What is the Big Sin?

The biggest sin a person commits through which Allah ta'ala's displeasure is incurred, is the sin of displaying ungratefulness to Allah. Due to this, a person becomes deprived of Allah ta'ala's favours.

Nowadays one doesn't even consider this action to be a sin as Shaytan has hidden it from our eyes. It is such a great sin, due to which, Iblis was given a punishment despite him being a great individual. He was the leader of the angels and was someone close to Allah with many great qualities, yet it became the cause of his ruin.
Shaytan was unhappy and ungrateful towards the blessings Allah ta'ala bestowed upon him and he disobeyed Allah ta'ala, so Allah ta'ala made him accursed and expelled him forever. He was given such a severe punishment that he bears the sin of every person who commits a sin in this world.

Thus, Allah ta'ala has made the sin of ungratefulness apparent inside the Quran so we can learn a lesson from it and avoid this particular sin.

It is due to this sin, all the blessings of the deen and the dunya are removed.

The blessings which we are surrounded with, remind us of Allah. In reality, we cannot enumerate the blessings of Allah ta'ala upon us nor can we repay a single favour, yet we are ungrateful. Every blessing of ours holds much significance, from our thumb to our nails and without them we feel loss and difficulty. We stand, sit and eat but we don't consider these to be blessings.

The greatest blessing that Allah ta'ala has bestowed upon us is in fact, greater than the blessings of our limbs and organs. It is a great favour which we don't even consider. That is the blessing of understanding and practicing the deen and the ability to worship Allah ta'ala and obey Him.
There is no greater gift than being given the ability to practice the Sunnah and attend the masjid. A person who implements one Sunnah action, receives the reward of a hundred martyrs! So imagine the reward of the person who always observes the Sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ.

On the other hand, if we are ungrateful upon the greatest favours of Allah ta'ala upon us, imagine how much of a sin this is.

How do we physically display gratitude towards these favours? By engaging in Allah ta'ala's remembrance.

As time passes the dhaakireen are reducing in quantity. People don't even know about dhikr.

فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُواْ لِى وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ

Therefore remember Me, I will remember you, and be thankful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me. [Quran, 2:152]

Those who engage in dhikr, will have the highest stages in paradise. Even before reaching paradise, their ranks will be publicly displayed, they will be sat on enlightened thrones and their faces will be lit like a moon. The onlookers will be amazed at their achievements.

On the other hand, the one who doesn't do dhikr is ungrateful towards Allah and is deprived from light and blessings in his life.

قَلِيلًا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ

.."Little do you thank Him." [67:23]

The word قليل was used to show that very few of Allah ta'ala's servants show gratitude to Him. Very few people will attain the ranks of the شاكرين & the ذاكرين in Hereafter. Very few people engage in the dhikr of Allah. Thus, we should strive to become part of these very few people.

وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلا

"And glorify Him morning and evening." [33:42]

Engage in abundant dhikr. When a servant of Allah rises in the morning and does dhikr, Allah ta'ala becomes pleased as this person has displayed gratitude for all the blessings Allah ta'ala granted him during the night. And when a servant does dhikr in the night, he displays gratitude for all Allah' ta'ala's favours upon him during the day, such as the worship he was given the ability to do. This is the method of displaying gratitude.

The more grateful you are, the higher promotion you will receive and the more you will be given. So if you become regular with showing gratitude and steadfast upon dhikr, then Allah ta'ala will increase you in light and shower His mercy upon you. He will enable you to remain attached and steadfast to your worship and good deeds.

If you pray Salaah and then engage in dhikr afterwards, it will draw you closer to Allah and bring you benefit.

Upon the completion of any form of worship, make a habit to sit and remember Allah in your heart for 3 minutes or 30 seconds. By practicing this, you elevate yourself to a high level and will be granted the effects and benefits of your worship. Allah ta'ala loves the dhikr of the heart [Muraqabah] and it causes one to become a Dhaãkir always. Thanking Allah from the heart is much better than gratitude expressed by the tongue. This is the method to show gratitude to Allah for the ability to worship Him.

Having the ability to pray Salah and enter the masjid is a great deal, for our footsteps could've lead us to places of evil or wrongdoing, but Allah ta'ala guided our footsteps to enter the masjid and other good places of benefit. Likewise, when Allah grants you the ability to practice the deen it is not by your own strength, but through His Mercy and Will.

May Allah ta'ala make us from amongst the true ذاكرين and شاكرين.
