How Should One be Grateful?

If we display gratitude, then due to its blessings, there is nothing which may prevent us from Paradise. And if we don't adopt it, then there's nothing stopping us from entering Hellfire.

If we bring this action of gratitude in our lives, then all the doors of paradise are opened for us and we attain Allah's love and nearness due to it.

قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ
"Little thanks do you give." 23:30

There are very few people who are grateful to Allah ta'ala. There are very few people who avoid using their tongue in the wrong way, their hands for immoral actions, and their feet for bad and sin. Such people are very few. The true gratitude is to save ourselves from the disobedience of Allah ta'ala.

There are 2 ways of displaying gratitude. Through the tongue and through the actions - verbally and practically. Until you implement both, you are not considered grateful to Allah ta'ala.

Gratefulness shouldn't only be shown towards worldly favours, but also towards the blessings related to our Hereafter. For example, the strength and ability to worship Allah ta'ala. Worldly things do not bring much benefit. However, if you pray 2 rakat prayer with sincerity, its value is such that you will attain paradise through it. To be grateful for prayer is to avoid immodest actions because prayer should prevent one from sinning. When you sin despite praying, it means you are ungrateful.

Allah ta'ala gave us the blessing of the Quran, so we should live according to it. This is displaying gratitude for the Quran. To go against the laws of the Quran is to become ungrateful to Allah ta'ala.

Allah ta'ala has not created anything useless and the greatest creation He has created is the creation of Mankind. Allah ta'ala took an oath 4 times to show the significance of Mankind to the entire universe. Despite this, we have lowered ourselves due to our inferiority complexes and we consider ourselves to be nothing.

He created our bodies. The organs within us hold a greater purpose and are valuable. We have great power within us, yet we fail to recognise our true value. Gratitude is due upon all our limbs for which we will be accountable for in the Hereafter.

True gratitude is to avoid the disobedience of Allah using the blessings which Allah ta'ala has given to us, such as the parts of our body. If a servant of Allah spends his life in this way, he will reach the highest stages in Jannah.

Be thankful to Allah through your eyesight by not gazing at things He will be displeased with. Be grateful for your tongue by using it to speak about what Allah ta'ala likes. If you disobey Him, you'll enter Hellfire, regardless of what other deeds you bring.

Similarly, possessing wealth and a car are all blessings and rewards from Allah. Wealth isn't considered a bad thing. Many of the Sahabah and the pious predecessors were wealthy. One should ask Allah ta'ala for wealth, but he should use it in the pleasure of Allah and not as a means of sin.

You are not the true provider of your own wealth. If it was truly you who earned it, then every man possesses the same energy, the same hands, the same body, but some earn more than others through no achievement of theirs. And this is the selection of Allah ta'ala. He gives to whoever He wills. He gives less to some and more to others and everyone is tested in different ways. Every person's condition is a test for him and the condition of a person either leads him to hellfire or paradise.

Perform Hajj and umrah, but show gratitude to Allah ta'ala for this opportunity. The true Umrah is that Umrah which prevents you from sins. This is gratitude to Allah. You must safeguard and preserve that Umrah and discard sins from your lives thereafter.

فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ

"So remember Me and I shall remember you; give thanks to Me and do not be ungrateful to Me for My favours." [2:152]

Those who were grateful to Allah in adversity and prosperity will be admitted into Paradise which shows that dhikr and gratitude are connected. If you want to be a grateful person, you must learn dhikr first. When your heart becomes grateful then your whole body becomes grateful to Allah ta'ala.

We are grateful to Allah over the blessings we desire, but when Allah ta'ala grants us according to His desire and preference, then we complain. Rather, we should be grateful with Allah ta'ala's selection because it is more beneficial for us.

We should be grateful to Allah in all conditions, whether our house burns down or our roof collapses or our child dies. When we question our fate, it results in imitating shaytan and being ungrateful to Allah ta'ala. When we complain we are challenging Allah ta'ala. In reality, no one can question Allah ta'ala nor understand His infinite wisdom.

To weep upon adversity, isn't considered a bad thing. Rather, one should strive to be content upon the decision of Allah and submit his heart to Allah's desire. If you're distressed but grateful, then Allah ta'ala will reward you and compensate for your loss.

The method of being grateful in adversity, is to look towards the other blessings which Allah ta'ala has granted you. If He has taken something from you, consider the other blessings you have and this will offer you peace, ease and patience through your hardship. Look for the other luxuries and comforts which Allah ta'ala has granted you.
For example, if one of your legs were injured, be thankful to Allah for your other leg which He saved, for at least you still have the ability to sit.

There is definitely a reason and wisdom behind everything which Allah ta'ala ordains. It is our duty to pass the test through all the highs and lows He puts us through and perform the actions which earn His pleasure.

Remain positive because this means we have recognised our blessings and are truly grateful to Allah for which He will admit us to paradise.

Make a habit to say "Alhamdulillah" during prosperity and "Alhamdulillah alaa kulli haal", during adversity, no matter how tough the difficulty is. Through this method, Allah ta'ala lifts the calamity.

When you ask someone how they are, ask with the intention that you want to hear them say 'Alhamdulillah.' In this way, you'll both be considered grateful servants and will earn paradise.

May Allah ta'ala grant us the ability to implement.
