 Advice to a Sahabi
A companion once came into the honourable presence of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and he made a request, saying ‘Oh Prophet of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, please give me some advice - and may it be short.’ SubhanAllah – a unique style of request! ‘Give me a Nasiha which is concise.’
Now the first thing we need to understand from this Hadith is that the person asking the question was not a person from today’s generation. Rather, he was one of the companions of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and due to their passion, those personalities were very different. They had one passion, a passion that they attained by means of the company of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, by means of his Sohbat – and that passion spread across the world and beyond. At that time, this passion was at it peak. Every companion had one passion and desire which was ‘May we attain success in the Akhirah.’ Whenever they came into the presence of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and had an opportunity to put forward a question, there was no objective or intention for any worldly benefit. Rather, the lessons they would request would be those that would make the love of the world vanish and would make love of the Deen and the Hereafter come into them. This was the passion of all of the companions.
So when this companion requested this Nasiha from Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, there was no motive behind this such as ‘How can I make my business flourish? How can the condition of my wife and children improve? How can I get a house? How will my expenses be met? How can I be saved from hunger and poverty?’ They weren’t worried about these factors because they had Yaqeen in the Qur’an, where Allah has promised that a person’s Rizq will arrive. The real objective of our being sent into this world is one, namely that we must prepare for the time that is to come in the Hereafter, SubhanAllah – so we should think carefully about the Hereafter. The companions did not have concerns about the Dunya, but they had extremely high concern for the Hereafter.
So the companion who posed this question obviously did not have any other objective or purpose. No companion would ask a question with a hidden motive or desire. So what was the reason for asking for this Nasiha? The desire was ‘Ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, may my Hereafter be made due to your response. As long as I live, may I remain obedient to Allah ta’ala and not commit any action against His Commands, and may I live within the Shari’ah always, obediently following the Sunnah.’ This was the sum of their desire, that they should be steadfast in observing Salah in congregation in the Masjid, and not be negligent in any matter, implementing all the Ahkams of Allah with passion and fervour. Say SubhanAllah! This was the meaning behind his request for Nasiha. Why? ‘Because this is that path, oh Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, that we have learned from you, and I want to acquire all of these things.’
In this world, there are obstacles – Nafs and shaytan are here, aren’t they? The Sahaba would say ‘I am here at your service for this reason, that I have only one concern whilst living in this Dunya that Allah ta’ala has given, namely that I be saved from the punishment of the grave, from the challenges of the grave and the challenges of the Day of Resurrection.’ These are the tests that are to come, are they not? A person who is dying leaves a lot of things behind – remember this. A person whose funeral we attend is leaving a lot of things behind. He leaves his home and his shop and his car and his ring and his watch and his clothes – he leaves all this behind. Then Shari’ah says ‘Now distribute his possessions and share his inheritance with the world.’ Everyone is thinking ‘He’s left this and he’s left that’ because the deceased person leaves his things.
But the most important thing that he leaves behind is a message, and 99.9% of people don’t understand this message that he leaves behind. They remember his possessions, and those who loved him remember his love and the memories they have of him, depending on the depth of their relationship. Generally, however, people don’t remember the message that he is leaving behind. In reality, once he has died, he has no interest in his old possessions, because those possessions won’t be beneficial in the world into which he is going. He won’t need a watch or clothes – why? Because he will get the attire of Jannah in the place he is going to! Say SubhanAllah. He will get great attire in Jannah, so at the time of death, all that desire for worldly possessions ends. He has no concern for that.
However, we need to pay attention to the most important message that he is leaving behind. SubhanAllah, if any person pays attention to that message, he can improve his life there and then. He is calling to us as he departs from this world, though his mouth is sealed. He is giving you this message as you are praying his Janazah, but the message is not just for his relatives. The relatives are left with the watch and the house and car and the business, and they apportion them accordingly, but the message of the deceased person is sent out internationally because he is going to the Hereafter. He is saying this: {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ} He is saying ‘Remember – this secret has unravelled in front of me. I am out of your vision now, I have disappeared, but very soon, you also will have Hisaab; you will have reckoning and accounting as well.’
Does anybody listen to this message he gives, my brothers? He is leaving this message in silence, for he has gone and will not come back. He is saying ‘I have gone now, but don’t keep living your life as I did, in deception. Don’t waste your time! {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ} The Book of Reckoning will be opened for you people very soon, and you too will be asked about the time you wasted in this life, about the wasteful words you spent your time uttering. You are wasting your time!’
