The 10th of Muharram is the day of Ashurah. This month is held in high esteem by Allah ta'ala and is filled with immense blessings. Many great events throughout history took place on the day of Ashurah.
Many members of the blessed family of the Prophet ﷺ were martyred on this day. This was such a significant event in history that only someone from the family of the Prophet ﷺ could truly fulfil the objective of this mission. That person was Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه, who was given the title of the leader of the youth of Paradise.
The Prophet ﷺ dearly loved Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه. Allah ta'ala chose him for this martyrdom as an honour, not as a punishment.
What was his mission at Karbala?
Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه did not set out in order to seek leadership for himself or to remove Yazid from leadership. His mission was far greater than that.
Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه did not wish to fight Yazid, nor did he intend to kill him, as Yazid was the son of a Sahabi. There was a relationship and a level of respect between them.
Rather, Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه confronted him because Yazid's mindset had become corrupted after gaining leadership. The Deen was being compromised, and it was essential that the true Deen be preserved and propagated.
Hadhrat Sheikhul Islaam, Imam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمة الله عليه, mentions that Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه was oppressed and wrongfully martyred. It was never his intention to fight, nor did he encourage violence. Rather, Yazid had begun introducing innovations into the Deen and publicly declared that he was not bound to practise the Shariah and Sunnah. This created a great fitnah, and if this path had continued, Islam would have been severely corrupted.
Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه wrote to Yazid in order to confront him regarding his wrongdoing.
If a person does not uphold the standards of the Shariah, then he has no true Imaan. Establishing justice is not only the responsibility of rulers. Every one of us is a ruler within our own home and is responsible for our wives and children. We will all be questioned about whether we implemented the Shariah, taught it within our homes, and advised our families accordingly.
We must implement everything that the Qur'an teaches, including the correct method of taking and repaying loans, helping others, and observing the manners and principles of Islam in every aspect of life.
Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه's decision to meet Yazid was based upon Ijtihaad — sound and scholarly judgement. He was a great Mujtahid, and his decision was in complete accordance with the Deen.
His purpose in meeting Yazid was to convey the Deen and sincerely advise him. He even took his wife and children with him on the journey, as he believed and hoped that Yazid would not oppose him.
Ubaidullah ibn Ziyaad was the wretched individual who prepared the people for battle and assembled the army. Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه requested to meet Yazid and made this request four times. He clearly stated that he had not come to fight. However, Ubaidullah ibn Ziyaad deliberately chose not to relay this message to Yazid because he intended for a battle to take place.
Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه then informed him that, if that was the case, he would simply return. However, Ubaidullah ibn Ziyaad insisted on confrontation, and thus the tragedy of Karbala unfolded.
Yazid is not free from blame, as he was also involved in these events. Despite knowing that Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه had arrived, he avoided meeting him personally and instead sent others to confront him. He sought to remove Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه from his path while attempting to place the blame solely upon Ubaidullah ibn Ziyaad, despite encouraging the confrontation.
The Ummah would have been in a far worse condition had Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه not gone to advise Yazid.
A believer can never truly attain success until he adopts the Hussaini approach in his life. This is the message of Karbala.
There is a reason why the Raafidi Shia lament, wail, and beat themselves. If they did not mourn in this manner, they would expose themselves as those who betrayed Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه, as they were the ones who invited him and then abandoned him. They continue beating themselves out of regret for their actions, and they will continue to do so until the Day of Qiyamah.
Fasting on the day of Ashurah has no connection to the tragedy of Karbala. It is a separate act of worship, as the Sahabah رضي الله عنهم were already fasting on this day long before the events of Karbala.
"Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him (alone)." [19:36]
Allah ta'ala uses the word Rabb here because when a person abandons the Deen and the Sunnah, it is often due to a weakness in his belief that Allah ta'ala is the Rabb. He begins to worry about where his provision will come from and how he will meet his financial needs. It is concern for worldly sustenance that often causes people to weaken in faith, migrate from place to place, and even resort to fraud and deception.
If Allah ta'ala created us, then He has certainly already decreed and arranged our provision. He alone is responsible for our sustenance, yet we often fail to place our trust in Him. Our responsibility is simply to obey Him and place our complete reliance upon Him.
No worldly matter should distract us from obeying the commands of Allah ta'ala, such as performing our prayers at their prescribed times.
We should live with this concern at all times. If we fail to obey the commands of Allah ta'ala, we will become deprived and miserable, and true peace will leave our lives.
We do not need to migrate to other lands solely in pursuit of greater wealth or provision. No one can increase or decrease what Allah ta'ala has already decreed for them. Therefore, we should avoid comparing our financial situation with others, as it brings no benefit and only endangers our Deen.
Instead, we should submit ourselves completely to Allah ta'ala and never reject His commands. This is the Straight Path, and it is the path that leads directly to Allah ta'ala.
No deed is accepted unless it is performed in accordance with the Sunnah. Through the Sunnah, we attain the love of Allah ta'ala. We should never oppose that for which Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه stood. We should honour his sacrifice by reviving the Shariah and Sunnah and by following the blessed way of the Prophet ﷺ.
If we truly desire Paradise, then we must embrace the Sunnah in every aspect of our lives. We must abandon sins, lying, dishonesty, and fraud.
The true lover of Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه is the one who revives the Sunnah wherever he goes. He remains steadfast through every hardship while continuing to uphold the Sunnah. Such a person is among the greatest AwliyahAllah.
In the company of a WaliAllah, a person develops a connection with Allah ta'ala and with the Sunnah.
May Allah ta'ala grant us the ability to implement these precious pearls of wisdom. Ameen.
