when there is obedience to the Sheikh so that you practice whatever he teaches you and you follow his example – and all of this is done for the sake of Allah. And if a Sheikh looks at the worldly attributes of the students, looking for those who have more money, who give him more and serve him more, then he is not a Sheikh – he is a thief. That person is a thief, not a Pir. The true Sheikh teaches Bi-idhni’llah; he looks at who wants to progress and who has the necessary qualities, not at relatives or blood relations, no. Bi-idhni’llah – the teacher follows the Hukm of Allah. Allah may tell him in a dream to give a person promotion and progression because he has the necessary qualities and has strong Aqeedah with the teacher; he has come for the sake of Allah. He has come with total Aqeedah, with the intention to attain Faidh from his Sheikh and depart with that Faidh, believing that his Sheikh will take him to his destination. He should have strong conviction, deep love; and he should aim to have deeper love for his Sheikh than everyone else and more conviction in his Sheikh than everyone else and more obedience to his Sheikh than everyone else and to do more Khidmah for his Sheikh than everyone else. When these four connections are strong, that is called Rabta-e-Sheikh, and that is what you should get from Sohbat-e-Sheikh. That is what Sohbat should bring to us. SubhanAllah.
So Hadhrat Thanwi sahib rahmatullah alayh said that the first action needed is Sohbat-e-Sheikh. And in that Sohbat there should be no hypocrisy, and no negative feelings in your heart, and you shouldn’t feel a pinch when your Sheikh says something – you should feel happiness in everything the Sheikh says. You should not feel that any of the words he teaches are hard, no. Can you imagine a Sahabi considering the words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam as unacceptable or impractical? No way! The companions would say ‘May my mother and father be ransomed for you, oh Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam’ before making their requests to him. That is how to become Siddique. Look at the differences between the Sahaba – no-one else attained the title of Siddique. Why? Because the Deen teaches us that the first and most permanent thing that Hadhrat Abu Bakr as-Siddique attained was Sohbat; he was incomparable in terms of Sohbat. Many Sahaba envied his Sohbat. He had such Sohbat that after the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam departed from this world, then SubhanAllah, Hadhrat Abu Bakr as-Siddique radhiAllahu anh was laid down next to him. We see that – this is what Sohbat brings. Hadhrat Abu Bakr as-Siddique radhiAllahu anh was buried next to him when he passed away.
You can spend thousands of pounds without even thinking about it for the sake of Sohbat. I would never worry when buying my ticket to see my Sheikh – I was happy! I would take a loan to spend it in the path of Allah and gave up time and made sacrifices, leaving my wife and children and my shops and my business. I was a businessman, my brothers – ask a businessman how hard it is to leave his shop at Christmas time. There are many sat here – ask them. Who leaves in the peak season? We don’t leave our businesses for a Saturday or a Sunday! I am not praising myself, rather, I am just trying to revive the awareness that when you have a link with and love for your Sheikh, then at that time Allah Himself gives so much to a person. Try it and see – test this for yourself. I used to grab a person walking nearby and say ‘Can you spare two weeks?’ and he would smile and say ‘Ok, I’ll run your shop for two weeks.’ And then I would give him the keys and go, with no strings attached, saying ‘Take it – it’s yours for two weeks.’ So brothers, this is the love we should have; this is the connection we should have.
I am just revising these lessons for you – MashaAllah, that’s why you have come here. May Allah forbid that tomorrow you should want to grab me by the collar, or start saying ‘Where has he gone? He said he was a Sheikh and a Pir!’ I speak openly and will give you all the examples and Masa’il I have learned so that you can attain the benefit. That darkness is soon to come about which Allah ta’ala says {وَٱذۡڪُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ ڪَثِيرً۬ا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ} – and Allah ta’ala wants to save us from that darkness and from the severity of the Day of Qiyamah. Allah wants to give us the good news on that day – ‘Go – I have forgiven you!’ SubhanAllah. So can we not even do that much? What A’maal do we have that will be accepted? Tell me. Which Qur’an, which Salah, which Umrah? Yes? Do we have anything? Nothing is visible – we cannot see any Amal that will be accepted.