Brothers, have you heard this message before today? He has gone, but he hopes that somebody may take hold of his message. He has gone, but until yesterday he was with us, sitting with us, talking to us, and when he left the house, he told us to prepare food, thinking he was coming back. He said ‘I’m just going to do something – I’ll see you soon.’ So what message are you and me given through this? That what has just happened to him will also happen to us! The message we have to take away is ‘Beware – don’t waste your life in this world. {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ} Very soon you will also be departing from this world.’
If anybody accepts this message, his life can change and improve immediately. There is no greater Tableegh than this Tableegh given by a person when he passes away. He is showing us practically and saying ‘Look – my hands are empty. I used to run after this world. I used to miss Salah for this world, I used to break my relationships, I used to embrace Haram and earn Haram, and now look – I’m going. Look! I was with you, and now I am departing in front of you. I am going to a place from which I will never return - we will never meet again. I am giving you all my things for you to distribute, but as I leave, I am giving you a Nasiha. You will also depart in the same way, so learn this message from me: change yourself – improve yourself!’ Isn’t this the message, brothers?
So this was the fervour, the passion, of this Sahabi – ‘Oh Prophet of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, give me a Nasiha. Advise me how I can free myself from the net of this world. I am trapped in this world, in its wealth!’ He requested this vital assistance from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. So what is this? One Sahabi is asking, but today, every one of us has a desperate need for this Nasiha. Every human being is desperately in need of this. We are all trapped, stuck in the tight traps of the Dunya. And the deceased person is saying {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ}. He says ‘I was trapped in this world, stuck just earning money, money!’ So the Sahabi was receiving this message for us and distributing it to the world. If we receive this message today, we too should be asking ‘Ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, give me advice. How can I become a good Muslim and live in this world, so that I am free of the love of the world and of fear of the world and instead have concern for the Hereafter?’
The Hereafter is the place of which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam spoke, saying ‘Oh people, the tests that will come after this world are very severe. And as for the grave, I have not seen a more severe and challenging phase than the grave.’ Allahu Akbar. After the grave comes the Resurrection and the Reckoning, and when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam went on the Night Journey, he saw Hellfire for himself. But when he gave the summary, he said that the severest and most challenging of the phases is that of the grave – and that is the first place we will go after our death. {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ} But people’s hearts are closed, so they are asking for something else. Tell me, how fortunate we are to be getting this advice today. We are getting amazing ease today – say SubhanAllah. Death is on our doorstep – it is in front of us. Let us focus on this Nasiha today. The Sahabi is asking, pleading to Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, who was sat in the world with the treasures saying ‘Ask from me! I have all the treasures and I will give you the solution.’ This is the Nabi who gave us the Qur’an and the Shari’ah, so did he not have the cure and the solution for these issues? This Sahabi asked this question on behalf of all human beings until the Day of Qiyamah who are in need of the solution.
As the Dunya progresses, the conditions change. Yesterday’s problems were smaller, and tomorrow a new issue will be introduced into the world for us. Every moment that passes brings fresh news. Today this happened in America, and something else in that country and now more problems in this country. Every hour that passes, we are brought closer to Qiyamah, and problems arise that invite us and draw us towards our destruction. Is this not the case? But SubhanAllah, may we be sacrificed for the blessed words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, when he gave a cure from his blessed tongue in the form of his statements, that was a Shifa, and it drew us closer to success in the Hereafter.
I am not giving a speech or a lecture, my brothers. What is the Niyyah we need to make here? This is not a speech – remember what I am saying. Allah ta’ala has sent you here and I too am sat here. It is not a forum for me to speak and for you to listen. You did not come for a lecture or a speech; I am not sat here for that my brothers. Nor am I explaining a Mas’ala or a point of debate. A Mas’ala, a debate, or a speech or a lecture is directed forcefully at people, and many people get tired as they sit and listen; but a person who comes to sit and listen to a Nasiha comes with his own passion and fervour. You don’t need to give an invitation to that person, nor do you have to force him to come or to offer him food after the gathering or give other incentives to make him sit for a few minutes. There is a sense in which he feels he is trapped in the circumstances when a lecture or speech is going on, and it is very hard for such gatherings to make an impact on someone’s heart. But the person who comes of his own volition, who arrives at a gathering with a desire to listen, he is not there to be spoken to, rather he comes to implement what he hears. SubhanAllah!
