Why is Dhikr Important in Ramadhan?

The time between Asr and Magrib is very blessed. The angels descend and assess the records of the people and then they ascend to the heavens and the angels of the heavens descend and they swap over their shifts.

The gatherings of Dhikr are very blessed and those who partake in them are very beloved to Allah ta'ala, such that He sends His angels down to this gathering. The angels surround this gathering from all 4 sides.

Allah ta'ala mentions with regards to dhikr,

الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ..

"Those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides.." [3:191]

Allah ta'ala desires that we do not become negligent of His remembrance even for a second. To constantly be occupied in His remembrance, is the way to show gratitude to Allah ta'ala.

So how much are we connected to Allah ta'ala in Ramadan? The message of Ramadan is that we must continue this action of dhikr for the rest of our lives because this action is what we were created for. It is upon Allah ta'ala to provide for us according to our needs and it is our duty to remain occupied in His remembrance and not forget Him.

We should make a promise not to abandon dhikr because it is for our own benefit. When we engage in dhikr, Allah ta'ala's love increases within us, and thereafter, His mercy arrives. Our sorrows disappear and the path ahead becomes easy and smooth for us.

We run around trying to find solutions, yet, Allah ta'ala says that if we were to remember Him, then He promises to take care of all our affairs.

Nabi ﷺ said, "The example of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not remember is that of the living and the dead.” [Bukhari]

Those who remembered Allah ta'ala whilst living on this earth, remain alive even after their death. We should strive to attain this permanent life and not flee from dhikr.

وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

"..and remember Allah much, so that you may be successful." [8:45]

Those who have solid belief in Allah ta'ala, hold firm on to dhikr. They recognise that it is not eating, drinking and physical movement which keeps them alive, rather it is dhikr which keep their hearts alive. Such people recite the Quran with understanding and conviction.

When we recite the Quran, we are conversing with Allah ta'ala so we should take the messages from the Quran and avoid reciting without paying attention.

Once Ramadan passes, the angels question each other as to whose Ramadan was spent in the best way. They assess the good deeds of the Creation just like we assess our turnovers after working during the Christmas season. The angels commend those who engaged in dhikr during Ramadan, because these people did not remain neglectful for even a minute.

If one is negligent in remembering Allah ta'ala in his heart, even for a second, then he is recorded amongst those people who are deceased.

My Hadhrat Sheikh used to tell us a famous story. A great Wali Allah travelled to meet another Wali Allah. The travel was long, so he lay down inside a Masjid to take rest. He saw a dream in which the Sheikh he was going to visit, had passed away and his Janazah prayer was being performed. This Sheikh's dreams were always true, so he decided to continue on his journey and recite prayers at the Sheikh's grave. He arrived at the Sheikh's town and asked the people of the whereabouts of his grave. They informed him that he was alive and they took the Sheikh to meet him. The Sheikh was present and he wept, explaining, "your dream was true. When I appeared in your dream, I had become busy in the world and negligent of dhikr, so Allah ta'ala recorded me in the list of those people who had passed away."

Allah ta'ala desires the dhikr of the heart. Our hands may be occupied with our worldly affairs, however, our hearts must remain occupied in dhikr. So we should learn the name of Allah ta'ala in our hearts so that our hearts can beat with the name of Allah.

To visit a Sheikh is a great worship and a means of attaining Taqwa because Taqwa is attained via the company of a Sheikh. A wali Allah is he who adheres to the principles of Islam, he works hard to remove his sins and performs good deeds. He strives to influence people positively and improve others. His lifestyle is in accordance to the Sunnah. When you sit in his blessed company, you remember Allah ta'ala. You earn the goodness for your Hereafter. You learn good things and you absorb the mercy of Allah ta'ala.

Hafiz ibn Hajr Rahmatullahi alayh writes about Sheik-ul-Hadith, Imam Raazi Rahmatullahi alayh, that he used to make a unique dua. "Oh Allah, I do not desire to pass a night in which your pleasure is devoid. I do not desire to pass a day in which I do not worship you. I desire to recite your Quran and I desire that You to listen to me. I do not desire a Hereafter whereby I cannot arrive to you with forgiveness. I do not desire Your paradise in which I cannot see you."

The real life is the life of the Hereafter and the pious predecessors had these desires because they were truly alive.

I've been mentioning the virtues of dhikr for 50/60 years and its praise never ends. This is because the dhikr of Allah ta'ala is Allah's praise and Allah's praise never ends!

Learn the dhikr of your heart so that you can assign yourselves to Allah. Allah ta'ala plants the seed of love for dhikr, in the hearts of the people and these special flowers grow from all localities.

May Allah ta'ala allow us to implement these precious words of advice.
