Why Are Sins Committed?

Sins cause a person's heart to become sealed. It earns Allah ta'ala's displeasure and also causes one to become negligent. Sins also distance a person from Allah ta'ala and causes him to be destroyed and punished.

Thus, if we do not assess ourselves, we are in great error, as sins are very harmful to us. In Musnad Ahmad, Hadhrat Muaawiyah رضي الله عنه narrates that Nabi ﷺ stated, "Save yourselves from sins. Do not consider your sins insignificant because every sin earns Allah ta'ala's displeasure."

The sinner will face punishments in his grave, and upon the bridge and he will be thrown in to Hellfire.

In another Hadith in Ahmad, Allah ta'ala mentions, "Do not commit sins and do not disobey Me and if you obey Me, I will become pleased with you. When I am pleased, I bestow My blessings and when My blessings arrive, they are limitless. If you commit a sin, it will wipe away your good deeds. I become displeased and I send my curse upon that person."

When a sinner is cursed, the curse extends over seven of his generations. These curses are impactful and lasting. These generations become void from guidance and become disbelievers, disobedient and hypocrites. This is because such a person committed sins.

A true pious person is he who does not commit sin, otherwise he is only considered pious by name.

Listening to speeches only provides you information. It is not the means to help you refrain from sin.

There are stages of sinning. Initially a person is fearful over sinning and does not fall into sin immediately. It gradually occurs. A fornicator doesn't commit fornication immediately. The murderer does not murder immediately.

How are sins formed and what is the process?
Sins begin through the Waswasah of Shaytan. If we do not know how to control and prevent them, they increase within us. Then the whispers transform in to our thoughts and the thoughts are given strength. When we do not prevent our negative thoughts, they develop in to intentions which strengthens a person's conviction. When we do not restrict and prevent our intentions, they turn in to words and physical expressions. As a result, words are given strength and transformed into actions. Then they are recorded. The punishment of the grave is the direct result of one's wrongdoing.

The world will change and big sins will come and go, but we must obey Allah ta'ala and refrain from sin no matter which generation we are in.

How do we refrain from sinning?
A person can only save himself from sins through the method which Allah ta'ala has prescribed and that is through the pious people who have carried out the work of Deen. The root of every sin are the whispers of Shaytan, so if we do not crush the whispers, they will multiply and turn in to actions. The whispers are destroyed through Dhikr. When the Waswasah enter the heart, Dhikr is what eradicates it. When a person engages in Dhikr, he gains determination and the fear of Allah ta'ala. He also gains strength to leave the sin and his bad thoughts are converted into good thoughts.

As soon as one desires to sin, he should immerse himself in Dhikr and he will turn towards good. This is why the pious people encourage Dhikr.

Dhikr is compulsory for everyone regardless of the status they have achieved. If a person fails to perform Dhikr, he is definitely involved in a certain sin. The hands will tire eventually, so we should engage in abundant Dhikr, which is the Dhikr of the heart. We learn this Dhikr from a Wali Allah. This Dhikr will eradicate our Waswasah. The Dhaakir also experiences whispers, but he will be given the ability to defeat them.

When your nafs takes you towards sin, know that Allah ta'ala's punishment is arriving. You should immediately perform Istighfar and only the Dhaakir is able to achieve this. Those who don’t engage in Dhikr, will not able to save themselves from Waswasah and from sins.

Dhikr doesn't take a person towards success because reciting Dhikr alone doesn't benefit a person. Dhikr and Sheikh are the means to attain Allah, not the objective. The means are many but the destination is one - Allah. Everything is a means to Allah. There are many paths to Allah but only one end point.

A person who doesn't love his Sheikh, does not have belief in him, does not trust him, nor serves him, is wasting his time. He should go with belief and love and service to his Sheikh.
Whoever goes to a pious person with the intention of pleasing Allah and attaining the Hereafter, he will attain this immediately and is forgiven by Allah ta'ala.

When Allah ta'ala rectifies a student through the means of his Sheikh, then Allah inspires the teacher with the student's guidance.

When we are invited to these Gatherings, we should please Allah ta'ala by departing with a good deed. We shouldn’t leave empty handed without a good deed. The best deed is to learn the Dhikr of Allah ta'ala and to depart with this deed. The right of this Gathering is that you learn Dhikr. If you learn Dhikr today, Allah ta'ala will raise you as a Dhaakir in the afterlife.

It doesn't matter how big or small the sin is. It is still a sin which we must repent from and sins can only be wiped away through repentance.

We should repent whilst having true remorse over our sins. We should make a promise to stop the sin and make a firm intention that we will not commit those sins again. Thereafter, Allah ta'ala will forgive us and convert our sins in to good deeds.

The doors of repentance are always open so we shouldn't delay it. We should learn repentance from the pious people which Allah ta'ala have provided us. After a person takes Bay'ah at the hands of a Wali Allah, Nabi ﷺ himself, supplicates for that person. What a great blessing!

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement.