So today, with that passion, have Yaqeen in Allah’s Mercy. We haven’t come here just to listen and to be told, to listen dumbly – no. Whatever Allah ta’ala delivers to us today, we will fill our treasure chests and depart. The Sahaba-e-Kiram radhiAllahu anhum will change our lives today. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said ‘Every companion of mine is like a star in the sky. Every one of them is a star, and whichever star you choose, it will guide you.’ Allahu Akbar. So today, listen carefully to what I am saying, my brothers! Consider that he is taking us out of the trap that we are stuck in so that we can become obedient servants, follow Allah’s Ahkams and obey every order of Allah. If Allah says ‘Do Purdah’, we will do Purdah; if Allah says ‘Keep the beard’, we will keep the beard; if Allah says ‘Pray Salah in the Masjid’, we will pray Salah like that. All the orders Allah ta’ala tells us to do, we will do them. On the other hand, any actions about which Allah says ‘I am displeased with this; beware, do not eat this; don’t do this Haram action; don’t go towards Riba; don’t do immodest actions; don’t listen to music or engage in singing and dancing’ – we will refrain from all such actions. We want to refrain from them, don’t we? So we will get both things. The Sahabi was saying ‘Ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, I don’t want to do things that are the worst actions and will result in the worst consequences in the grave, that place about which you said that you have not seen a worse or more severe place. I want to be saved from that difficulty.’
Never mind the Nasiha to the Sahabi - it is about us! We are the ones who need to be saved from that severity. So his request for a Nasiha was a plea for help in this regard. Do you understand what I am saying? Ok. So he asked one question: ‘Oh Prophet of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, please give me a Nasiha’ – and the statement that he followed up with was so fantastic. He said ‘Please give me a Nasiha, but make it concise.’ One hundred percent, this request was not for that day and age – no doubt about it. He said ‘Please tell me an Amal, ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, and make it an Amal that I can do easily, for I don’t have time’ – and today, most definitely, we don’t have time. So the request was for today! This is such a great solution that from it, we can get the summary of the Deen. We can attain Salah, we can become pious, we can leave the sins, we can obey all of Allah’s orders, we can become obedient servants. Look at his request1 We will believe in the Qur’an and we will obey the Qur’an and recite the Qur’an – that Sahabi was asking for all these things. And Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave a whole ocean of guidance in a small package, for he had said ‘Ask me a question and I will give you the answer!’
Do you understand what I am saying my brothers? What a great need we have for this in our lives today. What a concise response he gave! We may not, for example, be able to go out for 40 days, or spend years in jungles like the people of the olden days used to do, or do lengthy Tasbeehat or recitations, or perform long prayers and so on. If we were given the Hukm to do so, we could smile and attempt it, if we had to do such things to be saved from the punishment of the grave. But the request was for a concise answer so that he could carry on living in the world, looking after his wife and children – SubhanAllah. We want to be able to bring up our children, to look after them and our wife, to have a business; we want cars and houses – we want everything! But alongside the Dunya, SubhanAllah, we want to continue to implement and practice all of Allah orders and to be saved from sins. It is not about abandoning work and staying at home and not doing anything – no. This is not what the Shari’ah says. So what a great request! He said ‘Oh Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, I want to obey the Deen, but I don’t want any disturbance in my Dunya. I don’t want my wife and children to grab my legs and complain that I am always running off to the Masjid and am so focussed on Deen that I don’t do anything else. Ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, give me a Nasiha and a practice that is concise so that I can acquire the whole Deen in my life easily.’
Shall I tell you the answer? But remember, it is not about listening. What intention should we make? We will need to step forward physically, so we should be prepared. Are we ready? SubhanAllah! The solution is very simple. Otherwise, {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ} – how many people are passing away? Even today someone has gone, and we are making Dua for those Hadhraat who have left us and gone to the Mercy of Allah; and we will offer the Thawab of this gathering to them. Those poor souls will be waiting for us, knowing that Allah ta’ala has gathered together a good Jamah of people who have come without being pushed, a Jamah of pious people doing such a great Amal. And today we will deliver the reward as Esal-e-Thawab to those who are waiting. We will be in the same situation tomorrow, pleading for someone we have left behind in the Dunya to send some Thawab to us.
SubhanAllah, Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave the answer to this question, my brothers. Amal is coming now – do you want to hear? Are you ready? Amal is coming – get ready for the action. This is a Sahih Hadith that I am sharing with you. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said to his companion ‘You have benefitted my Ummah today with this question of yours. Whichever generation comes, even if it is the generation of Dajjal, if they do Amal on this Nasiha that I am giving to you, oh my Sahabi, those people will not remain empty-handed. It will be impossible that they do not gain by it, whether man or woman.’ MashaAllah! What is that Amal? Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam saw him, heard his request and replied ‘You should keep your tongue always engaged in Dhikrullah!’ SubhanAllah – say SubhanAllah!
Allahu Akbar. This is a Hadith, my brothers, a Hadith. It isn’t Mufti Sahib giving this Mas’ala, nor is Hadhrat Sahib giving you this Mas’ala, nor is it some big Pir Sahib giving you this Mas’ala, nor a Sheikh-ul-Hadith giving you this Mas’ala. This is he who came to distribute Rahmah to the world, the Rahmatul-lil-Alameen, from whose blessed tongue came Haq, truth, who only spoke what Allah sent to him as Revelation. How foolish for any human being or any Ummah to waste this Nasiha at this moment in time. What a great reward flows from such a simple act! All you have to do is keep your tongue always moist and busy with the Dhikr of Allah. In other words, you have to become a Dhaakir. Dhikr is your task, and then, SubhanAllah, our Rabb will fulfil all those things that you requested. All you have to do is Dhikr.
The Dhaakir has been given this guarantee: you will pray Salah, you will obey Allah’s orders, you will follow Allah’s directions, you will be refraining from bad actions and practicing good ones, you will be following Shari’ah, you will be implementing the Sunnah. Remember, shaytan will come, but don’t reject this path. Continue to do Dhikrullah with Istaqamat and inshaAllah, you will attain complete Iman before death and will depart this world with Iman. This is guaranteed! I am not saying this – I am in the same situation as you. This is about action. A Wali of Allah gave me this Nasiha and I grabbed it and embraced it. Today, with my heart and body and mind, I say that I took that Nasiha. I am not saying that I am pious or good, but I took that Nasiha and said to myself ‘Whatever circumstance comes, whatever generation comes, whatever conditions surround me, I will not leave Your Dhikr! Oh Allah, I will not leave Your Dhikr.’ I just grabbed that Nasiha that I was given. Don’t be scared and think ‘Oh Allah, I have done this sin and that sin’, or ‘This has happened while I am doing Dhikr’ – don’t think like that.
Remember: Allah’s promises are true! {إِنَّكَ لَا تُخۡلِفُ ٱلۡمِيعَادَ} Neither Allah nor His Prophet fail to keep their promises. These are true, sincere, honest promises. Deception comes from us – they come from Nafs and shaytan. But if we grab hold of Dhikrullah, a big guarantee comes with this, namely that inshaAllah, before death and at the time of departing, Allah ta’ala will have brought you to the condition in which you pray Salah and you will have left your sins. Dhikr is such a powerful action – this is a big guarantee you have been given. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has given us this guarantee himself, indicating that what we are scared of, that grave which he has presented to us as the severest place, more frightening than any other place we will have to pass through, the first place we will have to go after we die, if we do Amal on this Nasiha he gave of constant Dhikr, then we should know that Dhikrullah is the most powerful action to save us from the punishment of the grave. Say SubhanAllah!
So what a contrast, and what a big deception, if a person says ‘Oh, I’m lazy – I can’t come to the gathering; I can’t pick up the Tasbeeh.’ Shaytan has made such a person his solid client, for a person who does not do Dhikrullah is destroyed in this world. Whoever rejects Dhikr is destroyed. If a person neglects Dhikr after learning it, there can be no more foolish person in the world. Lazy? The game is over, oh mad man! You have wandered into the wilderness due to your laziness. It’s all over. Regarding that most severe of challenges that he told us about, Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has given the guarantee that Dhikrullah will be the greatest force to save a person from the punishment of the grave.
And as for the scene on the Day of Resurrection and its severe tests, Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam told us in this regard ‘I speak the Haq regarding the Hereafter and the Day of Judgement.’ What did Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam say? What a great Hadith – and you hear this regularly, SubhanAllah. He is telling us the cure. Sometimes, Allah subhana wa ta'ala lays out a sketch to show us what will happen to various groups on the Day of Judgement. Whether it is Qiyamah, Hashr, the Bridge of Sirat, Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam told us about the worst challenges – and these challenges will come. Whoever has left this world in the wrong way will fail them. As soon as my eyes close, I have left. I am not a patient anymore – I have died, and those scenes will come. That person has drawn near to Hashr and Qiyamah. In respect of the Day of Hashr and Qiyamah, Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that some groups of people will have a unique condition at that time. What will be their Hal? Their faces will be shining and sparkling – say SubhanAllah! Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam himself is saying that these people will be in a very good state. They will be a group of men and women whose faces are sparkling with Noor, shining with light. Then Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said ‘In addition to their shining faces, they will be sat on thrones of pearls!’