Hadhrat Thawri rahmatullah alayh, another great Sheikh, used to stand in Ibadah and cry all night long, so somebody asked him about this. The Wali of Allah has great Maqams – we don’t know. So the person asked him ‘Hadhrat, you must have an amazing status, for you cry all night long and your feet become swollen. You even cry in the day-time – why? You are a Wali of Allah! Why do you need to do this?’ At this, he started to cry again and said ‘What are you saying, and why are you saying it? The feet of the gracious Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam would also become swollen, and he was a Nabi, whereas I am a human being who doesn’t even know whether even one deed of his has been accepted or whether one sin has been forgiven! I don’t even know whether even one of my sins has been forgiven! If I don’t cry all night long, what else should I do?’ This was a very great Wali of Allah who wrote numerous Kitabs, but he never considered that he was a Wali of Allah. The Wali of Allah thinks that he is the worst person of the time – that is the reality. If a person thinks ‘I am the best and I have no sins’, how can he be a Wali of Allah? Tell me. If a person has no desire and no Khawf, how can he be a Wali of Allah? His Khawf will always make him think that he is nothing, that he is useless, that he has all the sins within him. This is Khashiyat; this is humbleness and sincerity and simplicity - this is fear of Allah. Do you understand what I am saying? This is acquired from Sohbat-e-Sheikh, from the company of the Sheikh.
The second step will come automatically - Qalbi Dhikr. SubhanAllah – Dhikr of the heart, Dhikran Katheera. So how do we do Dhikr in abundance? With the heart, not the tongue! Hold the tongue, and keep your heart always Muraqib, meditating on Allah, in the way that your Sheikh teaches you. There should not be any fluctuation for a minute, and with no other conditions. You do not do Dhikr for employment, or for some super feeling, or for promotion, or for success in the world, thinking that you will get this or that if you do Dhikr. Otherwise, a person starts thinking ‘I am not getting any benefit – no-one gives me Salam, so how have I benefitted?’ No, no, no – don’t look for results in the Dunya. Accept whatever Allah ta’ala gives you through His Dhikr.
{وَٱذۡڪُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ ڪَثِيرً۬ا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ}
In the intense darkness of the Day of Judgement, you will be seated on a Mimbar and everyone around will be envious of you, thinking ‘What group is he from? Who are these people?’ And Allah will say ‘These are the people who used to remember Me in the world – they would do My Dhikr!’ This is why we do our Dhikr, not thinking ‘Oh, I am sleepy, I am in pain’ – no. We have to complete our Dhikr secure in the knowledge that we will attain our destination from our Dhikr. Whoever runs after something else, thinking ‘Oh, I am not getting this or that worldly benefit – my desires have not been realized; I am not getting married because my request was turned down; I have been doing Dhikr for so long but I am not a Khalifah yet’ - if a person has one atom’s weight of this desire, listen clearly: if you have this Waswasah, then success is very far away – rather, you are on a negative path. The Salik should be one hundred percent genuine and do everything solely for the Ridha of Allah, always praying ‘Oh Allah, may You become pleased with me!’ Our Sheikh said ‘Allah’s pleasure is what we want!’ - what a great Dua he used to make. When Hadhrat Sahib was happy with someone, he would make this Dua ‘May Allah become pleased with you!’ The whole game is about Allah’s Pleasure. Masjid, Qur’an, Tilawah – we do all this to please Allah, not to please human beings. Don’t be like the person who spends his whole life trying to please human beings, hoping that his voice will be praised, that his recitation will be praised, that his Salah and Sujud will be praised, that his speeches or this or that quality that he has will be praised. He asks those listening to him ‘Are you not enjoying yourselves? Are you feeling emotions from what I am saying?’ If it was done for Allah’s Ridha, he would not ask.
Allah’s Ridha is such that Allah Himself asks the servant ‘Tell Me, oh My servant – what is your pleasure? What would you like?’ This is Allah’s pleasure, not that a person has to ask ‘Look at what I am doing and saying - are you enjoying yourselves?’ He is always asking people ‘Are you enjoying this? Do you enjoy my words and speeches and lectures and commentaries?’ Oh servants of Allah, think for a moment! Allah ta’ala has given you these Ni’mahs, so utilize them correctly and then Allah Himself will ask ‘Are you happy with Me, oh My servant?’ Allahu Akbar. Allah Himself asks His servant ‘What is your pleasure? Tell Me, oh My servant!’ Get this Maqam, where you are completely independent of human beings and have one objective – just Allah! That’s it – Allah’s Pleasure. This is what Dhikran Katheeran is for – just for the sake of Allah, not to please anybody. We sit, not for anyone else or for enjoyment or for Khilafah, but just to remember Allah, our Rabb - and we get contentment from that.
