​How Does Dhikr Help?

​Alhamdulillah, in these very precious moments of Ramadhan, especially in the last Ashrah, the final third that we are sitting in, there is Barakah in every moment and in every second, and the rewards increase. And in this great, momentous time, Allah ta’ala has given us the Tawfeeq to do His Dhikr and remember Him.

​Here is an example - the king of his time. He is the ruler, and obviously, as ruler, he has absolute power and full strength; and that king has a minister who is very close to him - he has a strong connection with him; he is a close relative, let’s say. So the minister is close to the king, and regularly solves the king’s issues and problems and executes his demands. So then if a friend of the minister told the him that he wanted his son to get a job, the minister would introduce the young man very nicely to the king. He would solve his friend’s problems and offer him solutions as well, and hence the friend would have no worries. He would always think ‘I know the minister, so any issues that I have will be taken care of – I have nothing to worry about.’

No’man bin Bashir radhiAllahu anh has related a Hadith where Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam states ‘Would any of you like to have someone close to you who can make representations for you to the real King, someone who is very close to the real King and who always presents the best of you to Him?’ In other words, this would be someone who can intercede for you, not with a worldly king but with the King of kings, and say good things about you to the King and assist you. If you had such a person, could there be anything better than that? No Muslim could reject that opportunity. This Hadith is recorded in Ahmad. Rather, I would say that this is Allah’s mercy and favour and is from the Barakah of Ramadhan that such a great Hadith has come to us today. Alhamdulillah, a Mu’min should be extremely happy to learn about this today, and he should think ‘I have learned about a way to deal with my problems and sicknesses.’ A person is always looking for places to turn to, for references in the world, and in the terms of this world, to have a direct line to the king would be very useful. So what about the King of kings? SubhanAllah – imagine what He can give to us. Never mind the Dunya – He can give you the whole of the Hereafter. He can save you at the time of death, He can save you in the grave – He can save you at any time. The angels of Rizq will always come to your home, and the angels will say Ameen even before you finish your Dua.

So Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam is giving his Ummah a great piece of encouragement and preparation with this news. But we don’t understand this point, and Nafs has surrounded us, so we don’t desire this. So brothers, will you do Amal on this point that has reached you today? Say InshaAllah – this is a great statement and a great piece of news. Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam asked ‘Do you want a representative who is close to Allah who can present your needs and who mentions you and promotes you when you are down or upset and distressed, who intercedes for you when you have an issue or have a need for something without you needing to do anything? He will provide a reference for you.’ Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam stated ‘Yadhkuruna jalala Rabbihi’, meaning that when you do the Dhikr of Allah and remember Allah’s greatness, then SubhanAllah, your Dhikr will take on a unique image of Noor. I am just giving you a bit of explanation here. Your Dhikr will take the form of Noor, of light – whichever Dhikr you do, that Dhikr which has come out of your mouth, SubhanAllah, and you won’t even know what you said about Allah. Alhamdulillah, we will recite great Kalimaats here with the Fadhl of Allah, which will be protection for us in this world and the Hereafter, alhamdulillah.

These are such blessed gatherings, and when we speak about Islam and when some opportunity for improvement comes from the talk, then we should feel as if Allah subhana wa ta'ala is pulling us away from the brink of hellfire by means of the words and lessons coming from the person who is speaking. Shaytan doesn’t want this to happen, which means this is good. Allah ta’ala is giving encouragement through the words of the person who is speaking, so that if someone happens to come to the gathering and sit down – and Allah knows who comes and what desires he comes with and what the condition of his heart is – then Allah says ‘When he arrives at My beloved gathering, let me deliver such words to this person that will penetrate his heart and save him from hellfire.’ This is the Majlis of Allah ta’ala, and we shouldn’t waste it. We should never waste these gatherings – Allah ta’ala sees everything and hears everyone; He is aware of every single matter that relates to us. However simple we are, however deviated, naughty and off the track we are, we are still Allah’s servants, and we are members of the Ummah of His Habeeb sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Remember this and never give up or lose hope. As long as you have breath in your body, even if you are one hundred years old, for as long as you can move and eat and pick up a Tasbeeh, know that Allah’s grace and favour is with you and always try to save yourself from Jahannam. It doesn’t matter if you are sinful. Don’t think ‘Oh, it doesn’t matter to me. I might as well leave it and give up now. Why should I do A’maal now? I’m about to die.’ No – don’t lose hope in Allah. Never lose hope until the last second before death.