Allahu Akbar – can anyone reject this? Can any human being reject these statements of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam? Try it! The faces of a group of people will be shining with Noor on the Day of Judgement – imagine! We cannot imagine the intensity of the darkness and the heat of the Day of Judgement, and there will be such shocking scenes. The Prophets will be running around seeking intercession from Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. They will be begging! Whoever they go to will say ‘I cannot do anything for you.’ Isa alayhi salam will say ‘I can’t help you’, Musa alayhi salam will say ‘I can’t help you.’ Every Nabi will say ‘I cannot do anything for you – I can’t help you.’ On the Day of Qiyamah, everyone will be saying ‘Nafsi, Nafsi – myself, myself!’ Yet on that day, there will be this group of people whose condition is guaranteed by Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. He said ‘You asked me for a Nasiha, and I gave the answer.’
Now look at the description of these successful people. They will have Noor dripping from their faces, shining out from their faces, SubhanAllah. Allah knows best what that Noor will be. Their faces will be shining with Noor, and where will they be sat? On thrones of pearls! They will be sat on thrones of pearls – imagine their glory and status if that is their condition on the Day of Judgement. The Sahaba were shocked! And Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam further said ‘I am not talking about Prophets here. These are not the Shuhada or the great pious elders or outstanding personalities. I am talking about normal people here.’ SubhanAllah! These will be normal people who have been selected by Allah for this treatment, with their faces shining with light while seated on Mimbars of Noor and pearls, and everyone else on the Day of Judgement will be looking at them in awe. Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam is describing this scene to us.
The Sahaba were jolted with shock and their hearts opened up. They said ‘Ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, please tell us how can we be included in this group? We want to be there too! What is the solution? Imagine their quality! What was their Amal? What was their practice? We want the same Amal. Ya Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, what did they do?’ Allah ta’ala has given these people a great reward on the Day of Judgement. They will be people from different families, from different backgrounds, different peoples, different tribes. One person will be this, another that, a third something else, from all the different castes and classes and backgrounds. Thousands of castes and classes will be represented there. So many castes and tribes and peoples will be there, for through these Allah ta’ala allows us to recognise each other.
This group will be international, for this is an international Ummah - say SubhanAllah! Right here, in this Majlis, people have joined in from all over the world – say SubhanAllah! It is not just me and you, but rather people from around the world. What a true, Haq, promise has been made by Rasooullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, who said ‘I will take you into Paradise!’ Allahu Akbar – amazing, amazing. One is sat in India, another in Zimbabwe – this Noor of Allah is spreading into different corners of the world, far and wide around the globe. At the time that shaytan is making progress in this age, and as people of the world are falling into the control of shaytan, Allah has spread this Noor around the world and says to shaytan ‘You can try to stop it, but I will spread My Dhikr to all the corners of the world. My Dhaakir will be sat in a Masjid in Bolton, but he will be heard in Masjid an-Nabawi, SubhanAllah. He will be sat in a Masjid in Bolton, but he will be heard in the Haram Sharif in front of the Ka’abah.’
I am not making this up – pick up your phones and verify this for yourselves. Allah says ‘You will be in Bolton, but I will deliver My Dhikr there, because there is nothing that can restrict My Name!’ Allahu Akbar! Allah says ‘It is My Name that is being elevated, so stop it if you can!’ Say SubhanAllah. Allah says ‘Stop it if you can! My Name is so great that when they remember it, the hearts will split asunder! Dhikr of Allah will continue and continue. Who can reduce My Noor? Try!’ There is no greater Noor than that which comes from the Name of Allah. Everyone and everything is dependent, from the Ka’abah to the entire Universe. Everything is dependent on what? Allah! Allah! The Noor of Allah has spread around the world. Allah says ‘How could the remembrance of My Name be stopped? I will show you the Masjid that is the source, and it is in a small town in a small country, and from there the Dhikr goes to the Ka’abah, to Madinat-ul-Munawwara. And even when the doors are shut and sealed due to the generation of Fitnah, My Name will certainly be delivered there. My Name is everywhere and has no need for a visa or a passport. Only one thing is needed – an Ashiq, a person with the desire, who wants to mention My Name. An Ashiq is needed with the true desire for My Name, and then see how I will deliver My Name by means of the prevailing technology.’
Imagine the Maqam of those who arrange that technology – just imagine what status they have, SubhanAllah. Look at this – it is not a small thing. On the night of Jumu’ah, Allah ta’ala has seated us here – is this a minor thing? This is a Hadith I am sharing with you here today. So it is stated that different tribes, from different backgrounds, from Kenya, Zimbabwe, America, USA, from all around the world, people are gathered and will be gathered in this group – and do we not see this today? Has Allah ta’ala not gathered everybody? People are listening in Pakistan, and it is 8pm here, so it is 1am there, and Wallahi, if you look at the messages that come through on the phone, there are people over there listening to this gathering. They are doing so, I promise you. And not just old folk, but young girls and boys - young people - have crushed their desires, and so Allah has seated them in the Dhikr. They call out excitedly ‘Dhikr is happening! Dhikr is on, so we must join in.’ This is in Pakistan! Who can stop the Name of Allah? Who can close down the gathering? Allah’s Name is the greatest, Allahu Akbar.
