Why is Tazkiyyah Important? - Part 21

Allah ta'ala forgives even the greatest of sinners. As we enter the last ten days of this blessed month, we should turn to Him with sincere repentance. When we repent sincerely to Allah ta'ala, He makes us His beloved.

Often, our desires and Shaytan make us think that we are very pious, that we worship abundantly, and that we have no need to repent. However, we should remember that the Prophet ﷺ was completely free from sin, yet he would seek forgiveness more than anyone. Through this, he taught the Ummah never to regard themselves as pious or free from the need to seek Allah’ ta'ala's forgiveness.

Allah ta'ala forgives the one who sincerely repents from his sins. Even if a person repents without having committed a sin, Allah ta'ala elevates his status and raises his rank.

We should place our sins in front of us and seek sincere forgiveness from Allah ta'ala. Through this action, a person draws nearer to Allah ta'ala.

Why do we perform Dhikr?

By taking the name of Allah ta'ala, hearts become softened and tears flow from the eyes. This state occurs when a person truly submits himself to Allah ta'ala.

Crying is a blessing from Allah ta'ala and a mercy for the human being. A sign of a soft heart is that a person cries in the court of Allah ta'ala.

Even if a person does not cry completely when seeking forgiveness and his eyes only become moist, this is sufficient to cool the fire of Hell. This blessing is granted since a person's heart has become developed.

Very often, we consider ourselves superior to others, particularly when we have gained some knowledge or skill.

Through Dhikr, a person becomes conscious of his sins. This state is only achievable through the act of Dhikr which is why it is a beloved action to Allah ta'ala. Dhikr removes a persons ego and it humbles him.

The most beloved creation of Allah ta'ala, Mankind, was created from clay. We should remember our origins and live with simplicity and humility. The more a person humbles himself, the more Allah ta'ala elevates his status. This is the essence of Tasawwuf.

If we develop this awareness of humility, the whole of society will improve, and disputes and quarrels will come to an end.

We should always regard others as superior to ourselves and avoid showing off. Pride only serves to degrade us.

There are two types of sincerity. One type can harm a person and lead him to Hellfire. For example, when someone outwardly displays their humility, such as picking up a pious person's shoes to be seen by others. This becomes dangerous and is considered a form of pride.

In reality, humility is found in the heart. The other type is true humility, which is sincere and leads a person toward Paradise.

If Allah ta'ala has granted a person status and he is truly pious, he is not expected to submit to you or pick up your shoes. He should uphold the true standard of his humility instead.

In reality, the level of humility among pious people is different. Their approach and mannerism are different, and not everyone expresses humility in the same way. Each person's actions of humility are unique.

If the Sheikh reprimands a student or serves him a punishment, this this is not considered against humility and gentleness. Rather, the Sheikh fulfils his duty as a teacher by guiding and nurturing the student, helping them develop and improve.

Our duty is to respect a pious person according to his status, and this is true humility on our part. We should recognize and honour his position rather than expecting him to treat us as equals or joke casually with us. Just as a son may become more pious than his father, he still cannot attain the same level of respect owed to the father.

A person who has developed humility and sincerity, has reached a high level of Tasawwuf and this is developed through dhikr and adopting the company of those who have already developed humility.

The levels of Tasawwuf are attained through the connection between the Sheikh and the student's heart, not merely by reading books or acquiring knowledge. This guidance purifies the heart. In contrast, if a person acquires knowledge only through reading many books, their pride and ostentation may increase.

True knowledge is attained through the company of a Sheikh. Negative habits are gradually removed, and this knowledge is reflected directly through the company of the teacher.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement these precious pearls.
