How Can We Become Sabir & Shakir?

Being given the Tawfeeq by Allah ta'ala to perform a certain action, refers to having the desire to perform it. Allah ta'ala creates the environment for us to perform that action with ease and without restriction.

Allah ta'ala is in control of everything. When a person has a strong connection with Allah ta'ala, He guides him and grants him divine inspiration. The friends of Allah receive miracles with the permission of Allah ta'ala. Thus, the more a person improves and becomes pure, the more he is granted good feelings and thoughts.

When a person has a good desire to perform a good deed, then Shaytan tries to suppress that desire. However, we should remember that this ability and environment to perform the deed was created by Allah ta'ala so we should not waver. We should remain firm and build on this desire by actually implementing the deed.

Allah ta‘ala has granted us health not merely to earn for this world, for provision is in the hands of Allah ta‘ala, and He will deliver it to us wherever we may be. In reality, our duty is to use our health in preparation for the Hereafter.

Whoever utilises his health and the opportunities that Allah ta’ala has granted to Him in the correct way, then he is a truly thankful person.

Our lives depend upon two qualities: patience and gratitude. Attaining the nearness of Allah ta‘ala, and ultimately Paradise or Hellfire, depends upon these two things. If a person acquires them, he is able to improve himself, but if he is deprived of them, he will fail in both worlds.

Allah ta'ala is the creator. Sometimes Allah ta'ala tests our gratitude and sometimes he tests our patience. Thus, either a person is in the state of patience or thankfulness and this is the biggest test in a person's life - to see how strong his connection is with the Hereafter. If we adopt these two qualities in life, we will be granted success in both worlds and we will earn a high level reward.

When we are thankful upon the treasures and bounties that Allah ta'ala has granted us, then Allah ta'ala will multiply that blessing and treasure.

We face ups and downs in life, and our circumstances are constantly changing. This is the nature of this world. At one moment we may be affluent, and the next day we may be poor. A great mistake we make is forgetting the blessings of Allah ta'ala, and assuming that whatever position we are in, we will remain in that position forever.

Even the blessed Prophets عليهم السلام endured severe difficulties and hardships. We too will be afflicted with trials, but what will save us, is patience and gratitude. Those who hold firmly to these qualities, do not become overwhelmed when faced with difficulties. Rather, they sail smoothly towards their destination. Whoever lacks these two qualities, cannot truly succeed or endure the challenges they face in life.

It is indeed a shame that we are quick to compromise our Deen when faced with difficulties. This reflects a lack of patience and gratitude. We should seek protection from Allah ta‘ala from the decline of the treasures He has bestowed upon us, such as our health. Gratitude to Allah ta‘ala is a guarantee that the blessings and treasures He has granted us will not diminish or decline. In fact, if we remain thankful, those treasures are increased for us.

The Prophet ﷺ expressed gratitude for his health by supplicating to Allah ta‘ala for its well-being. When a person performs an action after first expressing gratitude to Allah ta‘ala, Allah ta‘ala grants him the ability to fulfil that deed.

We should be a grateful and thankful to Allah ta'ala. Every moment, our gratitude is being tested. At any given time, we are either in a state of loss or gain. The best way to deal with both situations is to remain grateful in all circumstances.

A person does not become a WaliAllah through worship. Rather, we worship to adopt the qualities of being patient and thankful. Allah ta'ala desires that we return to Him with gratitude and patience.

When faced with calamities, we should turn to Allah ta'ala in prayer and supplication. We should be prepared for the tests and adopt patience.

If we lose a child, we must remember that, in reality, our children belong to Allah ta‘ala. He has not dealt with us unjustly through the death of our child, nor through afflicting us with any other loss or calamity.

We cannot be successful and attain Paradise without demonstrating the attributes of endurance and gratitude to Allah ta'ala. Adopting and demonstrating these two qualities are an act of worship and this is our objective of life. We must learn this from a pious person.

What is patience?
A person who stands firm upon the truth and he bears the difficulties and hardships which come his way. He makes many sacrifices to stand firm upon the truth. He considers lawful as lawful and the unlawful as unlawful. This is the greatest demonstration of patience. In the Hereafter, Allah ta'ala will grant great and unlimited rewards to the one who was patient in the world.

We should not become frustrated or anxious because of the difficulties and losses we face. If we remain grateful to Allah ta‘ala despite experiencing a loss, then Allah ta‘ala will increase His blessings upon us thereafter, for example by improving our business or granting us something better.

Which worship will grant us patience and gratitude?

The believer is full of good qualities. They are all within him. However, he visits the Wali Allah to extracts those hidden qualities and make them apparent so that the person may begin implementing them. When the good qualities are implemented, the believer becomes a high level believer.

Whenever you seek to learn and understand the Deen, always look up to someone who is better than you, more pious, or of a higher rank. In doing so, your own qualities of patience and gratitude will be strengthened. Spend time in the company of the pious, who already possess these qualities, for their character will have a positive influence on you and gradually rub off on those who seek to learn from them.

A person will not strive to improve or be encouraged to better himself if he surrounds himself with those who are beneath him in rank. As a result, his Deen declines, and he ultimately fails. Even in choosing a business partner or a friend, one should select a righteous and upright person to accompany him.

In the company of a pious person, you will notice that he is not attached to worldly possessions. This will make you grateful to Allah Ta‘ala for what you have, and He will increase His bounties upon you. Conversely, if you sit among worldly people who have attained wealth and worldly advancements, you may be drawn to worldly desires as well. This can open the doors to evil, leading you to become greedy, wasteful, and even adopt unlawful means to earn wealth.

On the other hand, if someone sits with those who are poorer than him, then he will become the wealthiest person through his company. He will not be greedy for the world.

If we wish to be a Saabir and a Shaakir, then we should accompany those who are better off in Deen. We should visit the sick so that we can appreciate our own health and be thankful to Allah ta‘ala for our well-being. Such visits reduce our greed and strengthen the quality of gratitude within us. We should always learn from the experiences of others.

Both these attributes are connected to the Deen and Dunya. If we adopt both, then Allah ta'ala will include us amongst the patient and thankful individuals. We will earn all the rewards of the Hereafter and we will enter Paradise without reckoning.

When faced with a loss, we should count our other blessings and be thankful for them. In doing so, we will become safe from depression and we will pass the test and become thankful to Allah ta'ala.

We should be content in all circumstances. No matter what we are faced with in life, we must constantly submit ourselves to Him without crying and complaining. We should let the calamity pass through displaying patience.

We should ask Allah ta'ala for health and the ability to worship Him in the best way, instead of begging him for food and sustenance.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement these precious pearls of wisdom. Ameen
