Verily, I did not ask you for an oath because I doubted you. Rather, Gabriel has told me that Allah Almighty is proud of you in front of the angels.
[Muslim Shareef]
The pious predecessors mention a few points from this Hadith.
It is not permissible for a student to begin an action without the permission of his Sheikh, such as forming dhikr gatherings. This is because fitna and innovation can be included in it. It is necessary to attend those gatherings backed by a confirmed Tariqah and lead by an authentic Sheikh alongside taking permission.
Allah ta'ala has placed wisdom behind taking permission from the teacher who has a sanad. Thereafter, one gains benefit from the action.
To establish a confirmed and authentic Halaqah is proven in Ahadith.
Tasawwuf is a path whereby a person takes care of his Hereafter and he attains the true deen in which there is no contamination, nor desires.
From this Hadith, we know that the dhikr of Allah ta'ala is connected with Imaan. Furthermore, when we perform a good deed and we are grateful to Allah ta'ala alongside, Allah ta'ala instils many blessings in that action and does not allow that deed to be contaminated.
The main objective of dhikr is to remain established upon the guidance which Allah ta'ala has given. We should perform dhikr five times a day in the mosque.
It is essential for those who practice the deen to be grateful to Allah ta'ala through engaging in dhikr alongside. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed this action and did not prohibit it, so those who lose out from these gatherings will not attain the true deen. They will become deviated. They won't understand the definition of Islam and they will act upon Islam according to their own methods.
This is why, those who are distant from dhikr, involve in arguments and disputes. There is fitna present in their lives.
The AwliyahAllah uphold the authentic practice of dhikr and they are established upon the path.
The objective of partaking in a halaqah, is to practice the deen and due to it our deen is improved and we are enabled to practice the Sunnah. Dhikr gatherings help us to make effort upon the right path.
Nowadays, people struggle to implement the Sunnah and begin taking out negative points in order to satisfy themselves. In reality, our deen is incomplete without obeying Allah ta'ala and His Rasul ﷺ.
Some perform dhikr to earn personal gain and some perform dhikr through abandoning the world and adopting the righteous path of life.
If we come across such a group who are performing dhikr and are striving to practice the Sunnah by making sacrifices and attending the mosque, we should imitate them and embrace them, although there may be others who criticise them.
Why do we perform dhikr?
To improve our deen we must perform dhikr.
One who is weak and does not feel like practicing, cannot imitate the Sunnah. He should perform dhikr and he will be reformed. He will be granted passion and determination.
Unfortunately, we fear other people's opinions and judgment. Through dhikr, this fear will also be eradicated.
How does dhikr improve a person?
Dhikr instils the love of Allah ta'ala within the heart of a person. When love is generated, a person feels ashamed adopting a life without the Sunnah.
Dhikr eliminates the fear and anxiety one feels when practicing the deen and he finds it easier to follow the Prophet ﷺ. Thus, dhikr is a great solution
وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةًۭ وَأَصِيلًا
"And glorify Him morning and evening." [33:42]
It is compulsory upon us to engage in abundant dhikr morning and evening. In doing so, we will be removed from the darkness. Wherever we go in life, we should take hold of dhikr. Allah ta'ala will remove our sins and bring us to the light of His deen. If we perform this action, we will be given the same reward as the companions when they sat for dhikr.
Whoever learns dhikr during Ramadan, Ramadan will be a witness for him. Allah ta'ala will appreciate his efforts and he will be sent to Paradise.
If we learn dhikr, we will begin to practice the deen with ease. We will not be expelled from our jobs. Rather, we will be assisted to practice our deen and we will be given respect for it. A person who attaches himself to Allah ta'ala is loved by the entire world.
Those who performed dhikr in the world will enter Paradise through a separate door.
Love for something causes you to chase it, for example, loving money or a woman causes you to become crazy. A person wouldn't earn money if they didn't love money. Similarly, when a person loves Allah ta'ala, he continues performing good actions no matter what happens.
Hadhrat Mu’awiyah رضي الله عنه reported: Nabi ﷺ came out to a gathering of his companions and he said:
مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ
Why are you sitting?
They said, “We are sitting to remember Allah and to praise him for guiding us to Islam and blessing us with it.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “
آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلَّا ذَاكَ
Only for Allah are you sitting for this?
They said, “By Allah, we are only sitting for this.” The Prophet ﷺ said:
