Main way of going wrong in tasawwuf is be-adabi. Adab = caution. Might do lots of dhikr, but not having an affect, for this reason. Should know your Sheikh's temperament. Especially in communication, verbally and in writing. Need to be fanaful-sheikh, his colour, good qualities, good deeds etc comes on you. If not, due to be-adabi.
So if dhikr not having any effect, ibadat not going well, think what be-adabi your doing and do taubah.
