The Night of Eid

Ramadan is coming to an end. It has been a wonderful guest that stayed with us for a month. It gave us determination and brought us together in meaningful gatherings. It inspired passion, purpose, and strength to do good deeds and build positive habits. This reflects the importance of keeping good friends and surrounding ourselves with good company. The influence of good companionship can last a lifetime. We should value friendship, because a true friend is always there for us and supports us during difficult times. Without friends, it can be harder to face life’s challenges, as there are things we may feel more comfortable sharing with them than even with family. A good friend listens to our struggles, understands our feelings, and offers sincere advice and support.

At the same time, while we should make friends, we must also be careful about the kind of friendships we keep. It is important to choose friends who have a positive influence on us, encourage us to do good, and guide us in the right direction.

After Ramadan, a person may begin to relax too much and become lazy. He may become laid back and neglect praying in congregation. However, our responsibility has not ended. Tonight is Laylatul Jaa’izah, when Allah ta'ala rewards us for our efforts and actions.

We should continue our worship by maintaining the good habits we developed during Ramadan. This includes continuing to perform Tahajjud, reciting the Qur’an, and making supplications to Allah ta'ala.

After performing a good deed, we should do two things. First, we should be grateful to Allah ta'ala for giving us the ability to carry out that good deed. If we are ungrateful, we risk losing the value of that opportunity. Secondly, after performing a deed, we should seek forgiveness by reciting Istighfar. For example, it is recommended to recite Istighfar three times after every prayer.

One of the best remedies for illness and depression is performing Sajdah. With every prostration, Allah ta'ala grants us great rewards.

Why should a person recite Istighfar? Because we are not able to fulfil the rights of our deeds as they truly deserve. Our actions are not worthy of being presented to Allah ta‘ala in a perfect manner. Therefore, we have no guarantee that Allah ta‘ala will accept our worship. For this reason, we turn to Him in repentance, seeking forgiveness and asking Him to accept our deeds.

Often, when a person performs a good deed, Shaytan makes him believe that he is superior to others and fills his heart with pride over his actions. Through Istighfar, a person acknowledges that in reality he has done nothing worthy and recognises that others may be better than him. In this way, reciting Istighfar after performing good deeds helps to remove pride, otherwise, a person may become arrogant and haughty.

This night was granted to us so that we can perform these two deeds.

We should seek forgiveness for our shortcomings and ask Allah ta‘ala to accept our deeds, otherwise, they may go to waste.

The dhikr of Allah ta‘ala includes being grateful to Him, reciting Istighfar, seeking the acceptance of our deeds, and cultivating love for Allah ta‘ala.

In the Ahadith, it is mentioned that a person who engages in Dhikr during this night will have a heart that is alive on the Day of Judgement, while the hearts of others will be dead.

If we work hard and put the required effort in, only then Allah ta'ala will show us the path and grant us His mercy.

وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ ۖ

"And patiently stick with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure." [18:28]

Allah ta'ala commanded the Prophet ﷺ to visit the company of the companions. The noble companions had dishevelled hair and were facing poverty. They had not eaten anything for a while and were not fully clothed. They were in severe need and hunger, yet, they had left every worldly thing to remember Allah ta'ala.

Allah ta'ala instructed the Prophet ﷺ to sit with these companions who were remembering Allah ta'ala. He ﷺ arrived in their company and asked what they were doing. They were taken aback and were worried that they had done wrong. They responded that they had sat to remember Allah ta'ala out of gratitude for His favour of being granted Islam through His Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ praised the companions upon the action they were performing.

Hadhrat Jibraeel عليه السلام came with the good news that Allah ta’ala is proud of these Sahabah in the heavens.

The angels of this night are unique to other angels. They are here to distribute the rewards.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement these precious pearls of wisdom. Ameen
