The objective of our hard work in this world, and our greatest success, is to attain the pleasure of Allah ta'ala and to achieve salvation. To die in this state is the greatest success for a believer.
In reality, Allah ta'ala’s mercy seeks excuses to forgive us. We do not fully understand His mercy, and we often overlook the methods and opportunities He grants us to attain His forgiveness. Those who understand and take these opportunities attain forgiveness and success.
There are many virtues of performing Dhikr.
On one occasion, the Noble Companions were sitting together remembering Allah ta'ala, and Allah ta'ala instructed the Prophet ﷺ to sit with these companions. He ﷺ came to their gathering and asked what they were doing. They became concerned and worried that perhaps they had done something wrong. They replied that they had gathered to remember Allah ta'ala out of gratitude for His favour of granting them Islam through His Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ praised the Companions for the action they were engaged in.
Hadhrat Jibraeel عليه السلام then came with the glad tidings that Allah ta'ala was proud of these Sahabah in the heavens.
It is also mentioned in Ahadith that when people gather upon the earth to remember Allah ta'ala, the angels announce their forgiveness on behalf of Allah ta'ala, and Allah ta'ala transforms their sins into good deeds.
Shaytan creates love for the world in our hearts and causes a person to chase after worldly gains. Thus Allah ta'ala has warned us in the Qur’an:
"Wealth and children are the adornment of this worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better with your Lord in reward and in hope." [18:46]
Through attaining the material possessions of this world and comparing ourselves with what others have, we gain no benefit in the Hereafter, nor does it bring us forgiveness. Allah ta'ala reminds us that these things are temporary, and the commentators state that وَالْبَاقِيَاتُ الصَّالِحَاتُ refers to the Dhikr of Allah ta'ala.
At the end of time, the entire universe may be destroyed; however, the words of Dhikr and the Kalimaat will remain in existence.
The verses of Dhikr are the permanent deeds.
There is ongoing benefit in performing Dhikr. When we depart from this world, we do not take anything with us. However, the Dhaakir will take great treasures with him into the grave.
Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه mentions in the commentary of this Kalimah that when Allah ta'ala commanded the angels to lift His throne, they struggled to lift it. So Allah ta'ala taught them to recite the Kalimah, “SubhanAllah.” As soon as they recited it, it became easy for them to lift the throne of Allah ta'ala.
This shows us that Allah ta'ala has placed the greatest solutions for our greatest problems within Dhikr. These Kalimaat are extremely powerful. Whenever we face hurdles or barriers in life, we can overcome them through the Kalimaat o
f more beloved to him ﷺ than the whole world and everything it contains.
He ﷺ stated that when his Ummati recites the above Kalimah, it will accompany the believer until the Day of Resurrection, and it will save the one who recited it from Hellfire. As long as it has not taken that person to Paradise, it will not leave his side. This is the meaning of Dhikr being among the permanent deeds.
When a person engages in Dhikr, it creates love for Allah ta'ala, and Allah ta'ala creates love for that servant. The servant’s connection and reliance upon Allah ta'ala become stronger.
Those who perform Dhikr will enter Paradise through a special door, through which only the Dhaakireen will enter.
The more we make Dhikr a habit and the more we love Dhikr, the more Allah ta'ala will elevate our status. It becomes apparent that the light of Dhikr spreads, and its blessings spread.
Dhikr is among the permanent deeds that grant a person permanent and ongoing success.
Even loving those who perform Dhikr is a great achievement in itself.
It is mentioned in Ahadith that those who are connected to the AwliyahAllah for the sake of Dhikr, who love them, continue to meet them, and attend their gatherings, then on the Day of Qiyamah the intercession of that WaliAllah will benefit them.
There is great value in sitting in their company because a person remembers Allah ta'ala in their company and learns Dhikr from them.
To love the teacher is a great deed in itself, and for this we must strive hard. To gain his love, we must seek it from Allah ta'ala, and Allah ta'ala will grant it to us.
The love for this WaliAllah will become a strong, permanent, and unique love. Allah ta'ala will guide this servant to the company of the WaliAllah, His beloved, due to his du’a. Upon seeing the WaliAllah, this person will develop love for him and will attain success in return.
These are the resources Allah ta'ala has granted us so that we may acquire salvation. All we must do is ask Allah ta'ala for the company of the AwliyahAllah.
After this friendship is established, it should be maintained by sitting regularly in his company and attending his gatherings.
Only through the company of the WaliAllah can the force of the nafs and Shaytan be overcome.
It enables a person to live in this world with comfort and teaches him how to live a life of patience and ease.
When we hear something beneficial, we should implement it immediately, connect ourselves to a WaliAllah, and learn Dhikr from him.
This will result in the mercy of Allah ta'ala drawing nearer to us. However, sincerity is essential.
We should not wait for our lives and conditions to improve before learning Dhikr. Rather, it is Dhikr that will improve our lives and remove our sins.
May Allah ta'ala grant us the ability to implement these precious pearls of wisdom.
Ameen.
