One should perform Muraqabah, silent dhikr, without using his voice. He should have complete focus. Our heart should be connected to Allah ta'ala no matter where we are and what we are occupied with.
There are two conditions of this dhikr and without them, a person does not benefit.
The first condition is Wuqoof-e-Qalbi which refers to having complete attention upon the heart. We must practice this and become habitual so that we are paying attention to our heart with every moment. The aim is to try to connect ourselves with Allah ta'ala constantly so that we are not disconnected from Him. This is why this form of dhikr is the greatest.
The second condition is Niga-daasth - to safeguard and protect the heart from external thoughts and Wasaawis. Our hearts should only be focused upon Allah ta'ala. If we don't reject these thoughts, they will spoil our dhikr and the benefits of our dhikr will reduce. Thus, we should immediately repel such thoughts.
These two features are what make the Naqshbandi order special and unique.
Whoever makes effort with Muraqabah, he will remain in the state of dhikr until he departs from this world.
During Muraqabah, we should acknowledge Allah ta'ala's perfect attributes and we should embed His brilliance and splendour within our hearts. When this emotion is developed, a person's heart becomes pure.
We should connect our Lataaif with our teacher and then request Allah ta'ala for blessings. This also gives one benefit.
To strengthen one's love and connection for his Sheikh and to eliminate evil thoughts, we should practice Tasawwur-e-Sheikh. One should envision the appearance of his Sheikh as if he is in front of him. Whenever we possess evil temptations, we should immediately perform Muraqabah and envision our Sheikh. This will cleanse the heart.