And Hadhrat Thanwi sahib rahmatullah alayh mentioned a third action through which your life will become made and which will cause the good news to reach you in the darkness of the Day of Qiyamah. Prepare for that today because time is passing very fast. Nobody knows when the last breath will come. If the last breath is exhaled today, that is it – the time for preparation will have finished. We can do Tawbah today and start our preparation right now so that Allah will raise us with the successful people. Don’t waste time – we can prepare even from today. Forget the Dunya – it is always pulling us, pulling us.
I have told you, haven’t I, that the time will come when a person will be stuck in one place and not be able to move. Could you have imagined fifteen years ago that today Umrah would be cancelled and nobody would be able to go to Madina or do Tawaf? Could you have imagined this fifteen years ago? Tell me – and now look. And if you do go now, what is it like? It is like a parade ground, with one stood here, another over there, soldiers telling you where to go. Was it ever the case that you had green lines and red lines and yellow lines for Salah, telling you where you can and can’t go, with so many restrictions? The Imam sahib used to tell us to stand together shoulder to shoulder for Salah with no gaps between us. Where have those words gone now? Why? Because this is Allah’s Deen, and He knows. He sees how people are and He takes everything back. Where have all those scenes gone? Tell me. Now he says ‘Keep two metres gap in the Salah’ – this is today’s announcement.
It used to be that some said to stand shoulder to shoulder, and others that the feet should be touching, and there were fights and quarrels and disputes between those who said the shoulders should join and those who said that the feet should touch. And now the same voice says ‘Maintain the gaps – stay two metres apart.’ This is in the same Masjid – and all because Allah is watching the games we play. But we still have no understanding and think it is all a joke. If we continue to treat the Deen as if it is a game, then we will keep seeing the Dunya change in front of us. A human being will shake, and Allah ta’ala will say ‘Since you left the Sunnah of My Nabi, I will make you run around like this on the earth.’ When Allah takes revenge, it is severe.
So what are the steps? Number one is Sohbat and number two is Dhikrullah, but we cannot succeed without the third thing. And what is that? Ittiba-e-Sunnah! Allah! And today we are seeing the punishment for leaving that. It is not a punishment for not going to the Masjid, or not reading Qur’an, or not going on Umrah or Hajj, or not visiting Arafat – we do all the actions under the sun. But there is one action that we do not perform, and due to this, the punishment has come and the world is upside down. This is all because we left Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam, so Allah has left us. We left His Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam, so Allah has left us! The Sunnahs are not being observed, faces have changed, Purdah has gone, immodesty is in front of us, music and singing is common, Masjids have become playgrounds, and fighting and quarrelling and disputation are all around in the world. The face of the world has changed – our Deen has changed. Everything has changed.
So Allah decided Himself ‘You left My Nabi, so I have left you. Go!’ And now, sometimes Corona will come, sometimes Corona’s mum will come, sometimes Corona’s dad will come – different names and different diseases. Sometimes masks will have to be worn, sometimes shirts will have to be removed – Allah will make us do various things in various ways. Allah knows best. Our Tawbah isn’t even Tawbah now – we don’t even know how to cry; we laugh instead. So many things have happened that we laugh and jest and joke about them and do thousands of useless things on the phone. Playing with this toy has become so widespread, but every day, news comes about Allah’s Deen. Even today, somebody was saying that in a Masjid in London which deals with Janazahs, there are so many Janazahs one after another that they have to assign numbers to them so that each is processed in turn. There is a queue for the Janazahs stretching outside. One brother was saying that where he works – may Allah forbid, may Allah forbid! – they now burn the coffins, saying that they have to burn them due to the burden of numbers.
