Cure for Thoughts

Hadhrat Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه narrates that Nabi ﷺ mentioned a common sickness. The sickness mentioned is a dangerous disease with regards to the world and the Hereafter.

A person's mood often becomes erratic. He is fine, and then suddenly feels anxious and distressed. Sometimes he speaks wasteful talk. Sometimes he feels like fighting and arguing. He is praying and then suddenly, his emotions change. He begins memorising the Quran and then suddenly doesn't feel like learning anymore. These are common experiences in our life.
After an argument breaks out, a person reflects and realises that there was no need for it. A person is unaware himself why this happens to him and he resorts to the sorcerers, believing that he has been overtaken by magic.

What is the reason for all of this?

All these negative things we put down to laziness, however, Nabi ﷺ has stated that these things are from the whispers of Shaytan. They control our life and overtake our minds. Our thoughts are what drive our movements. They make us abandon good deeds and they incite us to commit wrongdoing.

Nabi ﷺ said that when Shaytan is attached to a person's heart, he attacks him with his whispers. He bites on the heart of the believer and in this way, his whispers enter a person's body and spreads within. He controls a person's actions through these negative whispers and thoughts. He enjoys seeing the effect of this. Nabi ﷺ said that when a person does the Dhikr of Allah ta'ala, Shaytan immediately flees from that person. His leadership over a believer's heart is removed. On the other hand, as soon as a person abandons Dhikr, Shaytan arrives again.

Hadhrat Mujaddid Alf Thani Rahmatullahi alayh was in Muraqabah and he wondered how Shaytan injects whispers into the human heart. He requested Allah ta'ala to show him. He was a pious person who never left Dhikr himself. Allah ta'ala inspired him to leave Dhikr. He left Dhikr for a moment and suddenly Shaytan entered his heart and he saw Shaytan in the form of a mosquito attached to his heart. He reported that Shaytan bit his heart and he suddenly felt devoid and empty. He said that he immediately began doing Dhikr and he became free from Shaytan.

We are wasteful human beings because we've left Dhikr. Verbal Dhikr has its effects and benefits, but the genuine Dhikr, is the Dhikr of the heart which protects us from Shaytan. The Dhikr of the heart ensures one's attention is focused towards his heart during every second of the day.

Whenever you're angry and your thoughts are diverted or you become lazy, then consider that Shaytan is attached to your heart. Pick up your Tasbih and distance yourself from Shaytan. This is the cure. This is why it is also important to learn the Dhikr of the heart before your death.

Our biggest misfortune is that we have not understood Dhikr. The first lesson learnt in our Naqshbandi order, is greater than all other orders. Hadhrat Mujaddid Alf Thani Rahmatullahi alayh said, "Where all the other Salaasil (orders) end, our order begins from that point."

We must train our hearts because it is not easy to detach ourselves from Shaytan. Allah ta'ala has given Shaytan the power to attack us all day and the decision of Hell and Paradise are in the hands of Shaytan as he is sat by the heart.

There are two things which one attains from a Sheikh. The Sheikh revives the dead heart through Dhikr and destroys the Nafs of a person. He suppresses the desires of the student. If these functions are being completed, then attach yourself to that teacher. Sacrifice your whole life for that teacher.

We have left the teachings of Nabi ﷺ and we have rejected his Sunnah. This is why we are wretched in this world today. Our elevation is based upon following the Sunnah of Nabi ﷺ. Today we consider it insignificant and we mock it. Leaders are scared to preach and encourage others to implement the Sunnah.

In reality, the cure for everything lies in implementing the Sunnah and our elevation and progression is based on this.

Nabi ﷺ gave us these teachings which no other nation can compare to. We should grab hold of the Sunnah and encourage our children too. We should purchase the books of Sunnah and we should teach one Sunnah to our children before they go to sleep everyday. The purpose isn't to complete the book, the purpose is to explain the Sunnah ways to them repeatedly - the Sunnah of eating, the Sunnah of drinking, the Sunnah of socialising, the manners of attending and leaving the mosque, the etiquettes of going to the bathroom and the etiquette of urinating. There is no Sunnah which Nabi ﷺ hasn't covered. The Sunnah ways are a cure for us as well as a worship for us.

Nowadays, we reject the Sunnah and consider the Sunnah unnecessary. If we see someone disregarding a Sunnah, our hearts do not feel the pain. The ways of the Sunnah make up our entire Deen, but we disregard it.

May Allah ta'ala grant us the ability to implement and detach us from the wretched Shaytan.