Until you see the angels of death, there is still time for you to say ‘Oh Allah, forgive me!’ Allah ta’ala says that even at that stage, this Dua will bring about Allah’s forgiveness and all the previous sins will be forgiven. Such a person doesn’t even do any Ibadah as he lies on his deathbed. He didn’t do anything special, but alhamdulillah, his Iman enables him to say ‘Oh Allah, forgive Me for whatever I have done.’ But a person gets habituated to forgetfulness and therefore forgets at that time. There is a very nice method to get used to this – Allah ta’ala gives you another method and opportunity every day, a practice you can adopt. What is this? How does Allah allow us to practice for death, for being placed in a grave? We have to do this every day. What is that? When our eyes start to close and we are tired, we suddenly leave everything and run to our mattress – we do this, don’t we? We all run straight to our beds, and a person then lies down and pulls a blanket or a quilt over him – this is just like a grave, just like when the soil is placed upon the grave. So he covers himself and then the lights are turned off – and this is like the darkness of the grave. Say SubhanAllah.

So you are practicing going into this grave-like environment every day. At that time, your wife, home, children, business – everything has gone; it is all estranged from you at the time the lights are switched off. A person doesn’t know where he is going, and as he lies there while he is still awake, his heart feels that it wants to die! Say SubhanAllah. Look at this – in practice, he says ‘I want to die’ every day. ‘Take my Ruh out now and let me sleep,’ he demands from Allah. If he doesn’t feel sleepy, he complains to Allah, saying ‘I don’t feel sleepy – I want to sleep.’ Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam has explained that when sleep overtakes a person, that is a type of death for the human being. It is practice for death - Allah ta’ala is making you practice going into your grave every day. And then that person calls for death, saying ‘Oh Allah, knock me out! Finish me off!’ SubhanAllah. He gets close to death at that point when he lies down with his eyes closed and everyone has left him. That is exactly the condition of the human being at death. His hands are by his side, he is lying down, he has no food or drink, and he has no consciousness at all. Then, after a while, he starts snoring, and then, if scorpions and ants and spiders come, he is not aware. A thief can come and steal his belongings as he lies there, because his Ruh has left his body and gone to Allah.

This is death, Mawt. This can be a very brilliant daily practice if we make a habit of one thing at that time and do one action. This has come into my mind right now, so I am sharing it with you. This is how messages come to human beings. No one knows how much time they have left, not me and not you – Allah knows. Nowadays, death happens just like that. People are laughing and joking, and suddenly they die. Who knows if we will meet again after today? Will we reach another Salah? We do our A’maal, but such a condition has come to us today in this day and age. We are Muslims and we have Yaqeen on this, but our Iman was weak and so Allah ta’ala wanted to strengthen our Yaqeen so that we would realise that we have no guarantees. You don’t even get a chance to shake their hands, and they’ve gone – they’ve died. Without you getting a chance to see him, he dies, whether father, son, mother. The sickness is delivered from the son to the mother, or from the father to the son – our own flesh and blood are conveying this sickness to each other; and then death comes. Allahu Akbar. Understand the power of Allah, brothers – understand the power of Allah.

