Through these Kalimaat we recite, we are conveying the reward to Hadhrat Baha-uddin Naqshband Rahmatullahi Alayh. He is the founder of our Naqshbandi silsila and this order was named after him. His blessed grave is in Bukhara. After he founded this order, he was inspired by Allah ta'ala as he was very pious. He requested Allah ta'ala to enable those who join this order, to be connected with Allah ta'ala rapidly.
With the other orders of Tasawwuf, one is required to perform many wazaaif and to exercise hard work in crushing one's desires. Hadhrat Baha-uddin Naqshband Rahmatullahi Alayh acknowledged that the generations to come would struggle to make effort in crushing their desires as compared to the previous generations due to being greatly occupied in the world. He requested Allah ta'ala to enable the students to quickly become close to Allah ta'ala through the teachings of their Sheikh without having to strive as much. For seven days Hadhrat Baha-uddin Naqshband Rahmatullahi Alayh supplicated to Allah ta'ala in sujood and thereafter, Allah ta'ala inspired him with this order.
Allah ta'ala explained the silsila to him and taught him the Lataaif, the spiritual lessons and the stages.
There are three benefits of the Naqshbandi order:
1) No matter how busy a person is, a person may progress in the world without any restrictions.
2) Less effort is required and one does not need to perform extra and beyond. It is very easy to implement.
3) Our order is initiated where the other orders of Tasawwuf end.
This is through Allah ta'ala's selection and He has placed blessings within this order.
This order has been given the name Naqshband which refers to 'imprint,' as the name of Allah ta'ala is imprinted upon the heart. The Sheikh imprints the name of Allah ta'ala upon every Lateefah (spiritual point) of the student. It is a permanent imprint and cannot be eliminated.
The honourable Mashaikh teach the students to crush their desires. There are many methods to achieve this. Different orders have different methods yet, they all have one objective and it is not reward. The dhikr which a Sheikh prescribes his student, is not for the purpose of granting a person reward. Rather, through the prescription of dhikr, the Sheikh enables the student to crush and control his own desires throughout his life.
The compulsory deeds are what grants a person rewards. Some people abandon the Fard actions and engage in voluntary actions. They believe that this is the way to crush their desires and become close to Allah ta'ala. This is a totally incorrect belief.
One cannot attain Allah ta'ala's nearness through worship and nor does worship, such as praying, equate to Mujahadah- working hard. Rather, when a person is cautious over committing sins through developing Taqwa, this is considered Mujahadah and the way to attain Allah ta'ala's nearness. This is how the desires are crushed because it is an action which goes against the desires.
The desires constantly invites a person towards evil and sin. Through fasting, we develop taqwa and become cautious of sins.
Until the nafs is eliminated, a person cannot become near to Allah ta'ala and his deeds remain insincere. This is why Hadhrat Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Rahmatullahi Alayh states that it is Fard for every person to crush his desires through Mujahadah. It is up to the student to choose the method in order to achieve this.
These Kalimaat which we recite during the dhikr gatherings, were delivered through inspiration to the Mashaikh. We recite them as Isaale thawaab for the Mashaikh and in return we receive their faiz, blessings.
Wherever the student is satisfied and his heart feels content, even a little, he should attach himself there and he should consider that this is where Allah ta'ala will grant him the faiz and connection. Thereafter, a person will gain benefit.
A person who sticks to his Sheikh will never fail in the Hereafter. He will endure any difficulties he may face.
How can we know that we are receiving the blessings?
A sign that a student is receiving blessings is not through experiencing visions and miracles. Rather, the student feels peace and contentment in the company of his teacher and his heart desires to be in his company. Such a student will receive spiritual sustenance and will continue to receive it.
Allah ta'ala enables one to ask from Him because He wishes to grant him and the doors of Allah ta'ala's mercy are always open.
May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