What is happening in this day and age? But for us, it is all a game. We continue to break the link with Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam and yet we cannot imagine that we have committed a sin. We can’t accept it or imagine it. If you practice one Sunnah, you get the reward of one hundred martyrs – and the one whose blessed tongue said this was he who recited the Qur’an. “Man ahya Sunnati ‘inda Fasaada Ummati’ – ‘If, at the time of disarray and discord in my Ummah, one human being prays Jumu’ah like me, if he wears my Libaas, if he has my appearance, then I, Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam, bear witness that he will get the Thawab of one hundred martyrs.’ We believe in the Qur’an, so what about the person who delivered the Qur’an to us? Don’t we believe what he tells us? Don’t we believe what the Qur’an tells us about him - {وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ} – that he doesn’t speak of his own accord? Allah says this is the Qur’an. He doesn’t speak of his own accord, and all the Sunnahs came from his blessed tongue. All his actions are recorded in Bukhari Sharif and by Imam Malik and Baihaqi and in all the Kitabs of Hadith. Allah ta’ala spread that Deen and Allah ta’ala spread every single action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
Why? Just as the Qur’an has been protected and Allah ta’ala has protected Dhikr, so also, in respect of this third thing, every action of the Sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam will continue until Qiyamah. No-one can wipe it away. No-one can wipe away the Qur’an, no-one can wipe away Dhikrullah, and nobody can wipe away the Sunnat-e-Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. How can it be wiped away or eliminated? Tell me. In the country in which we are sitting, SubhanAllah, could you have imagined that the shining crown of the Imamah would be on everyone’s heads? Where did these people come from? Who selected them? The same people who came from so-called Muslim countries – they are sitting here now – how did they get to this point? When Allah ta’ala put the love in their hearts, how you were changed and improved! Has He not put His crown on your heads? And hasn’t everyone got a Niqab on their face now? Those sisters say ‘We didn’t wear the Niqab when we came to this country’ - and by contrast, some who used to wear it when they came ended up removing everything and becoming naked. They say ‘What will the Dunya say? We have to take it off – we can’t wear the Hijab and the Niqab now.’ Allah says ‘You may not wear it, but I will give it to those who were here before instead!’
Don’t many sisters wear Niqab now? They wear it due to fear of Corona - but nobody wears it due to the fear of Allah. Are a people who behave like this worthy of the life they have been given? It is a big miracle that we are still wandering around in this Dunya. We have exhibited so much opposition to Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, but even so, we are still able to walk around on the earth. Remember this. If you tell somebody to keep a beard, he says ‘What nonsense and rubbish are you speaking? What Deen is this that you have to keep a beard?’ His reply is ‘Is the beard part of Deen?’ And if you remind him to pray Salah, he says ‘Is Salah part of the Deen? Why are you telling me to pray Salah?’ To everything you say, he says ‘Is this a part of the Deen? How can we practice this Deen is this day and age? It is not necessary. We are not living in the generation of the Sahaba, so why is it necessary?’ You hear thousands of Wasawah in their negative responses. Why? Because he doesn’t know. He doesn’t know about the reality of death. He says ‘Death is nothing – no worries.’ When death comes in front of him, he will realise what the reality of death is. This life that Allah ta’ala has given us is a massive Ni’mah. Allah says ‘Go and earn your Akhirah while you are on the earth – and don’t waste your time!
So what about this third action? Such a great human being is telling us this, imagine. Do you think that by leaving the Sunnah, you will find Allah? You think you will attain Allah’s nearness after leaving the Sunnah, and that Dhikr alone will be enough? No way! You cannot attain Allah this way. If you oppose the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, you can never get to the destination. Who says this? Hadhrat Sheikh Saadi sahib rahmatullah alayh. This is what those who attained the destination tell us. He says ‘After doing Mujahidah and making effort throughout my life, I reached the conclusion that you cannot even imagine attaining Allah’s nearness without the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. It is impossible. You seek the destination by opposing the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam? Impossible.’ The great Persian poet, Sheikh Saadi sahib rahmatullah alayh said this. Forget it – nothing else can take you to Allah’s nearness. It doesn’t matter how many Qur’ans you recite, how many prostrations you do, how many Umrahs you do. All of these actions that you do to get Allah’s nearness will only be accepted if one condition is met, namely that they are surrounded and embedded within the Sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. They will succeed only if the fragrance of the Sunnah is on them. By opposing the way of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, it is impossible to get to the destination.
