Allah ta'ala constantly emphasises in the Quran that we will be raised in the afterlife.
If we constantly reminds ourselves of this message and believe it wholeheartedly, then we would lead our lives differently. If we knew that we would face the consequences of our actions tomorrow, we would not be distracted by the materialism and comforts of the world. We would be focused on bettering our Hereafter by sacrificing our life and possessions in the process. A person is capable of this once he possesses strong belief in the Hereafter.
We are occupied in the world whilst acknowledging that we will die one day. However, our actions illustrate that we do not have true belief that we will leave this earth. A person who has true conviction in this, would not waste his time or chase materialism. He would not prefer to remain in this world forever.
The consequences of our actions in this world, will become apparent in the next world. This world is a place of ploughing and cultivating our seeds for the Hereafter. We bypass the Ahadith because we are so immersed in the world. If we truly believed in the consequences of the Hereafter, we would have concern for improving our actions in this world.
We should reflect and implement the Quran. Many of us recite the Quran, yet we bypass its messages. Our lifestyles are not in accordance to the Quran, thus, the Quran may witness against us in the Hereafter. If we do not live our lives according to the constitution of the Quran, we will not attain success.
Even if a person recites two lines from the Quran and ponders over its message with an intention to implement, it will transform his life. He will become improved and his sins will be removed because reciting the Quran creates the desire within a person to leave sins. This is how we must attain the advice and guidance from the Quran.
We fail to fulfil the right of our prayer and we forget that our prayers impact our Hereafter. The Awliyah Allah understood that they will have to present their prayers to Allah ta'ala in the Hereafter and they considered their prayers as earnings for the Hereafter.
Allah ta'ala has granted us incidents to learn from to develop this concern and worry for the Hereafter and to remove our negligence.
We should learn from the incident of Karbala. Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه was selected by Allah ta'ala to approach Yazid. He did not have an intention to fight with him, nor to earn the world. Despite the dangers, he went with his women and children alongside and without bearing weapons.
Those who fought with him desired the luxuries of the world as they were immersed in it, although they would pray and send durood upon the Prophet ﷺ.
The message of Karbala is that we should develop and strengthen our certainty in Allah ta'ala. We should lead a life of honesty without taking up interest.
Whenever a person makes this world his objective, he loses the awareness of the Hereafter. As a result, he becomes a wild animal and he rejects the preparation of the Hereafter. He loses himself in this world and his purpose is solely worldly gain. This is the basis of his success.
Unfortunately, our actions are performed for the sake of attaining the world. In reality, the stomach doesn't require much to be filled, however, we give up our entire lives to fill it. Those who love the world and live for the world, will receive wretched deaths in the Hereafter.
If we had concern for the Hereafter, we wouldn't sin all day long. When a person has concern for the Hereafter, he does not waste time in earning Paradise. The Awliyah Allah did not waste a second in preparing for their Hereafter for they did not want to earn destruction for themselves in the Hereafter.
Every day we should make it a habit to assess how much we have earnt for our Hereafter.
The first step is to develop the concern of the Hereafter. This will help us to change. Thereafter, we must implement the actions for the Hereafter. A person who has true concern for the Hereafter will not abandon the dhikr gatherings. Such a person runs towards good deeds.
There are three elements required for our deeds to be in accordance to the preparation of the Hereafter.
1) we should be moderate in all our actions. We should not be excessive nor too relaxed. We should be balanced in our worship.
2) we should be punctual and consistent in our actions for the Hereafter. Allah ta'ala accepts those actions which are small but performed regularly.
3) our deeds should be performed purely for the sake of pleasing Allah ta'ala and for no other objective.
These elements grant us Allah ta'ala's Mercy.
How should we develop these three qualities?
We can only develop these three things within our actions once we imitate the Prophet ﷺ, otherwise we will not have consistency in our actions and we will not be sincere.
Through his imitation, we develop the concern for the Hereafter. Without the lifestyle of the Sunnah, we will not receive success. Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه sacrificed himself to deliver this message. This incident should provide us belief that a person who is immersed in this world will never be successful. We should sacrifice our entire life to attain the true objective of life, which is Paradise.
The true deen is the deen which Hadhrat Hussain رضي الله عنه presented. When people become lost in the world, they have no awareness of the Hereafter. Allah ta'ala sent this incident to alert such people.
If we desire the success of the Hereafter, we must crush our desires and follow the Sunnah. Challenges may appear along the way, however, we must remain steadfast.
Yazid had memorised the Quran and he would give sermons. He was the son of a great Sahabi. He used to pray. Despite that, he will burn in hell forever because he became immersed in the world and he didn’t imitate the Prophet ﷺ.
If we consider the Sunnah insignificant and we abandon and mock it, it proves that we have no concern for the Hereafter. We are following in Yazid's footsteps and are worse than him.
We should pray to Allah ta'ala to change our mind-set towards the Sunnah so that we can start practicing.
