Naqshbandi Terminologies

The more a person's faith is strong, the more his rank is elevated and Allah ta'ala's nearness is achieved.

Those who have faith and make effort to perform righteous deeds, their sins will be forgiven by Allah ta'ala and they will enter Paradise. If we wish to be successful we must perform those deeds which Allah ta'ala has defined as righteous actions.

When we make an intention to engage in good deeds, Allah ta'ala assists us and prepares the means for us to remain on the straight path.

Allah ta'ala sent Prophets to this world and thereafter He sent the Awliyah Allah so that we can adopt their company. We must connect ourselves with the pious people because in doing so, it becomes easier for us to implement the deen.

We may think that we are not in need of pious company, however, this thought is from the deception of Shaytan.

Allah ta'ala doesn't place us in difficulty and we should adopt the lifestyle which He has prescribed for us. When Allah ta'ala desires reformation for his slave, He instils the love within him and grants him a guide who he is comfortable with so that the student can travel on his life journey with him. He grants him a teacher according to his capacity so that he is comfortable in absorbing the teachings of the teacher.

This wali Allah becomes our guide so we should follow his guidance. When we adopt the company of the pious, Allah ta'ala assists us.

The purpose of the Naqshbandi order is self- reformation. It prepares a person for success. We live in a fast-paced, digital era and this order is best suited for our generation because it does not require much physical effort nor lengthy prescriptions in order for a person to become close to Allah ta'ala. If the student is sincere on this path, then he progresses.

A student must adhere to the principles of this order. The third principle is Safar dar watan — To travel from one place to another. Making an interior journey, i.e. inside oneself, which is to travel from one's evil-commanding soul to praiseworthy qualities.

Whoever takes bay'ah should intend that he is migrating from an evil place - Nafs Ammarah and the evil things which are attached to it, such as corruption of the world, love of the world, love of wealth, ostentation and envy. Collectively, these things form a dirty location which a person is embedded in.

A student visits a Sheikh for rectification and to abandon such evil because until these things are present in the heart, the heart will be corrupt.

The angels of mercy do not enter the house in which there are pictures. Based on this, the pious predecessors say that if we wish Allah ta'ala's mercy to descend upon our heart, we should also destroy the idols of evil within us.

If we wish to become illuminated through our worship, receive Allah ta'ala's magnificence and experience contentment in the heart, then we must extract all these sins and spiritual diseases within our heart.

We cannot possibly be connected to Allah ta'ala and attain His mercy if we have the love for the world embedded in our heart. We must extract this love to acquire His love.

We may find it difficult to adopt this love as we love our wife, children and our businesses, however, there is a big difference between necessity and love.

If we live in this world whilst fulfilling our necessities, then there isn't a problem. The problem lies in pursuing the world out of love for it.

When a person loves the world, he begins to sacrifice his life for it. He begins compromising deen and the laws of Allah ta'ala for the sake of his own needs. We should not allow the love of the world to consume us. Rather, we should keep our distance and live according to necessities.

The way to achieve this is to develop the love of Allah ta'ala within us. In this way, the love of the world will be removed and love for Allah ta'ala will become dominant to the point where one sacrifices for His sake only and abandons the worldly things.

He will fulfil his necessities of life but he won't sacrifice his life for the world. He will flee to prayer and abstain from unlawful because he has the love for Allah ta'ala.

The Sheikh teaches the student to live in the world without possessing love for it so that he is enabled to adopt the love of Allah ta'ala. This is how one becomes closer to Allah ta'ala.

Sustenance will certainly arrive to us and
Allah ta'ala has already destined how much wealth we will receive. By working hard, it will not decrease or increase the amount He has ordained for us.

We become anxious over our earnings because we do not possess the love for Allah ta'ala. Until we replace the love of the world with the love of Allah ta'ala, the idols will remain inside us. This means that whilst worshipping and praying, we are prostrating to our idols and not towards Allah ta'ala. This is the reason why we are not positively impacted and improved by our prayers whilst we we should have attained Allah ta'ala's nearness via our prayers.

Dhikr is the first step to becoming closer to Allah ta'ala. When Allah ta'ala wishes to grant a person His nearness and friendship, He grants him the ability to remember Him.

He has chosen us for His nearness and to attain His special mercy and He wishes to raise our ranks through His remembrance. Allah ta'ala places the love of dhikr within our hearts. It is by His power that we are able to attend the gatherings. He has preferred us for His nearness so it is our duty to progress. We shouldn’t give in to our desires. We should grab hold of dhikr and it will make us successful.

Allah ta'ala introduces an individual to His friend when He desires to grant him His friendship. This connection becomes a means of guidance for that person. Thus, we shouldn't retreat from the pious persons company because it is impossible that a person won't benefit from his company.

On the day of Qiyamah, those who abandoned the pious people after they were introduced to them by Allah ta'ala, will be questioned severely. This is because Allah ta'ala desired Paradise for them by guiding them, yet, they preferred the sinful life despite this favour.

When we visit a Sheikh, the lower base desires are eliminated and replaced with praiseworthy characteristics. Pride is replaced with sincerity, lying is replaced with honesty and greed is replaced with contentment.

The practice of Tazkiyah refers to development of character via extracting these spiritual diseases. The first thing the Naqshbandi teacher focuses on, is extracting the students defects and impurities so that it can be replaced with the love of Allah ta'ala.

To attain this level the student must work hard through dhikr. Allah ta'ala has placed such power within dhikr that it removes severe sins from within us. It is our duty to remain performing it.

If we wish to migrate from evil and sin and attain the nearness of Allah ta'ala, we should seek a Wali Allah and learn dhikr and Muraqabah from him. He will engrave the name of Allah ta'ala upon our heart. When he does this, our inner self becomes illuminated and we will be improved as a person.

If we don't engage in dhikr, then our sins won't be removed. If our sins aren't removed, then we fail to abandon the world. If we fail to abandon the world, then how will we evade Hellfire? Thus, the more we engage in dhikr, the more we will be distanced from the world and its love and the closer we will become to Allah ta'ala.

Nabi ﷺ said “Mufarradun have gone ahead. They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ) said: Allah's Messenger, who are Mufarradun? He said: They are those males and females who remember Allah much." [Muslim Shareef]

We complain that we do not experience the pleasure of dhikr. In reality, we will witness its great effects in our graves although we are also receiving promotion in this world.

Through the blessings of dhikr, Allah ta'ala has raised our status. We are humans and make mistakes. If we are steadfast in dhikr and we happen to sin, we shouldn’t worry because Allah ta'ala will remove our sins along the journey.

The most foolish and wretched person is he who doesn't engage in this action which Allah ta'ala has praised the most.

It is the promise of Allah ta'ala that He will remove the evil from within us if we intend to eliminate the evil and work hard upon dhikr. We will gain the love of Allah ta'ala. We will sacrifice the unlawful things which we would once chase after. We won't even need to make an effort to leave the sin. Rather, it will leave us automatically as our heart will detest the sin. It is our duty to train our hearts to become sincere.
The heart which cannot accept the advice of Allah ta'ala is wretched. It will not accept the advice of anyone. It will not take heed of the admonishment of the Quran due to hypocrisy. Once hypocrisy is removed, and the heart is softened, one is able to implement the orders of Allah ta'ala.

The more we face temporary difficulties in this world, the more luxuries and comforts we will receive in Paradise. We should continue to leave the unlawful to earn more benefit in the Hereafter.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement. Ameen