It is shaytan who stops us. Allah’s Dhikr is happening, and it is spreading around the world, but there is darkness and people are in darkness. Whoever Allah desires and selects is chosen for Allah’s Name. Then what is the state of those who say ‘Oh I can’t go – I can’t join in’? Their desires are calling them away, but the Noor is being distributed across the world, and Allah is sending His forgiveness on the night of Jumu’ah. What can be said about that place from which the Noor is coming or about the people in that gathering? Many will speak against it, and hardly any will speak about it with love. They say ‘Oh, those who join in with that Jamat are mad.’
What do they mean ‘Jamat’? Is this some cult or group? We are just sat to remember Allah’s Name! We’re not a Jamat or a group or some cult or sect. The gathering is comprised of different people from different backgrounds from different countries, but they all have one thing in common. They are not gathered together and assembled for Dunya, and they will not be asked by me or anyone for money or worldly benefits - no. Nobody will come to the gathering with a desire for Dunya. Whoever comes, will come with the love for Allah! Have they come with love? Tell me – has anyone come here to see someone about a debt or such like? Nobody has come with motives like these. Rather, if they do have some worldly issues or quarrels, then due to this Majlis, those problems will be resolved. They will think ‘Oh, let’s forget that. We won’t discuss that – forget about it while we are here.’ No one asks for money - not even charity is asked for here. No donations or contributions are requested because Allah has said Himself that you will see people from different countries and from different backgrounds, from different families and different places, and after sitting there, no other desire will remain with them other than love for Allah. Allah’s Muhabbat will sit them down, and when they sit down in this manner, they will remember Allah - and then they will count as those who did this great action in the world, SubhanAllah.
So remember that Allah ta’ala says ‘This is My Rahmah! A person may come every month or every week, but those who I love more will come to the Majlis every morning and evening! It is a cause for great loss and misery to miss out on this Majlis which happens every morning and evening, this Majlis where Allah sends forgiveness every morning and evening. Whoever gets a chance should sit as many times as he is able, because this Hadith states that on the Day of Hashr, the face of the Dhakir will be shining with Noor and he will be sat on a throne of pearls, and the people around him on the Day of Judgement will be shocked and will be in awe of that person. Should we leave this Majlis? Is this the gathering of my dad or my grandfather? Is this my private gathering or my private Jamat? No! These are the treasures of Allah being distributed here. If Allah wants, He will keep it going, and if He wants, He will stop it. There is no saying that it will carry on forever. This is Allah’s selection, and if Allah ta’ala lets it continue, we will be grateful. It will continue for as long as the people of this town are grateful that there is a Majlis and they come and sit and join in. For as long as that happens, Allah ta’ala will let it continue. But Allah says ‘My anger comes due to people leaving the Majlis and running away, heading instead towards loss, and turning their faces away from My Dhikr. In that case, I will send Adhab upon those people, and they will partake of that Adhab instead.’
My brothers, these gatherings are currently ongoing, so Allah is telling us that we should benefit from them. Do you understand what I am saying? We should always be grateful for this great Ni’mah of Allah. When you go to Salat-ul-Fajr, then sit down for a little while afterwards, and you will acquire all the Thawab that is mentioned in the Hadith, as well as the guarantee given to the Sahabi in the Nasiha he received on our behalf for those who do Dhikr of Allah. Regarding these people, Allah says ‘I will take the love of the world out of their hearts, immodesty out of their hearts, sins out of their hearts. I will save them from the punishments of the Hereafter, and I will take care of them, keeping them safe and free from the traps of the Dunya. Calamities will come, but I will give them Istaqamat so that they will continue to be freed and saved from the traps.’ On the other hand, whoever turns his face and is ungrateful, saying ‘Oh, I can’t do Dhikr – it is too hard for me’, these Hadith establish that there cannot be a bigger loser than such a person. For this unfortunate person, all his A’maal will be put on one side; Salah, reciting Qur’an, Tableegh, reciting Hadith, Ilm, knowledge, this will all be put on one side.