We are so far from Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Look at the situation we have around us today. Our blood relatives are inviting death into the household. Allah says ‘I am giving you such a sickness that it spreads from mother to son.’ The son has to run from the mother and father – and we should run. We should maintain our distance, because Allah ta’ala says that this is the protection He has given to us so that we realise. Allah is saying ‘Just as you ran away from Me, today I will make you run away from each other, from your fellow man on earth. You ran away from My Salah, you ran away from My Masjids – for who? For yourself, for your son, for your daughter, for your wealth. You gave bad advice, you told your son the wrong things, saying ‘Moulana Sahib is like his and he is backward.’ Your heart considered that they were bad people and you used to hate them and the words of the Deen. Their words used to pinch your hearts and you didn’t like them.’ SubhanAllah.

So Allah ta’ala says ‘You didn’t like those words which called you towards Me, that called you to come close to Me, and you had enmity for them, so now I will force you to run from those words. If you don’t run from them, you will get sick. I will put sickness into someone, and he will come close to you unless you run away – otherwise he will send you into the realm of death.’ The doctor will say to you ‘How dare you – don’t go near your relatives.’ Your own mother or father can be dying, but the Hukm of the doctors will be ‘Don’t go to their Janazah and don’t touch them.’ If this is not punishment, what is it? Tell me. SubhanAllah – look at the power of Allah ta’ala.

But Allah ta’ala gives us this chance that right up until the time of death, even in the last second, if a human being does one word of Astaghfar, Allah says ‘I will forgive all your sins!’ So Allah is making us practice this every day – say SubhanAllah. What is the practice? When you go to your bed and are about to sleep and are close to death, rehearse at least once and get ready for the real death that is to come. At the time of sleeping, when you go to your mattress, do Tawbah to Allah and say ‘Ya Allah, Astaghfirullah!’ Say Astaghfirullah three times when you become drowsy, even if you don’t have Wudhu. You don’t even need to make Wudhu when you are going to sleep – no need for purity or any formal structure, but when you recite ‘Astaghfirullah,’ all the sins of that day will be forgiven. And if you practice this throughout your life, when you are dying, when the genuine need comes in that state, the same practice will come out that you used to make when going to bed. You will be in the same condition and will be struggling, but you are used to asking Allah for forgiveness every night before you sleep – SubhanAllah. What did you used to do? Ask Allah for forgiveness, so at that time you will say ‘Ya Allah! I am coming to You now – Mawt is coming.’ No one is next to you at that time – everything has gone – so Allah made him used to this practice so that he could do it himself.

Where did this practice originate? Aha – the Imam ul-Ambiya sallallahu alayhi wasallam, most honest of all men, told his Ummah ‘When you go to sleep every day, recite Astaghfirullah.’ And what reasoning did Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam give for this? He said ‘All the sins of your day will be forgiven, and at the time of death you will be used to this, so when you are dying, your mouth will automatically say ‘Oh Allah, forgive me – I am about to die.’ And Allah will be so Karim; He will say ‘Are you calling Me? Is My servant calling me on his deathbed, that person who was a waster and a sinner, who left Salah and did dirty actions, who didn’t go near the Qur’an? Get back angels – who are you to say anything to him? My servant has called Me, and My love requires Me to answer My servant straightaway when he calls Me.’

Are we waiting for Laylat-ul-Qadr and the speeches on the big nights? Allah is waiting for His servant every second; Allah is waiting for His servant at every moment. He doesn’t say ‘Come to the Masjid and sit in the Masjid on Laylat-ul-Qadr or another big night’ – no, no, no. Allah says ‘I am waiting for My servant every second, waiting for him to understand and turn to Me, for him to do Tawbah and to repent.’ SubhanAllah. I heard just one verse of the Qur’an and I enjoyed it so much that I thought I would share it. A child was reading, and I thought ‘Allah’s Rahmah is such that through one sentence of the Qur’an, Allah makes the life of a human being. There is just one word of instruction in this verse – ‘Do Tawbah to Me!’ Make Astaghfar – Allah says this so easily in the Qur’an.

