Ramadhan Bayan Mon 19th April/7th Ramadhan

​I am grateful thousands and millions of times over that Allah ta’ala has given me the opportunity to come to this Masjid and to sit amongst you pious and righteous people. Allah ta’ala has given us the Tawfeeq to sit for a little while to do His Dhikr in this Masjid, and this is a great treasure and gift from Allah. When something is taken out of a person’s hand, it is then he realizes what he has lost. How many years has it been that we have been devoid of these opportunities to sit together for the Dhikr of Allah? This is all from Allah ta’ala’s Hikmah, for everything is based on Allah ta’ala’s wisdom, and we are grateful that Allah ta’ala has accepted our Duas; and may Allah ta’ala forgive our mistakes and accept our Tawbah, and may Allah ta’ala take us far from difficulties and issues.

​A person may face many issues and difficulties, but Allah ta’ala’s Grace and Mercy is the greatest thing. The biggest mistake we make, for which we should do Tawbah and about which we receive warnings and admonishments of Allah’s displeasure, is that we are ungrateful. Allah ta’ala gives Ni’mahs to a human being, and Allah ta’ala has given us the great Ni’mah of a Masjid and has given us the Tawfeeq to come to His home, and He gives us warm water and the Tawfeeq to sit down. But we reject the Ni’mahs of Allah, and eventually Allah ta’ala gives His servants warnings about this. So first and foremost, we need to learn the lessons from these examples and should not be ungrateful servants of Allah – rather, we should be grateful servants of Allah.

​Allah ta’ala has given us a tremendous Ni’mah in these moments of Ramadhan, in these hours of Ramadhan – and this is a truly great Ni’mah. The greatest Ibadah of this month is to be grateful to Allah ta’ala, for it is such a great Ni’mah. Is this something small? What a great month Allah ta’ala has given to us, in which every moment there is forgiveness – in every second there is forgiveness. Does a person know how much life is left to him? There are so many beautiful and beloved brothers who are not in front of me today, and inside me, my heart is feeling grief for the loss of those brothers who are not with us anymore.

There was somebody who used to sit here in front of me and do Dhikr, and until his last moments, I met him in the Masjid. We used to meet each other in Dhikr, and I am hopeful that Allah ta’ala will include him amongst the Dhakireen in Jannah. He was such a person, and I say from my heart that I am grateful to Allah ta’ala for the fact that I kept on coming here, and though whatever effort I made was broken and lowly, despite that, Allah ta’ala definitely gave me a person who was attached to this Masjid, and his name was Noor Muhammad, and I feel that at least, oh Allah, he proved that I was grateful in doing Your Dhikr. He used to come running quickly to the Masjid, and I would ask him ‘How have you come here so quickly?’ He would reply ‘I have not been at home after work except to quickly change my clothes, and then I came straight here.’ I never saw him miss a Majlis, and he used to do Dhikr of Allah with great passion and desire. May Allah ta’ala make us such human beings who are also grateful.

​ There are no guarantees – life comes and it goes, and people come and they go, but we should be grateful to Allah in this way. And what a great Ibadah this is, and a person will realise when he departs what valuable moments these were and how many we wasted. There are others too, great respected people from the Ulema-e-Kiram, such as Hadhrat Mu’min Sahib – what a great personality he was. He used to come in Ramadhan to the Majlis that we held after Isha, and wherever he was, whether in Preston or any other place, he would come very quickly from there to the Majlis and say ‘Hadhrat, I have arrived.’ Even if he could only catch a few minutes, he would still come. What a big Alim, scholar and Mufti he was, but he recognized that if he didn’t go to the Majlis, he would incur a big loss, so he would come rushing from Preston, bringing others with him - and yet others who live in the same street as Zakariyyah Masjid where the Isha Majlis was held did not have the Tawfeeq to come. How did those people depart from the world? One person passes away as a Shaheed, another passes away on Jumu’ah, but Allah ta’ala values His servants when they make effort.

​So my brothers, this is a big lesson, and Allah ta’ala shows us these examples day and night. He was such a big Alim, so obviously there must have been a recognition of the benefit of Dhikr. He had read Mishkat and Bukhari and then he did Amal upon them as well – he practiced. So when I see such people, alhamdulillah, great people to whom Allah ta’ala gave the treasures of both Deen and Dunya, there is a big lesson when we see them at the Majlis. Can there be a bigger Ibadah than this?

There is a Hadith that you will have read regularly, where Ibn Musa radhiAllahu anh – this is a Hadith in Mishkat – narrates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam gave the example of the person who does the Dhikr of Allah and compared this to the example of the person who doesn’t do Dhikr of Allah. The comparison between the one who does Dhikrullah and the one who doesn’t do Dhikrullah that is given in this Hadith is stated to be like the difference between a person who is alive and a person who is dead. End of story! If we think about this, what a great Ibadah Dhikr of Allah must be. Dhikr is so great that it is also stated in Hadith that if a person sits on the earth and does Dhikr, the beings in the heavens look down upon him and see him like the moon and stars shining, and he brings seven layers of dead and barren land to life. And us? Look at us!

Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that the difference between the one who does Dhikr and the one who doesn’t do Dhikr is like comparing a person who is alive and a person who is dead – that is the difference. Those who do Dhikr of Allah are alive and those who don’t do Dhikr of Allah are dead – they are not alive. If Allah has said this - end of story! A person might say ‘Oh, I am eating and driving a car and running and sprinting’ - everyone can be watching him, and the whole of the Dunya is doing these things because everyone is in the same boat, but this is Allah’s definition. In the book of Allah, he is not alive – he has passed away. In these moments this is especially important, but it is not just about certain moments; rather, in every second of his life, a human being should be a Dhakir. And Allah ta’ala has prepared a means for this and has not said that we should just do Dhikr for an hour now and then. Allah has said here that anytime a person is not doing Dhikr, he is dead – that is how fantastic an Ibadah this is, and that is how much Allah ta’ala wants His servant to do His Dhikr.

The Mufassireen have commented on the meaning of this difference between the Dhakir and the non-Dhakir being like one who is alive and one who is dead; it is not about them being physically alive or dead, but rather that their hearts are alive or dead. The person who does Dhikr of Allah, his heart is alive, and the sign that his heart is alive is that his Salah will never be Qadha, SubhanAllah, and he will never lie or commit fraud, and he will never disobey, and he won’t do impure and dirty actions. And if by chance that person should do any such thing, then he would become regretful and remorseful and do Tawbah and Astaghfar. He is upset and distressed if he commits a sin.

So if we look at ourselves and see that this is our internal condition, then we are alive - if we have these emotions, then we are alive. That person will do Ibadah – he will do Tilawat of the Qur’an and make Sujood, and he will have the taste and enjoyment of doing these things. And if he hears wasteful, Dunyawi discussions, his heart will feel cold towards them – these are the signs of the heart that is alive. By contrast, a person whose heart inclines towards dirty and impure things, towards wasteful talk, chit-chat, gossip and pointless discussions, then his heart is dead. It doesn’t matter how much he is eating or how much water he is drinking – he is not alive in Allah’s Sight. We can analyze and scan ourselves in this regard.

So we need to do the Dhikr of Allah, and we need to do such Dhikr that is not just about a few Tasbeehs, but rather Allah wants us to do Dhikr at every moment. How do you do this at every moment and in every second? Allah has given us a machine within us, a generator – but we don’t understand the nature of this. We think about our kidney and our liver and our stomach, but Allah ta’ala has given us such an organ and such a machine that can never be Ghafil, negligent, lazy, asleep - and that is the heart! Allah has given us the heart. Come to me, and in a second, I will make your heart a Dhakir inshaAllah. Allah has prepared this – but who wants to do it? This is such a great point.

So we are talking about the difference between the sign of the one who is deceased and the one who is alive. When the heart is alive, it immediately accepts the Hadith and the Nasihah of Allah’s Nabi sallallahu alayhi wasallam, while for the dead heart, it will come in one side and go out the other. No matter if it is the recitation of Qur’an or the Imam Sahib or one of the noble scholars speaking, we listen to the words and they come in one ear and go straight out of the other ear. Those whose hearts are alive say ‘Oh – that is the benefit of this point, so why shouldn’t I do this Amal? I should do this action.’ I have read this Hadith in front of you, which is a great Hadith, a massive Hadith and a very weighty Hadith, so if our hearts are alive, we should say ‘Yes – I want to remember Allah in every second of the day!’

What is the easy way to do that? There is a very simple method: make your heart alive, and that’s it – then start the work, start doing Dhikr. Your heart will practice and will continue and continue. When you have a few moments, do Muraqabah for a little while – bow your head and your neck and you will feel that your heart is doing Dhikr of Allah. {ٱلَّذِينَ يَذۡكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ قِيَـٰمً۬ا وَقُعُودً۬ا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمۡ} Allah says that this is the definition: ‘When you are walking, sitting and lying down - remember Me in every posture.’ So should we not do this, my brothers? Yes. What a bad thing it is if we do not do Dhikr and if we reject it. So learn Dhikr, learn Qalbi Dhikr, the Dhikr of the heart, and don’t waste time. We should not waste time and should take the benefit of the treasures and the Ni’mahs that Allah ta’ala has placed in our bodies.

So now we will sit and do Dhikr for a few moments. These are very valuable moments – Allah ta’ala gives Thawab at this time. May Allah ta’ala make our Dunya better and our Akhirah better in this Ramadhan; and may Allah ta’ala give us the enjoyment of Dhikrullah in this Ramadhan - and may we do it as much as we can. We should be regular and habitual in His Dhikr.