We are not competing with those A’maal – everything should be done in parallel. But remember one thing: whatever Allah ta’ala gives you through His Dhikr is Ajeeb and unique. It contains a unique, Ajeeb and incomparable reward. What other Amal under the sun is said to come with such a reward? Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has not mentioned in any Hadith an action greater than Dhikrullah for saving you from the punishment of the grave. Dhikrullah is a beautiful, fantastic action, so Ajeeb and fantastic that Insan should understand the impact of Dhikr. It is truly unique. The Sahabi asked Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam for something concise – can there be anything more concise and simpler than Dhikrullah? Through the Naqshbandi Silsila, Allah ta’ala has given us such a way to do Dhikr that we don’t even have to move our tongues. Say SubhanAllah! We don’t even need to waggle our tongues, just close your eyes, enjoy, even doze off, but your heart is alive with Allah’s Name. You don’t need to move your tongue, for Allah ta’ala has already activated your heart. All you have to do is close your eyes, and in your heart say ‘Allah, Allah, Allah.’ Even in your thoughts, keep repeating the Name ‘Allah, Allah.’
Is there anything easier than this solution? Whose Dua is this? I say that this is from the Dua of that Sahabi who asked for this Nasiha – and his call was answered. May Allah ta’ala give to me and to all of you the love for His Dhikr. This is the most fantastic path, so never be lazy. We don’t know how long this Majlis will continue – I don’t know. I don’t know how long the program of morning and evening gatherings will continue - Allah knows best. The Khairat are in front of you. Look at the conditions around you in the world and what is happening every morning and evening. If we become ungrateful, then Allah ta’ala will remove the gathering. Allah ta’ala says {لَٮِٕن شَڪَرۡتُمۡ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمۡ} – Not just us, but even our children will receive Dhikrullah. Whether this is your wish or not, whether you invite them to Dhikr or not, Allah ta’ala will give Dhikr to your offspring through the generations.
Today, such an Insan has passed away, a man who was in our Silsila, and four generations of his family have entered into this Silsila during my life. This person was from such a great family of Dhakireen, and today he has passed away from this disease. Four generations entered – I remember that his great grandfather came to me in the Khanqah in Manchester, saying ‘Hadhrat Sahib, give me five minutes’, and alhamdulillah, four generations of his offspring are attached to Dhikr and are benefitting to this day. There are people like this today. This is Allah’s promise: ‘If you do Shukr to Me, I will deliver Dhikr to the generations that follow you. I will bring Dhikr onto their tongues!’
But we are ungrateful. If we sneeze once or twice or feel a little unwell, we run away. This is the biggest hypocrisy today that we have stopped going to the Masjid. What a great solution we have before us. In the morning, the angels are descending with mercies and great light, and we are sat in the Dhikr of Allah making Dua to Allah, saying ‘Ya Allah, we are remembering You, Allah! We are sat here for You, oh Allah! We are sending Durood to the Khatam-ul-Ambiya! The whole world is somewhere else and have shunned Your Name, but we have sat down to remember Your Name.’ The angels are proud of such a Jamah in this day and age of Fitnah and disorder and disarray.
Every one of us is running around the world with our own objectives, and our enjoyment is rooted in all the actions we do – Hadith, Qur’an, Tafseer, commentary – but in parallel, the greatest action to perform is what? Dhikrullah – the remembrance of Allah. Then see how Noor and light will come into all of the affairs of your life. How can you reject Dhikr of Allah? These Majalis are a mercy from Allah; they are Rahmah. Why? Remember that the Sahabi who requested the Nasiha did not do so just to listen to the answer. Whenever you sit down and listen, remember that Dhikr is not about listening – rather, you have to do it.
I remember a statement of Hadhrat Lahori rahmatullah alayh, a great Sheikh, Hadhrat Sheikh Ahmad Ali Lahori rahmatullah alayh. He was a great Mufassir of Qur’an, an expert in Tafseer, a Sheikh-ul-Hadith, Ahmad Ali Lahori – and he was a great Sufi also. You know about him better than me. He was a great Mufassir and the respected Ulema-al-Kiram would come into his service to learn from him – and my Hadhrat Sahib rahmatullah alayh had a strong friendship with him also. His Mureeds would come to Hadhrat Sahib’s Khanqah and spend their lives there! Hadhrat Sheikh Lahori would send his Mureeds to Hadhrat Sahib’s Khanqah, and so they would come with their Sheikh’s permission at a young age and spend time in my Sheikh’s Khanqah. He said to his Jamah ‘Do Dhikr! Do Dhikr! I teach you Tafseer and Qur’an and ‘Ilm, but remember one thing. The scholar is the one who makes the sweets, but the Sheikh who teaches Dhikr is the one who feeds you the sweets.’ So do you want to eat the sweets, or do you want to manufacture the sweets? Do you want to taste the sweets? So the scholar makes the sweets, but the Dhakir who sits in front of the Sheikh, he is tasting and experiencing the taste of those sweets. That’s what Dhikrullah is. It will give you the taste and the sensation – it will give you Amal, practice.