{ثُمَّ تَابُوا مِن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوا} Do Tawbah and then start doing good deeds. If you didn’t pray Salah, then start trying to pray Salah; if you used to sin, then at least make an effort to leave those sins. Try – Allah likes effort. Allah says {أَصْلَحُوا} – try to correct yourselves. Allah doesn’t say that you have to be the biggest striver and do Mujahidah. Allah says ‘Do Tawbah, and then try.’ Try, and then Allah says {أَصْلَحُوا إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِن بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ} – Try! This is just one sentence of the Qur’an, one verse. Allah says ‘It doesn’t matter how sinful you are – come to Me and do Tawbah. You do not need any reference or signature or stamp of approval or permission from a judge – it is just Me and you. I am watching you, so ask from Me. And when you ask, then I will answer immediately!’

Allah is speaking about the world now, where people are making this Dua and that Dua and asking. Allah says ‘The call that I listen to most immediately and directly is Tawbah. That is the reference you need.’ You can beg from the whole world – everyone is trying, seeking, pleading – but someone sitting in a corner who is upset because he has no hope and is surrounded by sin, when he is close to death, if he comes and whispers ‘Oh Allah, forgive me, forgive me,’ then Allah says ‘I hear no one else at that time! First and foremost, I hear his call – I will decide his fate first!’ SubhanAllah. Look at what this tells us about our relationship with Allah. Thinking about myself, I have not asked for forgiveness even once in the day – not even once have I said ‘Ya Allah, forgive me – I have made big mistakes and committed crimes, and I don’t know how it happened.’ SubhanAllah.

Develop this beautiful habit of Tawbah - you cannot imagine the heights you can attain from this great Ibadah. It is a greater Ibadah than a man can imagine. Allah says ‘The person who regrets like this becomes so close to Me, even though before that, Paradise was closed to him.’ Even if you have sins that fill up the gap between the heavens and the earth, Allah will send you away from Hell and hide them all just from that one statement. You can bring Allah ta’ala onto your side even if you are seventy or eighty years old and have made Allah unhappy and have committed sins and been disobedient, even if you used to eat whatever you liked and disobey Allah all day long, openly and flagrantly, challenging Allah and sitting with people who had no Iman, as if Allah would be happy with your actions. You would commit these acts of disobedience in their countries – look at the extent of the disobedience! We disobey Allah so much.

But Allah ta’ala says ‘If you ask for forgiveness just once, then in the Hereafter you will see the result in My Karam and My Rahmah and My decision.’ A person will realise that just reciting these words once in the world could have saved him from the fire of Jahannam - so should we do this, my brothers? Make a habit of Astaghfar, and especially when? When is the greatest time? When you go to bed to sleep. Don’t think about money or what will happen at your shop or business the next day. First and foremost, when you go to your mattress and lie down, say ‘Oh Allah – forgive me!’ Say it in any language – Gujerati, Farsi, English. Our tongues speak an international language and Allah ta’ala immediately understands Istighfar. Make the children get used to this as well. My Beloved Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam, who loved the people of the world, and through following whom we get everything, and through whom the whole world will be forgiven, said that Allah loves this so much, and therefore in every gathering and every day he would repeat Astaghfirullah one hundred times over. Say SubhanAllah. Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam did this to teach us the importance of this. And me and you – what are we? Nothing! So should we do this or not? Tell me.

Let us come back to this beautiful Hadith, this great gift that Allah ta’ala has given us today. In it, Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said ‘Would you like to have a reference through which you can succeed, and goodness will come to you?’ What could be greater than that? Then he said ‘Alladhina yadhkuruna-llah!’ My brothers, when you do start doing Dhikr of Allah, in whatever words or language, it takes on a Noorani form; that Dhikr detaches itself from you, and yet it stays with you. It does not become disconnected from you, but it immediately goes to Rabb-il-Alameen in the form of Noor, and Allah loves that Dhikr and draws it close to Him. When you recite ‘SubhanAllah, Wal-hamdulillah, wa La ilaha illa-llahu, Wa-llahu Akbar’ these words go to Allah as Noor. When that Dhikr arrives, it starts flying around the Arsh of Allah. This is what the Hadith says – SubhanAllah. How easy this is, SubhanAllah! This happens, but you don’t even know that it is happening - and all because you said ‘SubhanAllah’ once. You started sitting in a gathering of Dhikrullah with a Wali of Allah and kept on saying ‘SubhanAllah’ again and again, and so you became used to it. Does the human being have any other Ibadah that can do this? No, but when you say ‘Allahu Akbar’ and sit next to a Wali of Allah and attend his gatherings, then you make a habit of this and say ‘SubhanAllah’ immediately.

