Very dirty sin - worse than interest, which is worse than 70 times zina with mother. Yet very common
Several steps to eliminate this sin:
1) have proper intention to eliminate (eg if want to eat, will cook)
2) ask Allah for help - and of course this help will come
3) heed the punishments - roasted upside in fire. =Hadith: You are consuming flesh of brother/sister. Hadith: stench of backbiting would make whole Earth go unconscious.
You do ibadat,but all for nothing if you backbite. Story of man who did so many good deeds, but thrown in fire since all deeds gone with backbiting. Need to ask forgiveness of the one you spoke against. Hadith: backbite, iman whithers away like leaves fallen on tree. When backbite, you have no deeds.
This includes when listening - if in such gathering, change subject.If can't, leave that gathering.