This is why, as long as this Majlis continues, we should be grateful servants of Allah and be appreciative of this Ni’mah of Allah and of this great reward that we are getting. Be afraid of the Qabr and its Adhab. {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ} The person who died yesterday is saying ‘I have left! I have departed this world – let me give you a message.’ The person who has died today is giving this same message: ‘What are you doing? You will also come here tomorrow. How are you spending your time?’ When they die, they are saying to us ‘Don’t forget that Nasiha! It may be difficult to practice in this day and age, but at least you can do Dhikr, can’t you?’ SubhanAllah. You can at least come to the gathering of Dhikr morning and evening, can’t you? Is this something that requires effort? Is it hard work attending a Dhikr Majlis? How much time does it take? Will you come brothers? InshaAllah! Do we need to even think about it? A person who has got a brain will certainly understand. So who could be more foolish than one who turns away from the mercy and grace of Allah? Grab hold of Dhikr firmly. This is not because I want to make you my Mureeds or build up a Jamah or a cult – no, no, I have no interest in this. I am just giving Da’wah for the Hereafter, for you to make your Akhirah.
May Allah subhana wa ta'ala give us the Tawfeeq to practice upon this, and may Allah save us from the difficulties of the grave. It is an act of massive ungratefulness to leave this. What reason could there be for a person to reject Dhikr? Excuses such as sleepiness, laziness – this is shaytan putting the feeling into a person’s heart that Dhikr is not necessary or important. What does he think could be more important? He says ‘Oh, I’ll do it tomorrow.’ What hypocrisy it is, that without any genuine pressing reason, a person should run away from the glad tidings of Paradise that come with Dhikr, running away from that gathering with Takabbur, with pride!
Even if a person was to sit down for five or ten minutes, he would fulfil the rights of the gathering of Dhikr. I have Yaqeen that a person who crushes his Nafs and sits down in the gathering for just five minutes, then { لَأَزِيدَنَّكُم} - inshaAllah before death, Allah ta’ala will make that person a Dhakir and he will depart a Dhakir. He will stop for just five minutes and will fully appreciate the gathering, thinking ‘Oh Allah, I am very weak, but I am scared that if I leave this Masjid and run off, I will lose out. So I will sit down for five minutes, because my Nafs has grabbed me and overwhelmed me.’ If he does this, those five minutes will become a huge benefit to him and will be a great achievement. If, however, a person shuns it, shrugs it off and runs away, this is an invitation to the sternness of Allah, who has said about these gatherings specifically ‘Don’t leave this gathering!’ You are sat in the Masjid, the Majlis has started, Dhikr is happening - and you walk out of the door? What? With no valid excuse at all? Why? He says ‘Oh, it’s alright, never mind – I have no link with this gathering. What’s going on here anyway? I have no time for this. These Sufis are wasting time, so let’s leave this gathering – this action is not important.’
Astaghfirullah ta’ala – this is why we have this condition around us that we see today! That is why we are in the circumstances that we are in. Various Hadith and Ayaat refer to those who turn their faces from Dhikr of Allah. Next time I will explain that verse to you which indicates the punishment that Allah has prescribed for those who turn their faces from Allah’s Dhikr. There will be Adhab in the grave! The Qur’an has explained the Adhab for those people who turn their faces from Dhikrullah, those people who make excuses and a fuss. What does Allah ta’ala say in the Qur’an in respect of those people? Read the verse yourself. The Qur’an has not come for reading though. What has it come for? For Amal – for practice. We repeat this verse and recite it again and again, but we don’t do the action mentioned in the verse! Allah says in this verse to beware that we are not of those who are lazy and neglectful of His remembrance and turn their faces and run away from it. You recite this verse of the Qur’an and have repeated it many times, but we don’t do Amal on what we are reading. Is this not the case? Rather, we do the action that we are told not to do in the verse, and then we say ‘Why are these problems happening to us in our life?’ We will realise in the Akhirah what the reality is. What we our condition be? {إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَرِيعُ ٱلۡحِسَابِ} We will realise very soon – very soon.
We are very weak, my brothers – we are all weak. We are surrounded by so many sins in our lives, but at least take hold of the assistance. Allah is saying ‘Do My Dhikr!’ Take hold of that way out, and Allah will assist us and help us.
May Allah ta’ala give us all the Tawfeeq. Amee