So who has told us these three actions? I am not giving you my words. Hadhrat Thanwi rahmatullah alayh has told us, and all the Walis of Allah have told us, and the Qur’an has told us these three points. So should we do these or not? Tell me. Or is this just story time for you? Are we still going to wait? The time for waiting has gone! As for number one, forget about looking for some superstar Sheikh. If you get a broken down Wali of Allah, and your heart recognizes that he is a Wali of Allah, then attach yourself like superglue to that person. I am telling you the words of Hadhrat Thanwi sahib. Do you know what example Hadhrat Thanwi sahib gives of adherence to the company of the Wali of Allah? He gives a beautiful and unique example. He says that if you are dirty and covered in mud and filth, and by chance you get to the bank of a river, then would you stop to think about what to do at that moment? Would you think ‘Hmm, I am very dirty – I wonder if I should wash myself here or not? Shall I wash in this river or not?’ Your heart would immediately tell you ‘Get in quickly!’ And the river itself will call to you ‘Come, come – I am pure, so I will purify you.’ Will it not? You would bathe in it immediately and clean yourself, wouldn’t you? Hadhrat Thanwi sahib then said ‘Remember, this example is just the same as if you are in a bad way, immersed in sins, and you come across a Wali of Allah. So take the example of the dirty man at the river and don’t think for a second. Don’t hesitate for a second, SubhanAllah. The Wali is also calling you, saying ‘I am pure, so I will purify you!’
SubhanAllah, Allahu Akbar – Hadhrat Thanwi sahib has told us this. Grab hold of the company of Allah’s Wali and never leave him. No matter how much dirt you have upon you, he will immediately purify you, and in his gaze there is so much cure that the colour of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam will come onto you. The Dunya will be amazed and shocked and say ‘What has happened to you? How come you have changed – what happened? Where did you go? Who affected you? What did you drink? What was the price?’ No! With one glance, such love came inside you that your life was transformed! This is attained from one moment in the company of the Wali of Allah, SubhanAllah.
So my brothers, we are in a generation of drought. You won’t find Junaid al-Baghdadi or Bayazid al-Bistami or Abdul Qadir al-Jilani or Mujaddid Alf Thani - nor will you find Hadhrat Ali Murtaza. Now, you will just find some broken down Sheikh, but if you find such a one and your heart attests, then adhere yourself to that person like superglue for the sake of your Akhirah. Why? Because Allah ta’ala is telling us ‘This is your job! To attain My nearness, find the company of the Wali of Allah, and I will put the Barakah and blessings into that connection, SubhanAllah. I will make that Sheikh like Bayazid al-Bistami for you, I will make him Junaid al-Baghdadi for you, I will make him Hassan al-Basri for you. I will give you the same emotions you would have got sitting in the company of those people.’ Say SubhanAllah! Allah ta’ala has given us the means to acquire everything, but we have to want to acquire it.
May Allah ta’ala also give me the Tawfeeq to grab hold firmly to the lesson that we have revised today. Keep on listening to these Bayans. Hold on to them, for Allah ta’ala has given these Ni’mahs to us. These are Ni’mahs that Allah ta’ala has given as we listen to these words through the phone. Whoever is my Mureed should listen to them time and time again – these are beneficial words, alhamdulillah. I listen to them myself! I listen because it is not me who is speaking; rather, behind me is my Sheikh, Hadhrat Ali Murtaza rahmatullah alayh, SubhanAllah! It is his power that is running. I do not have the energy and power to speak - this is not my capability. Why? I now remember another statement of Hadhrat Thanwi sahib rahmatullah alayh. What did he say? He said ‘When you sit in the company of your Sheikh, then what will you not attain? You will get ‘Ilm and you will also get Amal – both knowledge and practice will come to you.’ In the places where Duroos are given, you acquire ‘Ilm rather than Amal, but in the Sohbat of the Sheikh, the lessons are such that both knowledge and practice are acquired. If anyone wishes to disagree with Hadhrat Thanwi sahib, he is free to do so – but this is what he said.
This is what happens in a Khanqah - you attain both of these things in the company of the Sheikh, but only if you follow the three principles that I have explained. If you do so, you will attain everything, alhamdulillah, for there is no misguidance in these places. May Allah ta’ala give us all the Tawfeeq. Ameen
