We should recite the Kalimaat verbally while keeping its meaning in mind, and do so with contentment. If sleep overtakes us, we should stand up, refresh ourselves, and repeat wudu so that we do not disturb others—otherwise the dhikr becomes disliked. After becoming alert, we should return. If a person does this, they are granted double reward. However, if one remains seated and falls asleep, they spoil their own dhikr and that of others, and they are no longer aware of what they are reciting.
Wudu does not break unless a person is reclining, but the quality of dhikr is affected. Observing the manners of dhikr is of utmost importance. Only through respect and proper conduct in dhikr does a person receive spiritual benefit (fayz). The name of Allah is عظیم (great). When we remember Him, He remembers us. This is a great honour and a tremendous act of worship.
We should sit close to one another in a gathering of dhikr, as this is from its etiquettes. Without respect, we will not receive any benefit. We should avoid sitting in a corner wrapped in a blanket, leaning against a wall while doing dhikr, as this goes against proper manners. We should not make ourselves too comfortable. However, if someone has pain or a valid excuse, then leaning is permissible.
We should remember that Allah ta'ala is mentioning us in the presence of the angels in the heavens. Therefore, we should remain attentive, fresh, and remove tiredness before attending such gatherings. When a person observes these manners, they begin to feel that Allah ta'ala is remembering them, and this is experienced through the enjoyment of dhikr, sometimes even bringing tears. Often, we do not feel this enjoyment because we do not observe the proper etiquettes.
The best worship on the day of Jumu'ah is sending Durood Shareef upon the Prophet ﷺ. On this blessed day, we should prepare ourselves as it is an act of worship. We should perform ghusl, wear good clothes, apply surmah, and trim our nails. We should display the blessings that Allah ta'ala has granted us. The Prophet ﷺ would wear a special garment on the day of Jumu'ah.
Every moment of Jumu'ah is valuable, and the reward for worship is increased on this day. We should listen attentively to the sermon. There is a special moment on Jumu'ah when Allah accepts the supplication of a believer, so we should be consistent in making du'a throughout the day. The time between Asr and Maghrib is especially valuable, and we should engage in dhikr and abundant Durood Shareef. Allah ta'ala Himself sends blessings, and it may be that while we are reciting Durood Shareef, our supplications are accepted.
If a person passes away on this day, they are saved from the punishment of the grave. We should especially pray for our deceased on Jumu'ah and remember those loved ones who passed away with faith. We too will leave this world one day, so we should develop the habit of giving sadaqah jariyah. What a great source of ongoing reward.
We should present ourselves to others with love and good manners so that when we pass away, people remember us positively and send rewards for our good deeds.
We should travel to the mosque where gatherings of dhikr take place. We should try to take time off work or extend our lunch break so we can attend Jumu'ah in congregation and participate in dhikr gatherings. Otherwise, work may continually prevent us from attending. We should even be willing to accept a reduced salary if it allows us to fulfil Jumu'ah properly. We should also pray that Allah grants us employment that makes it easy to perform good deeds.
A person may engage in intimacy with their spouse on this day so that both can perform ghusl. We should prepare good food on Jumu'ah and give charity, as all of this is part of the worship of this blessed day.
The scholars of hadith mention that good deeds performed on this day can bring seventy times more reward.
We should wear the imamah (turban) on this blessed day and seek its rewards. We should not feel shy or make excuses that it is unnecessary.
May Allah grant us the ability to implement these precious pearls of wisdom. Ameen.