What great Kalimaat you are saying day and night – and where are they going? Listen to this Hadith. I am speaking to you about the gracious Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, the Sadiq al-Masduq – if you don’t believe what I am saying, then ask the respected scholars. This is a Hadith in Ahmad and it is present in Fazaa’il-e-A’maal - Hadhrat Sheikh-ul-Hadith rahmatullah alayh has narrated this. Me and you read Fazaa’il-e-A’maal, but we read it and that’s it. We listen to it and hear it, but our ears remain numb to it. Fazaa’il-e-A’maal is such a beautiful Kitab, and Hadhrat Sheikh included these points. I tell you the truth now – this Kitab Fazaa’il-e-A’maal was the means for my guidance. I didn’t know about this Kitab, and when I went to Makkah - and I was a normal person like everybody else - a friend, a distant relative that I met, said casually ‘Let me give you a book - you should read it.’ I said to him ‘I don’t read Kitabs – I have many other books that I read, like Shakespeare and poetry.’ I had learned all these things in the English-speaking environment – I was like an animal. But he said ‘Read this book’, so when I got the Tawfeeq from Allah to do Umrah – and Allah ta’ala calls Jahil people to places like this so that they can understand – I was given that Kitab. And I have kept that Kitab until today – I embrace that Kitab to my chest, that same copy that I was given.

So at that time, I said ‘What is this Kitab?’ He told me to take it and to start reading a few words, so I went to my room and read. After opening it and reading two or three pages, I sat up – Allah creates the means! I didn’t finish the Kitab at that time, because alhamdulillah, soon afterwards Allah ta’ala gave me such a friend who taught me the Tafsir of the Kitab – SubhanAllah! That was even more of a shortcut, and I didn’t have the Tawfeeq to finish reading the whole Kitab because I took the hand of the Wali of Allah and preferred the book that he wrote! Allah ta’ala was saying ‘Okay, if you don’t have the time to read it, then let Me introduce you to My friend, and he will give you the Tafsir of this Kitab.’ SubhanAllah. Allah says ‘In less time than it would take to read it, he will imprint the Tafsir onto your heart – none of its meaning will be left out.’ SubhanAllah. The hearts of the Walis of Allah are such that when you sit next to them, there is an injection of current that flows into your heart. Who doesn’t believe in electricity? Where is the electricity? Tell me. The wires are hidden, but I can see the effects of the electricity. We have Yaqeen on this, that the lights are powered by electricity, so don’t we have belief in Allah’s words when He says ‘My friends hearts are like this – they are burning with My Dhikr, so when you sit next to them, their heat and their electricity will reach you as well’?

But who wants to sit next to them? Who has the time? We don’t like these words, do we? We get angry when they speak. You should sit next to them – will you sit, brothers? Yes – you should sit. Just sit to have a chit-chat; just sit for a discussion. If you sit with them and talk generally, you won’t leave empty-handed – Ishq and love will come into you. It is stated in Hadith that you will never lose out when you sit next to the friends of Allah, and you will not leave empty-handed, even if you go to ask for money or to drink tea. Don’t go for friendship – go for some worldly reason and then the love will come into you. Allah says ‘I, your Rabb, am guaranteeing you that he is such a human being that I have made his chest and heart unique. Whatever I put into his heart will come into your heart as well – the current will reach you!’ Say SubhanAllah.

So Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said ‘The words of Dhikr that you recite will intercede for you; they rotate around constantly around the Arsh, and an announcement comes from them’ - say SubhanAllah – ‘and that announcement is there and it hums and hums. Those words rotate around the Arsh until Qiyamah, presenting themselves to Allah and saying ‘Ya Allah, he remembered You, he praised You, he called on You, he elevated Your Name, and he is upset.’ Allah ta’ala says ‘Do you think I don’t hear him? I have forgiven him even in advance!’ SubhanAllah. ‘Before he evens asks, I bestow him with what he needs.’ The Duas that we make are not always fulfilled, but Allah says ‘I know he is asking for a son, and I am not rejecting the Dua when I don’t give it to him - but it is not appropriate for him right now. It is not right for him to have a son now.’ You may be happy at first, but what if he rejects faith when he gets older?’ These are the stories that surround us in the world and also events in the Qur’an.

Allah says ‘I know what is best for. Keep make Dua, and whatever you get, embrace it.’ SubhanAllah. Allah ta’ala doesn’t reject. If you ask a human being, does he reject you if you ask him for something? It is certainly not the glory of Allah that He rejects your Duas. Never. If you ask someone for five pounds, you may get five – generous people are there, and even if they don’t like you coming to their door, they will still give you if you ask. So if you ask from Allah, is there anyone more generous than Him? No one! If there are people you can go to in the world who always give, people who give to this Masjid and that charity, then ask Allah, my brothers! Without any delay, the response will come to you – money will come without any limits. Yes? Raise your hands up high and Allah says that He will not leave you empty-handed, SubhanAllah.

So my brothers, do Dhikr – we should do Dhikr. Such assistance and such help has come in Ramadhan through this news that we are getting. When we do Dhikr and recite the Kalimaat in the little bit of time that we have got, alhamdulillah, those Kalimaat will travel for you and become your references, and they will be so strong that until Qiyamah, their Noor will be separate and unique and enhanced by the Noor of Ramadhan in which you are reciting them. The Dhikr that we did before Ramadhan will step back and say ‘Step back – here is a unique, Ajeeb Noor; the light from these Kalimaat are overwhelming us – they are stronger than us!’ That Noor will bring them very close to Allah. They will make a fuss about the Noor of the Dhikr done in Ramadhan, which will be higher; that Dhikr done in a Halaqah in the Masjid during Ramadhan will have pride of place and will make a claim on your behalf. Allah will say ‘Come – intercede. Refer, refer.’ And this will not just last for an hour – as long as you are alive, those Kalimaat will rotate around the Arsh and will intercede for you.

So should we do Dhikr or not, my brothers? Tell me. Do you like my words? Will we do Dhikr? InshaAllah – and we will make Dua as well, saying ‘Oh Allah, save us from this sickness and allow these Majalis of Dhikr to keep taking place.’ Why? Because they are a protection for us. I swear by Allah, the Majalis of Dhikr protect the whole world, right now! If anything can protect the world at this moment in time, if anything can save us, it is not vaccines or medicines or worldly power that can save us. If anything can save us, it is the Dhikr of Allah. It is Dhikr of Allah. Ask the great Walis of Allah – ask the Muftis. Ask Mufti Taqi Sahib. When the disease started, the first thing that Allah ta’ala showed His Wali was that Dhikr is the protection from Corona. Do Dhikr! What is Corona saying? ‘You didn’t do Dhikr before, so do it now – do it!’ Allah is saying ‘Do it!’ SubhanAllah. Allah is saying ‘You used to run away from My remembrance, but now you have to do it.’ There is no vaccine other than this – what is the strongest vaccine that Allah ta’ala has given? HasbunAllahu wa Ni’ma-l-Wakeel; La Hawla wa la Quwwata illa bi-llah; SubhanAllah wal-Hamduli-llah, wa La ilaha illa-llahu wa-llahu Akbar – these are the strongest medicines. But we don’t want to do this and instead, we run to the vaccine and the jabs, which have reactions as well.

Will we do Dhikr? Is that a strong promise? Come – let’s do Dhikr. Recite Durood Sharif.
