How Should We Celebrate Jumu'ah?

Allah ta'ala loves the believing slave abundantly to the extent that even if he possesses simply an atoms worth of faith in his heart, he is considered valuable. Allah ta'ala never desires for any believer to enter Hellfire regardless of the level of his Imaan. Rather, He desires to admit every believer into Paradise.

Sins are what cause a person to enter hellfire and nafs and shaytan attempt to deviate a person and waste his good deeds. Allah ta'ala's Mercy is so vast that He wishes us to be forgiven and purified before we die so that we can be safe from Hellfire. Therefore, He has created countless means and resources for this, for example through certain deeds, through certain moments and days, through the company of certain human beings, one may attain salvation. These pious people are a reflection of Allah ta'ala's Mercy because through them a person attains forgiveness.

Jumuah is the leader of all days and a very great day. You don't have to wait a year to reach it. You don't have to go to Arafah or wait for Ramadan to receive this day. Allah ta'ala has placed this day once a week. The sun rises upon every day but the quality of Friday has been made special for the believers. We should prepare ourselves for this day and take benefit from this day.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven." [Bukhari]

We should prepare for this day in the correct way and take complete benefit as Allah ta'ala looks for excuses to forgive His servants. We should also remain wary that the attack of nafs and shaytan is severe upon this day. Married couples should avoid disputes and arguments with each other and change their mannerism on this day.

Allah ta'ala has made the worship of Jumuah very special and the rewards are unique and immense. There are 2 extra rakat nafil and a khutbah as well as the recitation of Surah Kahf observed on this day.

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever recites Surat al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between this Friday and the next.” [Sunan al Kubrã]

You will not receive this great virtue on any other day of the week no matter how many times you recite it. The pious predecessors say that this light protects a person from every trouble, calamity and illness. It protects him from nafs and shaytan and through it, he attains salvation from the Hellfire.

These virtues have been selected exclusively for Friday and these extra worships are to increase us in blessings and serve as an opportunity for us to be forgiven. We should never abandon the khutbah of Jumuah because there are abundant blessings inside it. The pious predecessors say that a persons supplications become accepted during the moments of the khutbah. Women should follow suit on this day. They should purify themselves and apply perfume and then sit on the prayer mat.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reports that Nabi ﷺ said, "Whomsoever recites Surah Dukhan at night, seventy thousand angels will seek forgiveness on his behalf." [Tirmidhi]

Allah ta'ala allows us to prepare for this day from the night which precedes it and It is through the great Mercy of Allah ta'ala that a person who is immersed in sin, becomes forgiven through these angels. So we are very blessed to be given the ability to remember Allah upon this very auspicious night of the week.

There is an hour on this day in which supplications are definitely accepted. However, that hour has been concealed from us in order for us to be constantly occupied in worshipping and seeking from Allah and so that we do not waste this day.

فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَانتَشِرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَابْتَغُوا مِن فَضْلِ اللَّهِ

"Once the prayer is over, disperse throughout the land and seek the bounty of Allah." [62:10]

Here Allah ta'ala commands us that after Jumuah, we should spread out and go back to tending to our work and our duties. Moreover, it is not within the Islamic teachings for one to remain confined to the masjid. Piety is not defined by sitting in the masjid remembering Allah all day. Rather, you must take care of your dependants and the affairs of the world.

وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

"And remember Allah often so you may be successful." [62:10]

We may seek the Mercy of Allah ta'ala whilst tending to our worldly affairs via engaging in the dhikr of Allah simultaneously. This is only possible by doing the dhikr of the heart because the dhikr performed with a tasbih is limited and restricts a person from working. Hence, the pious predecessors emphasise on learning the dhikr of the heart. This is the prescription of earning the deen and dunya at the simultaneously. We must seek this dhikr from a Sheikh so that our hearts are alive and constantly in the state of dhikr.

تُفْلِحُونَ
The commentators of the Quran say that the word 'success' here, holds a very deep definition which shows that the blessings are limitless. When one goes out to seek Allah and remember Him, He will receive blessings in all areas of his life.

Just like the apple is the food for the physical body, Dhikr is the food for the soul. There's so much blessings in the name of Allah that you don't need to see or feel. When you take His name, then undoubtedly it is taking effect and it is enlightening you. Therefore, avoid the whispers of Shaytan because the most foolish thing you can do is give in to doubts and the negative influences of Shaytan. If you remain firm upon dhikr despite facing challenges, then you'll receive all the blessings and the benefits and your good deeds will become accepted.

In summary, there are 3 timings stipulated for Allah ta'alas dhikr which we should take hold of. 1) Morning, after Fajr. 2) In the evening 3) After Jumuah time. Women and men should make a habit, to engage in dhikr after Jumuah. Just like we make sacrifices for our businesses, we should make sacrifices for our Hereafter in order to earn Paradise.

May Allah ta’ala grant us the ability to implement.
