What is the Spirit of Tasawwuf?

Hadhrat Abu Musa رضي الله عنه narrates in Bukhari Shareef, that Nabi ﷺ was questioned regarding the 'Best Islam.' Nabi ﷺ explained that the individual who does not cause harm to others via his tongue, is the one who practices the true Islam and the true prayer. He receives the best Paradise and the highest ranks. He will be given the most beautiful Hur's and he will be the most closest to Allah ta'ala.

We consider Tahajjud and extra worship to be the best Islam. Rather, Allah ta'ala created the human being for the sake of the broken-hearted, otherwise, there is no lack of Creation who worship Allah ta'ala.

The greatest action is to be a true human being and control our evil, as well as our desires. We should dislike the world and abstain from it, whilst living in it. We should abstain from the unlawful and reject the enjoyments of this world for the sake of Allah ta'ala, in order to attain His pleasure. This is a great formula given to us by Nabi ﷺ.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands the Muslims are safe.." [Bukhari & Muslim]
Such a person doesn't give pain and difficulty to others, through his tongue. Imagine the value of this person's tongue in the eyes of Allah ta'ala! When such a person moves his tongue to request, Allah ta'ala grants him instantly. That is the value of that tongue.

One should be careful of even giving difficulty and pain to a child through his tongue.
The pain that one gives from the tongue, is so severe, that the wound caused by its misuse, is never healed. It ends relationships between friends and causes divorce between couples, within seconds. The pain caused by the tongue is felt repeatedly. It is the most dangerous thing which takes a person towards Hellfire.

If we don't avoid this, then we will definitely fall into its trap. People work hard on their tongues for their entire lives, so we should also follow suit. We focus and work hard on other factors. However, we should work hard on achieving what Allah ta'ala expects from us.

Taqwa refers to having certainty and faith in the unseen which Ramadan made us practice. This is why we adhered to our fast even in seclusion. Similarly, we should fear Allah ta'ala and abstain from sins, as Allah ta'ala is watching. A true believer fasts all his life and he breaks his fast in Paradise.

The people of Paradise, will have the luxury of merely wishing for a dish, or wearing a certain garment, before it will appear in front of their eyes. Nothing is difficult for Allah ta'ala and this is what belief in the unseen refers to.

Every student is determined to achieve the highest grade in examinations. Similarly, we should also strive for the best Islam. Islam is a comprehensive religion and all actions are included in it. The person who has the best Islam, will also receive the best rank in the Hereafter. He will be the superior individual. Therefore, it all depends on a person's determination and desire of achieving the best Islam. Such a person bears the calamities of the world and ignores the distractions of this world, in order to gain the best Paradise. A person will regret the time he wasted in this world not trying to achieve such a status.

Materialistic people, often engage in worship to gain worldly returns. They call out to Allah ta'ala, seeking the world, instead of seeking Paradise. This is because their objective is the world, so they seek it through every avenue. Whoever’s objective is the Hereafter, his thinking changes and his actions are performed with the Hereafter in mind. This is why the Sahabah strived to gain the Best Islam, the best worship, the best Hereafter and the greatest form of nearness to Allah ta'ala.

The action which takes us closest to Allah ta'ala requires hard work. If we work hard today, we will reap the fruits of our efforts tomorrow.

A person who has determination through his life, and practices Islam since his youth and well-being, will reap beautiful fruits, as, he didn't waste his life.

When we fast and pray for a period of time, it naturally becomes a habit in our lives. On the other hand, rejecting the world and controlling the desires, is a habit which is difficult to build. If anyone builds this, He is given elevation by Allah ta'ala.

The biggest veil between a person and Allah ta'ala, is this wretched world. The enjoyment of this world, brings a person down. A person runs around and begs from others, in order to attain the world. Rather, your provision has already been pre-determined by Allah ta'ala. If you receive extra, then it is not considered yours. It will arrive to the person it was destined for, whether it was destined for a thief or a bandit.
You are wasting your time begging from people and had you raised your hands out to Allah, He would've placed blessings in your wealth.

We require strong certainty to believe in Allah ta'ala, and we attain His nearness through the means of love for the Prophet ﷺ.

When Allah ta'ala uses the word قل in the Quran, it shows that He is using Nabi ﷺ as a means to invite the people towards Allah. The non Muslims in the Prophet ﷺ's time, only recognised Allah ta'ala through the means of his invitation. They didn't attain Allah's nearness, until they immersed themselves in the love for the Prophet ﷺ. Similarly, to attain the Prophet ﷺ's nearness, we must be immersed in the love for Allah ta'ala's Wali. The Wali becomes the means. First, attach yourself to your teacher. Whoever does not have faith in his Sheikh, can never have faith in Allah ta'ala. One is only successful when he brings faith in his Sheikh. If he doesn’t have faith, he will keep slipping.
When Allah has Mercy on a person, He sends him to His friend. You are not able to meet them by your own accord. Allah ta'ala is the one who sends individuals to be connected with the Awliyah Allah so that promises (bay'ah) can be taken from them, as mentioned in the Quran.

The Awliyah Allah have been assigned the task of giving bay'ah. Thus, we should bring faith in our teacher if we desire benefit. Once bay'ah is completed, then Nabi ﷺ himself, seeks forgiveness from Allah ta'ala on behalf of that person.

My Hadhrat Sheikh said, "if you want to take benefit from a teacher, then you require three links with your teacher, which are, belief, love and service." This is what forms a students connection with his teacher.

A student is tested by Allah ta'ala so that his status is elevated. The test is to assess whether he has certainty in his Sheikh.

If a student desires success, then he should seek out a teacher with the intention of improving himself, to be safe from the punishment and attain Allah's pleasure. We should rectify our intentions, otherwise our beliefs will be incorrect. If our certainty is complete, then our Imaan is complete.

The best Saalik is he who has 100 percent belief in his teacher. Work hard on this point and do not do anything without the guidance of your teacher.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement.
